The alternative types of composite structure made of wood and cement based building materials needs to meet with the high demand for earthquake-resistant houses in Indonesia. In order to understand the mechanism of earthquake resisting performance of shear wall, it is necessary to investigate not only elastic behavior of shear walls but also non-linear one. In this study, series of full-scale experiments on timber frame shear walls composed of Akasia wood (Acacia mangium) sheathed by Fiber Cement Board (FCB) were carried out. For predicting skeleton curve, a series of theoretical equations was derived, which cannot only solve arbitrary nail pattern shear wall but also nonlinear behavior after yielding. Further, for describing hysteresis loops of shear walls, so-called Normalized Cyclic Loop (NCL) model was adopted. By combining two theoretical approaches, weintended to predict whole cyclic shear wall behaviors tested. Good agreements were obtained from comparison between experiment and prediction. The information obtain by this study will be useful for practical engineers or structural designers to design the high performance earthquake resisting timber houses.

The time-history response of a structure-pile system during soil liquefaction is highly complicated and several analytical methods have been proposed through the accuracy verification based on the comparison with the experimental works. However, the analytical methods with higher accuracy often require large computational loads and are not necessarily preferred in the actual design practice. On the other hand, while the response spectrum method is not accurate compared to the aforementioned methods, it can provide useful design guidelines in the preliminary stage for structure-pile systems under soil liquefaction with acceptable accuracy. In this paper, the previously proposed response spectrum method for a structure-pile-soil system is used where the effect of soil liquefaction is taken into account by introducing the so-called p-multiplier method. It is shown that, while in the case of inner partial liquefaction with a non-liquefied layer at the top, the demand on the pile moment is large due to the inertial effect of that non-liquefied layer at the top, in the case of overall liquefaction near the ground surface, the demand is smaller than the case of inner partial liquefaction.

The shear wall with and without openings that served as a structural element or/and partition wall was utilized in a low-cost housing for the low-income people in Indonesia. The houses,however,should be withstoodfrom earthquake inertial force, so there must be no casualties when disaster struck. The alternative types of composite structure made of wood and cement based building materials needed to meet with the high demand for earthquake-resistant houses in Indonesia. In order to understand the mechanism of earthquake resisting performance of shear wall, we needs to investigate behavior of shear wallsnot only for cyclic static but alsofor dynamic loading. In this study, theseries of full-scale experiment on timber frame shear walls with and without openings,compose of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) engineered wood (Paraserianthes Falcatariaand Hevea Brasiliensis) and sheathed by Fiber Cement Board (FCB), was carried *** analyzing testing result using theoretical approaches, we intended to predict static initial stiffness and yielding strength as well as basic dynamic properties shear walls. For static behavior, good agreements were obtain from comparison between experiment and theoretical prediction based on mechanical model. While, for dynamic behavior, agreement was not sufficient due tothe effect of bending and rocking of actual test specimens. The information obtain by this study will be useful for practical engineers or structural designers to design the high performance earthquake resisting timber houses with a low construction cost.

In the current study,we examined the effects of beef processing to produce pastirma on the physicochemical properties of proteins in ***(SEM)*** concentrations significantly increased in pastirma muscles(P<0.01),as a result of the salting and curing *** surface hydrophobicity values of processed samples were higher than those without processing at all guanidine-HCl concentrations,suggesting hydrophobicity increased,which may attribute to the new generated peptides during the traditional pastirma-making *** metmyoglobin content greatly increased(by as much as 89%)in pastirma samples compared with the unprocessed *** images of histology also demonstrate that the pastirma processing had no negative impact on the structure of the *** results from this study suggest that the traditional pastirma-making process catalyzed the enzymatic digestion of muscle proteins,and the differences in some physicochemical parameters between the control and pastirma samples were thus likely to be contributable to protein ***,the traditional pastirma-making process results in the degradation of many proteins into peptides,which might then be obtainable as functional components to treat human dietand lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension,hyperglycemia syndromes or to be used as nutraceuticals.©2013 Beijing Academy of Food *** and hosting by Elsevier *** rights reserved.

Time Course of Changes in Trabecular Bone Microstructure in Rats with Spinal Cord Injury

The study aimed to examine changes in trabecular bone microstructure （TBMS） during the period of 5 weeks after the injury in a rat model of spinal cord injury （SCI）. Eight-week-old male Wistar rats underwent surgical transection of the lower thoracic spinal cord （SCI, n = 16） or sham operation （SHAM, n = 14）. TBMS （tissue volume, bone volume, bone volume fraction, trabecular thickness, width, number, separation, connectivity density, and trabecular bone pattern factor）, assessed using a micro-computed tomography, was deteriorated 1, 3 and 5 weeks after SCI. In addition, both bone mass and serum biochemical parameters were determined. Dry bone weight, ash weight, bone mineral content （BMC）, and BMC/tissue-volume were significantly lower in the SCI group than in the SHAM group throughout the experimental period. Serum inorganic phosphate and alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly lower in the SCI group than in the SHAM group 1 week after the surgery. SCI resulted in rapid deterioration of both bone mass and microstructure. These changes appeared as early as 1 week after SCI. Based on the authors＇ results, it should be noted that in SCI patients, interventions for preventing bone loss should start as soon as possible after the injury.

