Web-Based Sea Level Change Simulation System Using PNG Elevation Tiles and Smart Tile Architecture

We have developed a web-based processing system that can simulate positive and negative sea level changes globally by selecting the best Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for a target region from multiple DEMs. A PNG elevation tile format is used as the DEM format, which reduces the DEM data size. The PNG tile format implements client-based processing, and the DEM data are provided from different websites. In addition, the smart tile architecture is adopted, which enables on-demand simulation by adding a tile conversion process (i.e., a DEM selection process) during image drawing by using JavaScript. To demonstrate the system, we have employed three DEMs, i.e., the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) map (~10-m resolution), the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Models (ASTER GDEM version 3) as global land area (~30-m resolution), and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans as bathymetric data (~1000-m resolution). The ASTER Global Water Bodies Database is also used in the data selection process. The GSI provides their DEM in a PNG elevation tile format, and the other data are provided by the Geological Survey of Japan in PNG elevation tile format. We assume the current DEM sea level as 0 m, and the sea level can be changed to an arbitrary integer value (−10,000 to 10,000 m). Combining ASTER GDEM for land and GEBCO for sea makes it possible to target DEM of the whole earth. Moreover, it was shown that if a higher resolution DEM is available, it is possible to combine the higher resolution DEM in that area. The combining the PNG elevation tile format with the smart tile architecture demonstrates the possibilities of a client-based web processing service like that of the server-based OGC Web Processing Service.

Creation of New Global Land Cover Map with Map Integration

We present here a new approach to the development of a global land cover map. We combined three existing global land cover maps (MOD12, GLC2000, and UMD) based on the principle that the majority view prevails and validated the resulting map by using information collected as part of the Degree Confluence Project (DCP). We used field survey information gathered by DCP volunteers from 4211 worldwide locations to validate the new land cover map, as well as the three existing land cover maps that were combined to create it. Agreement between the DCP-derived information and the land cover maps was 61.3% for our new land cover map, 60.3% for MOD12, 58.9% for GLC2000, and 55.2% for UMD. Although some of the improvements we achieved were not statistically significant, this project has shown that an improved land cover map can be developed and well-validated globally using our method.

Protective role of electrophile-reactive glutathione for DNA damage repair inhibitory effect of dibromoacetonitrile

Dibromoacetonitrile(DBAN) is a disinfection byproduct(DBP) and linked with cancer in rodents, but the mechanism of its carcinogenicity has not been fully elucidated. We recently reported that DBAN induced inhibition of nucleotide excision repair(NER). In this study, we investigated if glutathione(GSH) is involved in the DBAN-induced inhibition of NER. Human keratinocytes Ha Ca T were pretreated with L-buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine(BSO) to deplete intracellular GSH. BSO treatment markedly potentiated the DBAN-induced NER inhibition as well as intracellular oxidation. The recruitment of NER proteins(transcription factor IIH, and xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group G) to DNA damage sites was inhibited by DBAN, which was further exacerbated by BSO treatment. Our results suggest that intracellular GSH protects cells from DBAN-induced genotoxicity including inhibition of DNA damage repair.

Long-lasting discussion: Adverse effects of intraoperative blood loss and allogeneic transfusion on prognosis of patients with gastric cancer

Gastrectomy with radical lymph node dissection is the most promising treatment avenue for patients with gastric cancer. However, this procedure sometimes induces excessive intraoperative blood loss and requires perioperative allogeneic blood transfusion. There are lasting discussions and controversies about whether intraoperative blood loss or perioperative blood transfusion has adverse effects on the prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. We reviewed laboratory and clinical evidence of these associations in patients with gastric cancer. A large amount of clinical evidence supports the correlation between excessive intraoperative blood loss and adverse effects on the prognosis. The laboratory evidence revealed three possible causes of such adverse effects: anti-tumor immunosuppression, unfavorable postoperative conditions, and peritoneal recurrence by spillage of cancer cells into the pelvis. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have suggested the adverse effects of perioperative blood transfusions on prognostic parameters such as all-cause mortality, recurrence, and postoperative complications. There are two possible causes of adverse effects of blood transfusions on the prognosis: Anti-tumor immunosuppression and patient-related confounding factors (e.g., preoperative anemia). These factors are associated with a worse prognosis and higher requirement for perioperative blood transfusions. Surgeons should make efforts to minimize intraoperative blood loss and transfusions during gastric cancer surgery to improve patients’ prognosis.

Study of photoexcited-carrier dynamics in GaAs photoconductive switches using dynamic terahertz emission microscopy

We propose dynamic terahertz(THz) emission microscopy(DTEM) to visualize temporal–spatial dynamics of photoexcited carriers in electronic materials. DTEM utilizes THz pulses emitted from a sample by probe pulses irradiated after pump pulse irradiation to perform time-resolved two-dimensional mapping of the THz pulse emission, reflecting various carrier dynamics. Using this microscopy, we investigated carrier dynamics in the gap region of low-temperature-grown Ga As and semi-insulating Ga As photoconductive switches of the identical-dipole type. The observed DTEM images are well explained by the change in the electric potential distribution between the electrodes caused by the screening effect of the photoexcited electron-hole pairs.

Partial sine wave tracking dual mode control topology for a single-phase transformerless photovoltaic system

A unique high efficiency photovoltaic(PV)system is presented. It uses partial sine wave tracking for a pulse-width modulation(PWM) boost converter as well as a full-bridge inverter. The boost converter and full-bridge inverter are connected via a compact intermediate film capacitor(i.e. non-smoothing DC link stage). PWM switching is activated by a dual mode control technique. In the proposed topology, simultaneous switching of both power conversion stages is avoided and therefore this increases the power conversion efficiency. The distinctive operating principles of these two power processing stages are discussed and analyzed with the experimental results for single-phase loading of the PV system.

Shearing Mechanism of Straight Thin Copper Wires at Connecting Terminal due to Lightning Current

When a lightning current is impressed through a copper wire, the copper wire would be melted. A straight thin copper wire with a diameter of 0.1 mm,~ is melted due to the specific melting Joule heating （j^2t）m in an adiabatic condition. However, it has been recognized in the experiment that the thicker copper wires of φ1 mm are not completely melted, but sheared mainly at the connecting terminal by a relatively low impulse current. Electro-magnetic mechanical shearing stress, etc. are discussed in addition to the conventional Joule heating. New broken mechanisms were presumed and proved in the additional experiments.

Is the measurement of drain amylase content useful for predicting pancreas-related complications after gastrectomy with systematic lymphadenectomy?
