Response surface method for modeling the removal of carbon dioxide from a simulated gas using water absorption enhanced with a liquid-film-forming device

This paper presents the results from using a physical absorption process to absorb gaseous CO2mixed with N2using water by producing tiny bubbles via a liquid-film-forming device（LFFD）that improves the solubility of CO2in *** influence of various parameters—pressure,initial CO2concentration,gas-to-liquid ratios,and temperature—on the CO2removal efficiency and its absorption rate in water were investigated and estimated thoroughly by statistical polynomial models obtained by the utilization of the response surface method（RSM）with a central composite design（CCD）.Based on the analysis,a high efficiency of CO2capture can be reached in conditions such as low pressure,high CO2concentration at the inlet,low gas/liquid ratio,and low *** instance,the highest removal efficiency in the RSM–CCD experimental matrix of nearly 80%occurred for run number 20,which was conducted at 0.30 MPa,CO2concentration of 35%,gas/liquid ratio of 0.71,and temperature of 15℃.Furthermore,the coefficients of determination,R^2,were 0.996 for the removal rate and 0.982 for the absorption rate,implying that the predicted values computed by the constructed models correlate strongly and fit well with the experimental *** results obtained provide essential information for implementing this method properly and effectively and contribute a promising approach to the problem of CO2capture in air pollution treatment.

Inactivation effect of pressurized carbon dioxide on bacteriophage Qβ and ΦX174 as a novel disinfectant for water treatment

The inactivation effects of pressurized CO2 against bacteriophage Qβ and ФX 174 were investigated under the pressure of 0.3-0.9 MPa, initial concentration of 107-109 PFU/mL, and temperature of 17.8℃-27.2℃. The optimum conditions were found to be 0.7 MPa and an exposure time of 25 min. Under identical treatment conditions, a greater than 3.3-log reduction in bacteriophage Qβ was achieved by CO2, while a nearly 3.0 log reduction was observed for phage ФX174. The viricidal effects of N2O （an inactivation gas with similar characteristics to CO2）, normal acid （HC1）, and CO2 treatment with phosphate buffered saline affirmed the chemical nature of CO2 treatment. The pumping cycle, depressurization rate, and release of intracellular substances caused by CO2 were its viricidal mechanisms. The results indicate that CO2 has the potential for use as a disinfectant without forming disinfection by-products.

Physiological Responses to Agonist-Antagonist Superset Resistance Training

Purpose To investigate the physiological responses to low-load,superset resistance training(two exercises for the agonist and antagonist muscles performed without rest between exercises)to failure using elastic *** Twenty-three athletes were randomized to either a superset group(S,n=12,average age:19.8±1.5 years)or a traditional set group(T,n=11,average age:20.1±1.4 years).Strength,cross-sectional area(CSA)and muscular endurance of the biceps and triceps brachii were assessed before and after 8 *** responses(muscle thickness)were measured during one testing *** Muscle thickness of the biceps significantly increased in both T group(P0.05)or S group(P>0.05).Blood lactate also increased in both groups after one bout of training(T:from 1.3±0.3 to 5.5±2.4 mmol/L,S:from 1.4±0.5 to 5.1±1.5 mmol/L,P<0.05).After 8-week training,both groups showed significant increases in the biceps(T:13.2%±5.0%;S:12.9%±7.3%,P<0.05)and triceps(T:9.5%±9.3%,S:4.8%±4.1%,P<0.05)without differences between *** in one repetition maximum for the bench press(7.8%±6.5%,P<0.05)and maximal voluntary contraction for the arm extensors(9.3%±11.6%,P<0.05)were observed for the T group *** in muscular endurance were observed only in the S group for the bench press(26.0%±19.1%,P<0.05)and the barbell curl(17.2%±16.6%,P<0.05).Conclusions Superset training may enhance muscular endurance while attenuating maximal strength *** does not appear to be a hypertrophic benefit to performing superset training,but it may provide a time-efficient strategy to achieve adaptations in muscle mass.

Occurrence of estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals concern in sewage plant effluent

The purpose of this study was to give a worldwide overview of the concentrations of typical estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals （EDCs） in the effluent of sewage plants and then compare the concentra- tion distribution of the estrogenic EDCs in ten countries based on the survey data of the estrogenic EDCs research. The concentrations of three main categories （totally eight kinds） of estrogenic EDCs including steroidal estrogens （estrone （El）, estradiol （E2）, estriol （E3） and 17a- ethynylestradiol （EE2））, phenolic compounds （nonylphe- nol （NP） and bisphenol A （BPA）） and phthalate esters （dibutyl phthalate （DBP） and dibutyl phthalate （2- ethylhexyl） phthalate （DEHP）） in the effluents of sewage plants reported in major international journals over the past decade were collected. The statistics showed that the concentration distributions of eight kinds of EDCs were in the range of ng·L^-1 to μg·L^-1. The concentrations of steroidal estrogens mainly ranged within 50.00 ng. L-1, and the median concentrations of El, E2, E3 and EE2 were 11.00, 3.68, 4.90 and 1.00 ng·L^-1, respectively. Phenolic compounds and phthalate esters were found at pg. L-1 level （some individual values were at the high level of 40.00 μg·L^-1）. The median concentrations of BPA, NP, DBP and DEHP were 0.06, 0.55, 0.07 and 0.88 μg·L^-1, respectively. The concentrations of phenolic compounds and phthalate esters in the effluents were higher than that of steroids estrogens. The analysis of the concentration in various ten countries showed that steroids estrogens, phenolic compounds and phthalate esters in sewage plant effluents were detected with high concentration in Canada, Spain and China, respectively.

