Electroluminescence from pure resonant states in hBN-based vertical tunneling junctions

Defect centers in wide-band-gap crystals have garnered interest for their potential in applications among optoelectronic and sensor ***,defects embedded in highly insulating crystals,like diamond,silicon carbide,or aluminum oxide,have been notoriously difficult to excite electrically due to their large internal *** address this challenge,we realized a new paradigm of exciting defects in vertical tunneling junctions based on carbon centers in hexagonal boron nitride(hBN).The rational design of the devices via van der Waals technology enabled us to raise and control optical processes related to defect-to-band and intradefect *** fundamental understanding of the tunneling events was based on the transfer of the electronic wave function amplitude between resonant defect states in hBN to the metallic state in graphene,which leads to dramatic changes in the characteristics of electrons due to different band structures of constituent *** our devices,the decay of electrons via tunneling pathways competed with radiative recombination,resulting in an unprecedented degree of tuneability of carrier dynamics due to the significant sensitivity of the characteristic tunneling times on the thickness and structure of the *** enabled us to achieve a high-efficiency electrical excitation of intradefect transitions,exceeding by several orders of magnitude the efficiency of optical excitation in the sub-band-gap *** work represents a significant advancement towards a universal and scalable platform for electrically driven devices utilizing defect centers in wide-band-gap crystals with properties modulated via activation of different tunneling mechanisms at a level of device engineering.

Human bone allografts present a better alternative to autografts in terms of minimization of the harvesting procedure *** to the use in clinical applications,they require sterilization which aims to reduce *** often comes at the expense of their biological properties as carriers of *** this study,we evaluated the cytocompatibility of human bone allografts processed and sterilized by three different methods withmesenchymal stromal *** morphology,biological and biochemical properties of the extracted bone-conditionedmedium and viability of cells were *** found that chemical sterilization had a strong negative effect on cell viability,whereas thermal sterilization and washing with subsequentγ-irradiation both resulted in a bone graft compatible with the progenitor ***,washing of the bone prior to sterilization allowed solid removal of cell debris and other bone marrow *** together,our findings demonstrate the importance of a proper choice of the bone graft processing method for the production of the biomaterial suitable for tissue engineering.

Chemically induced local lattice distortions versus structural phase transformations in compositionally complex alloys

Recent experiments show that the chemical composition of body-centered cubic(bcc)refractory high entropy alloys(HEAs)can be tuned to enable transformation-induced plasticity(TRIP),which significantly improves the ductility of these *** calls for an accurate and efficient method to map the structural stability as a function of composition.A key challenge for atomistic simulations is to separate the structural transformation between the bcc and theωphases from the intrinsic local lattice distortions in such chemically disordered *** solve this issue,we develop a method that utilizes a symmetry analysis to detect differences in the crystal *** this method in combination with ab initio calculations,we demonstrate that local lattice distortions largely affect the phase stability of Ti–Zr–Hf–Ta and Ti–Zr–Nb–Hf–Ta *** relaxation effects are properly taken into account,the predicted compositions near the bcc–hcp energetic equilibrium are close to the experimental compositions,for which good strength and ductility due to the TRIP effect are observed.

The trade-off between COVID-19 and mental diseases burden during a lockdown: Mathematical modeling of control measures

Background:During the COVID-19 pandemic,many countries used lockdowns as a containment *** lockdowns successfully contributed to slowing down the contagion,the related mobility restrictions were reportedly associated with an increased risk of major depressive and anxiety *** aimed to quantify the trade-off between the quality-adjusted life years(QALY)gain due to lower COVID-19 incidence as a result of a lockdown and QALY loss due to lockdown-induced mental ***:We developed an agent-based model of COVID-19 epidemic and coupled mental disorder development in the population of a large *** used data sources on the places of living,studying and working,public health and census *** of mental disorders was based on diathesis-stress *** quantified mental and physical health burden in terms of QALY taking into account major depressive and anxiety disorder episodes,lethal and non-lethal cases of COVID-19,and ***:We evaluated the dynamics of new major depressive disorder(MDD)and anxiety disorder(AD)cases during the period between September 2020 and December 2021 in Moscow,*** found that lockdown imposition increases the daily chances of getting MDD or ADD by a vulnerable person by 16.79%(95%CI[12.36%,21.23%]).The QALY loss associated with COVID-19-induced and lockdown-induced mental disorders was estimated to be 18.93%(95%CI[16.94%,19.73%])of the total QALY loss caused by COVID-19,immunization,and all kinds of mental *** a synthetic“strong”lockdown,it had been shown that QALY loss is minimized when about 70%of the population are ***:The burden associated with mental disorders amounts to a considerable part of COVID-19-related *** findings demonstrate that cost-benefit analysis of mobility restriction should include a forecast of mental disorder development in the population.

