Secular change in lifetime of granitic crust and the continental growth: A new view from detrital zircon ages of sandstones

U-Pb ages of detrital zircons were newly dated for 4 Archean sandstones from the Pilbara craton in Australia, Wyoming craton in North America, and Kaapvaal craton in Africa. By using the present results with previously published data, we compiled the age spectra of detrital zircons for 2.9, 2.6, 2.3,1.0, and0.6 Ga sandstones and modern river sands in order to document the secular change in age structure of continental crusts through time. The results demonstrated the following episodes in the history of continental crust：（1） low growth rate of the continents due to the short cycle in production/destruction of granitic crust during the Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic（2.9-23 Ga）,（2） net increase in volume of the continents during Paleo-to Mesoproterozoic（2.3-1.0 Ga）, and（3） net decrease in volume of the continents during the Neoproterozoic and Phanerozoic（after 1.0 Ga）. In the Archean and Paleoproterozoic, the embryonic continents were smaller than the modern continents, probably owing to the relatively rapid production and destruction of continental crust. This is indeed reflected in the heterogeneous crustal age structure of modern continents that usually have relatively small amount of Archean crusts with respect to the post-Archean ones. During the Mesoproterozoic, plural continents amalgamated into larger ones comparable to modern continental blocks in size. Relatively older crusts were preserved in continental interiors, whereas younger crusts were accreted along continental *** addition to continental arc magmatism, the direct accretion of intra-oceanic island arc around continental peripheries also became important for net continental growth. Since 1.0 Ga, total volume of continents has decreased, and this appears consistent with on-going phenomena along modern active arc-trench system with dominant tectonic erosion and/or arc subduction. Potentiality of immunotherapy against hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),the predominant form of primary liver cancer,is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related death. Despite the high incidence,treatment options remain limited for advanced HCC,and as a result prognosis continues to be poor. Current therapeutic options,surgery,chemotherapy and radiotherapy,have only modest efficacy. New treatment modalities to prolong survival and to minimize the risk of adverse response are desperately needed for patients with advanced HCC. Tumor immunotherapy is a promising,novel treatment strategy that may lead to improvements in both treatment-associated toxicity and outcome. The strategies have developed in part through genomic studies that have yielded candidate target molecules and in part through basic biology studies that have defined the pathways and cell types regulating immune response. Here,we summarize the various types of HCC immunotherapy and argue that the newfound field of HCC immunotherapy might provide critical advantages in the effort to improve prognosis of patients with advanced HCC. Already several immunotherapies,such as tumor-associated antigen therapy,immune checkpoint inhibitors and cell transfer immunotherapy,have demonstrated safety and feasibility in HCC patients. Unfortunately,immunotherapy currently has low efficacy in advanced stage HCC patients; overcoming this chal lenge will place immunotherapy at the forefront of HCC treatment,possibly in the near future.

A crucial problem in achieving innovative high-throughput materials growth with machine learning,such as Bayesian optimization(BO),and automation techniques has been a lack of an appropriate way to handle missing data due to experimental ***,we propose a BO algorithm that complements the missing data in optimizing materials growth *** proposed method provides a flexible optimization algorithm that searches a wide multi-dimensional parameter *** demonstrate the effectiveness of the method with simulated data as well as in its implementation for actual materials growth,namely machine-learning-assisted molecular beam epitaxy(ML-MBE)of SrRuO_(3),which is widely used as a metallic electrode in oxide *** the exploitation and exploration in a wide three-dimensional parameter space,while complementing the missing data,we attained tensile-strained SrRuO3 film with a high residual resistivity ratio of 80.1,the highest among tensile-strained SrRuO3 films ever reported,in only 35 MBE growth runs.

Association between ADAMTS13 activity-VWF antigen imbalance and the therapeutic effect of HAIC in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND Prediction of HAIC treatment response is important for improving the prognosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).The progression of HCC is related to hypercoagulability and *** is known that ADAMTS13 and von Willebrand factor(VWF)are related to *** addition,previous study reported that the association between ADAMTS13 and VWF,and angiogenesis via vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF).Recently,ADAMTS13 and VWF have been associated with the prognosis in patients with various kinds of cancer undergoing *** To investigate whether ADAMTS13 and VWF become useful biomarkers of treatment response in HCC patients before the initiation of HAIC *** Seventy-two patients were enrolled in this ***13 activity(ADAMTS13:AC),VWF antigen(VWF:Ag)and VEGF levels were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** and multivariable analyses were performed to determine the predictive factors of treatment response in patients with HCC undergoing HAIC *** ADAMTS13:AC levels in HCC patients with stable disease(SD)+partial response(PR)of HAIC treatment were significantly higher than those with progressive disease(PD)(P2.7)had higher VEGF levels than those with low ratio(≤2.7).Multivariable analysis revealed that VWF:Ag/ADAMTS13:AC ratio was a predictive factor of HAIC treatment *** VWF:Ag/ADAMTS13:AC ratio may become a useful biomarker of treatment response in HCC patients before the initiation of HAIC treatment.