mPGES-1 expression in non-cancerous liver tissue impacts on postoperative recurrence of HCC

AIM:To investigate whether microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and in non-cancerous liver affects HCC prognosis after hepatectomy. METHODS: The relationship between patient clinical prof iles, tumor factors, surgical determinants, and mPGES-1 expression and the recurrence-free survival rate were examined in 64 patients who underwent curative hepatectomy between March 2003 and December 2006. RESULTS: The scores for mPGES-1 expression were higher in well differentiated and moderately differentiated HCC tissues than in poorly differentiated HCC tissues (well differentiated, 5.1 ± 2.7; moderately differentiated, 5.1 ± 1.7; poorly differentiated, 3.0 ± 1.8). In noncancerous liver tissues, the mPGES-1 levels were higher in injured liver tissues than in normal tissues. Cirrhotic livers had higher mPGES-1 levels than livers with chronic hepatitis (normal livers, 3.3 ± 0.7; chronic hepatitic livers, 5.4 ± 1.9; cirrhotic livers, 6.4 ± 1.6). A univariate analysis revealed that the recurrence-free survival rate was signif icantly lower in patients with vascular invasion,a higher mPGES-1 level in non-cancerous liver tissue,a larger tumor diameter (≥5 cm), and a lower serum albumin level (≤3.7 g/dL). The mPGES-1 expression in HCC tissues did not correlate well with postoperative recurrence. A multivariate analysis demonstrated that the presence of vascular invasion and higher mPGES-1 levels were statistically significant independent predictors for early postoperative recurrence of ***: Increased mPGES-1 expression in noncancerous liver tissues is closely associated with the early recurrence of HCC after curative resection.

Microstructural evolution and mechanism of grain growth in magnesia ceramics prepared by high pressure and temperature with ultra-high heating rate

Vascular endothelial growth factor 165b expression in stromal cells and colorectal cancer

AIM:To characterize the implications of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)-A in stromal cells and colorectal cancer and the expression of VEGF-A splice ***:VEGF-A expression in tumor and stromal cells from 165 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer was examined by *** association between VEGF-A expression status and clinicopathological factors was *** freshfrozen samples were obtained for laser capture microdissection to analyze the splice variants of ***:VEGF-A was expressed in 53.9% and 42.4% of tumor and stromal cells,***-A expression in tumor cells(t-VEGF-A) was associated with advanced clinical stage(stage 0,1/9;stage 1,2/16;stage 2,32/55;stage 3,38/66;stage 4,16/19,P < 0.0001).VEGF-A expression in stromal cells(s-VEGF-A) increased in the earlier clinical stage(stage 0,7/9;stage 1,6/16;stage 2,33/55;stage 3,22/66;stage 4,5/19;P = 0.004).Multivariate analyses for risk factors of recurrence showed that only s-VEGF-A expression was an independent risk factor for recurrence(relative risk 0.309,95% confidence interval 0.141-0.676,P = 0.0033).The five-year disease-free survival(DFS) rates of t-VEGF-A-positive and-negative cases were 51.4% and 62.9%,*** was no significant difference in t-VEGF-A expression *** five-year DFS rates of s-VEGF-A-positive and-negative cases were 73.8% and 39.9%,respectively.s-VEGFA-positive cases had significantly better survival than s-VEGF-A-negative cases(P = 0.0005).Splice variant analysis revealed that t-VEGF-A was mainly composed of VEGF165 and that s-VEGF-A included both VEGF165 and *** cases with no venous invasion(v0),the level of VEGF165b mRNA was significantly higher(v0 204.5 ± 122.7,v1 32.5 ± 36.7,v2 2.1 ± 1.7,P = 0.03).The microvessel density tended to be lower in cases with higher VEGF165b mRNA ***:s-VEGF-A appears be a good prognostic factor for colorectal cancer and includes VEGF165 and VEGF165b.

Non-robotic minimally invasive gastrectomy as an independent risk factor for postoperative intra-abdominal infectious complications: A single-center, retrospective and propensity score-matched analysis

BACKGROUND Minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer(GC) has gained widespread use as a safe curative procedure especially for early *** To determine risk factors for postoperative complications after minimally invasive gastrectomy for *** Between January 2009 and June 2019, 1716 consecutive patients were referred to our division for primary GC. Among them, 1401 patients who were diagnosed with both clinical and pathological Stage Ⅲ or lower GC and underwent robotic gastrectomy(RG) or laparoscopic gastrectomy(LG) were enrolled. Retrospective chart review and multivariate analysis were performed for identifying risk factors for postoperative *** Morbidity following minimally invasive gastrectomy was observed in 7.5% of the patients. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that non-robotic minimally invasive surgery, male gender, and an operative time of ≥ 360 min were significant independent risk factors for morbidity. Therefore, morbidity was compared between RG and LG. Accordingly, propensity-matched cohort analysis revealed that the RG group had significantly fewer intra-abdominal infectious complications than the LG group(2.5% vs 5.9%, respectively;P = 0.038), while no significant differences were noted for other local or systemic *** analyses of the propensity-matched cohort revealed that non-robotic minimally invasive surgery [odds ratio = 2.463(1.070–5.682);P = 0.034] was a significant independent risk factor for intra-abdominal infectious *** The findings showed that robotic surgery might improve short-term outcomes following minimally invasive radical gastrectomy by reducing intra-abdominal infectious complications.