Clean energy is the most promising technology for sustainable growth. The development of clean energy requires a considerable amount of R ＆ D （research ＆ development） expenditure and various core technologies, and therefore, international research collaboration is necessary for prompt and efficient development. The study is aimed at establishing a knowledge base that can help to prepare international research collaboration policies for solving global challenges effectively. The authors demonstrate the research capacity and international research collaboration in solar cell and fuel cell technologies, using global research network diagrams gathered from 35,322 and 33,136 academic papers, respectively. The diagrams include the data of research competency and co-authorship. More than 6,000 institutions and 100 countries are involved in each field. Based on the diagrams, the technologies are compared and international collaboration is analyzed. A valley of research collaboration in Asia is identified for both technologies. Then, science and education policies that influence the structures are discussed.

Pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) usually manifests asfever and diarrhea in hospitalized patients treated withsystemic antibiotics. We described a case of PMC withintestinal obstruction but without diarrhea. A 60-yearold man was hospitalized for chemotherapy for the treatment of Burkitt lymphoma of the stomach. The patient became febrile and complained of crampy abdominal pain during the post-chemotherapy nadir. Plain abdominal radiography showed some intestinal gas and niveau. Because stool cytotoxin assay for clostridium difficile was positive and colon fiberscopic examination showed a pseudomembrane at the left side of the colon,and a diagnosis of PMC was made. Treatment with intracolonic vancomycin administration by colonoscopy and nasoileus tube was successful. Physicians should take into account the possibility of bowel obstruction due to PMC occurring in patients undergoing chemotherapy and perform emergency colonoscopy examination of suspected cases.

Sediment-Loading Processes in a Forested Catchment: Modeling and Observations

In order to investigate sediment-loading processes in a catchment, the daily time series of river discharge and sediment load were applied to a semi-distributed model, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The time series of discharge and sediment load were obtained by monitoring the river stage and water turbidity of the Oikamanai River, Hokkaido, Japan, in the rainfall season (April-November) of 2011-2014. The catchment is forested (ca 90% area) but underlain by the Neogene sedimentary rocks with currently active faults and forest soils with tephra layers, which tend to frequently produce slope failure such as landslide and bank collapse by rainfall or snowmelt. The water turbidity, T, in ppm was converted into suspended sediment concentration, SSC, in g/L by applying the linear relationship between T and SSC. The acquisition of the time series of discharge, Q (m3/s) and sediment load, L (=Q·SSC in g/s) of the river allowed us to distinguish the fluvial sediment transport, accompanied by slope failure in the upstream, from that under no slope failure. The SWAT was used to simulate soil erosion and identify the region prone to the soil erosion in the Oikamanai River basin. The model’s results showed a satisfactory agreement between daily observed and simulated sediment load as indicated by the high Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency. This evidences that the upper mountainous region of the catchment provides a main sediment source, accompanied by slope failure.

Thellungiella salsuginea （formerly T. halophila）, a species closely related to Arabidopsis （Arabidopsis thali-ana）, is tolerant not only to high salt levels, but also to chilling, freezing, and ozone. Here, we report that T. salsuginea also shows greater heat tolerance than Arabidopsis. We identified T. salsuginea HsfAld （TsHsfAld） as a gene that can confer marked heat tolerance on Arabidopsis. TsHsfAld was identified via Full-length cDNA Over-eXpressing gene （FOX） hunt-ing from among a collection of heat-stress-related T. salsuginea cDNAs. Transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing TsHsfAld showed constitutive up-regulation of many genes in the Arabidopsis AtHsfA1 regulon under normal growth tempera-ture. in Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplasts, TsHsfAld was localized in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. TsHsfAld also interacted with AtHSP90, which negatively regulates AtHsfAls by forming HsfA1-HSP90 complexes in the cytoplasm. It is likely that the partial nuclear localization of TsHsfAld induced the expression of the AtHsfAld regulon in the transgenic plants at normal temperature. We also discovered that transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing AtHsfAldwere more heat-tolerant than wild-type plants and up-regulated the expression of the HsfAld regulon, as was observed in TsHsfAld-overexpressing plants. We propose that the products of both TsHsfAld and AtHsfAld function as positive regulators of Arabidopsis heat-stress response and would be useful for the improvement of heat-stress tolerance in other plants.