Screening of agonistic activities against four nuclear receptors in wastewater treatment plants in Japan using a yeast two-hybrid assay

To assess the potential endocrine disruptive effects through multiple nuclear receptors （NRs）, especially non-steroidal NRs, in municipal wastewater, we examined the agonistic activities on four NRs （estrogen receptor α, thyroid hormone receptor α, retinoic acid receptor ct and retinoid X receptor α） of untreated and treated wastewater from municipal wastewater treatment plants （WWTPs） in Japan using a yeast two-hybrid assay. Investigation of the influent and effluent of seven WWTPs revealed that agonistic activities against steroidal and non-steroidal NRs were always detected in the influents and partially remained in the effluents. Further investigation of four WWTPs employing conventional activated sludge, pseudo-anoxic-oxic, anoxic-oxic and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic processes revealed that the ability to reduce the agonistic activity against each of the four NRs varies depending on the treatment process. These results indicated that municipal wastewater in Japan commonly contains endocrine disrupting chemicals that exert agonistic activities on steroidal and non-steroidal NRs, and that some of these chemicals are released into the natural aquatic environment. Although the results obtained in yeast assays suggested that measured levels of non-steroidal NR agonists in the effluent of WWTPs were not likely to cause any biological effect, further study is required to assess their possible risks in detail.

Biomarkers for the early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Although the prognosis of patients with HCC is generally poor, the5-year survival rate is > 70% if patients are diagnosed at an early stage. However, early diagnosis of HCC is complicated by the coexistence of inflammation and cirrhosis. Thus, novel biomarkers for the early diagnosis of HCC are required. Currently, the diagnosis of HCC without pathological correlation is achieved by analyzing serum α.fetoprotein levels combined with imaging techniques. Advances in genomics and proteomics platforms and biomarker assay techniques over the last decade have resulted in the identification of numerous novel biomarkers and have improved the diagnosis of HCC. The most promising biomarkers,such as glypican-3, osteopontin, Golgi protein-73 and nucleic acids including microRNAs, are most likely to become clinically validated in the near future. These biomarkers are not only useful for early diagnosis of HCC, but also provide insight into the mechanisms driving oncogenesis. In addition, such molecular insight creates the basis for the development of potentially more effective treatment strategies. In this article,we provide an overview of the biomarkers that are currently used for the early diagnosis of HCC.

BACKGROUND The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients remains poor despite advances in treatment modalities and *** is important to identify useful markers for the early detection of HCC in *** antigen(PNA),originally reported in a rat carcinogenesis model,is increased in the tissues and serum of HCC *** To determine the diagnostic value of PNA for discriminating HCC and to characterize PNA-positive *** Patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related hepatic disorders were prospectively enrolled in this study,which included patients with hepatitis,with cirrhosis,and with HCC.A novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to measure serum PNA concentrations in *** Serum PNA concentrations were measured in 89 controls and 141 patients with HCV infections(50 hepatitis,44 cirrhosis,and 47 HCC).Compared with control and non-HCC patients,PNA was increased in *** receiver operating characteristic curve analysis,the sensitivity of PNA was similar to the HCC markers des-γ-carboxy-prothrombin(DCP)andα-fetoprotein(AFP),but the specificity of PNA was *** was no correlation between PNA and AFP and a significant but weak correlation between PNA and DCP in HCC ***,the correlations with biochemical markers were completely different for PNA,AFP,and DCP;glutamyl transpeptidase was highly correlated with PNA,but not with AFP or DCP,and was significantly higher in PNA-high patients than in PNA-low patients with HCV-related *** PNA may have the potential to diagnose a novel type of HCC in which glutamyl transpeptidase is positively expressed but AFP or DCP is weakly or negatively expressed.