Ammonia and phosphorus removal from using cash crop waste-derived agricultural runoff biochars

Adsorption of biochars(BC)produced from cash crop residuals is an economical and practical technology for removing nutrients from agricultural *** this study,B C made of orange tree trunks and tea tree twigs from the Laoguanhe Basin were produced and modified by aluminum chloride(Al-modified)and ferric sulfate solutions(Fe-modified)under various pyrolysis temperatures(200℃-600℃)and residence times(2-5 h).All produced and modified B C were further analyzed for their abilities to adsorb ammonia and phosphorus with initial concentrations of 10-40 mg/L and 4-12 mg/L,***-modified Tea Tree B C 2h/400℃showed the highest phosphorus adsorption capacity of 0.56 mg/***-modified Orange Tree B C 3h/500℃showed the best performance for ammonia removal with an adsorption capacity of 1.72 mg/*** characterization showed that P=O bonds were formed after the adsoiption of phosphorus by modified BC,N-H bonds were formed after ammonia adsorption.X P S analysis revealed that the key process of ammonia adsorption was the ion exchange between K+and N H *** adsorption was related to oxidation and interaction between PO43-and Fe3+.According to X R D results,ammonia was found in the form of potassium amide,while phosphorus was found in the form of iron hydrogen *** sorption isotherms showed that the Freundlich equation fits better for phosphorus adsorption,while the Langmuir equation fits better for ammonia *** simulated runoff infiltration experiment showed that 97.3%of ammonia was removed by Al-modified Orange tree B C 3h/500℃,and 92.9%of phosphorus was removed by Fe-modified Tea tree B C 2h/400℃.

Thermal performance of a metal hydride reactor for hydrogen storage with cooling/heating by natural convection

Metal hydride(MH)systems can be used for storage in stationary facilities of hydrogen with a high volume density at temperatures and pressures close to ambient ***,the possibility of using passive heating/cooling systems or regenerative heat exchangers has been studied to improve the energy efficiency of MH systems for hydrogen storage without the need for forced circulation of a heating/cooling *** convection of air may be used to passively remove/add heat as required for proper operation of a MH *** these conditions,the MH reactor can operate at a constant ambient air temperature and be driven by a difference in pressure between the source and the consumer of *** operation of MH systems with natural convective heating/cooling has not been systematically investigated as yet,a tubular MH reactor based on this principle is examined in this ***-thirds of the internal volume ofø25.4×1 mm tube is occupied by a composition of LaNi5 and aluminium foam(one linear metre contains 1.1 kg of LaNi5 with a hydrogen capacity of 153 NL H2).Annular fins are used to increase heat transfer to *** and simplified mathematical models of the systems of this class are proposed and *** is shown that acceptable hydrogen charging/discharging rates in such systems are achieved with proper selection of fining *** from a hydrogen source at a pressure of 10 atm and an ambient air temperature of 10 to 30℃ takes 15 min.A reactor with a length of 1 m can desorb almost all stored hydrogen at a minimum outlet pressure of 0.45 bar to feed 30-300 W fuel cells.

Long-Lasting Stretching Induces Muscle Hypertrophy:A Meta-Analysis of Animal Studies

Muscular hypertrophy depends on metabolic exhaustion as well as mechanical load on the *** tension seems to be the crucial factor to stimulate protein *** present meta-analysis was conducted to determine whether stretching can generate adequate mechanical tension to induce muscle *** used PubMed,Web of Science,and Scopus to search for literature examining the effects of long-term stretching on muscle mass,muscle cross-sectional area,fiber cross-sectional area,and fiber *** there was no sufficient number of studies investigating long-lasting stretching in humans,we only included original animal studies in the current ***,we identified 16 studies meeting the inclusion criteria(*** of at least 15 min per day).The 16 studies yielded 39 data points for muscle mass,11 data points for muscle cross-sectional area,20 data points for fiber cross-sectional area,and 10 data points for fiber *** all designs and categories,statistically significant increases were found for muscle mass(d=8.51;95%CI 7.11-9.91),muscle cross-sectional area(d=7.91;95%CI 5.75-10.08),fiber cross-sectional area(d=5.81;95%CI 4.32-7.31),and fiber number(d=4.62;95%CI 2.54-6.71).The findings show an(almost)continuous positive effect of long-term stretching on the listed parameters,so that it can be assumed that stretch training with adequate intensity and duration leads to hypertrophy and hyperplasia,at least in animal studies.A general transferability to humans-certainly with limited effectiveness-can be hypothesized but requires further research and training studies.

CO_(2)-Free Calcium Carbide Manufacturing: Demanded Strategy in the Carbon-Neutral Chemical Industry

Calcium carbide is considered a possible key component in the sustainable carbon cycle,including convenient recycling of carbon wastes to industrial ***,currently employed CaC2 manufacturing process produces significant amounts of CO_(2).One of the main factors of its appearance is the formation of carbon oxide during the *** reaction of lime ore with coal inevitably results in the formation of CO and the loss of one carbon *** is usually burnt,forming CO_(2) to maintain the required high temperature during synthesis – 2200 ℃.In the present study,we discuss that the use of calcium metal instead of lime represents a good opportunity to prevent CO_(2) emission since the reaction of Ca with carbon occurs in an atom-efficient manner and results in only CaC_(2) at a much lower temperature of 1100 ℃.Here,the reaction of Ca with carbon was successfully tested to synthesize CaC_(2).The desired product was isolated in gram-scale amounts in 97.2% yield and 99% *** environmental friendliness of the proposed method originates from the calculations of the *** is provided concerning the cost factor of Ca within the considered process.
