Chinese topical herbal medicine gives additive effect on pharmaceutical agent on fracture healing

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the efficacy on the combination of oral strontium ranelate(Sr R)with a topical Chinese herbal paste on facilitation of fracture ***:An open fracture was created at the mid-shaft of the right tibia of rat.A herbal pastecalled CDR containing Honghua(Flos Carthami),Chuanxuduan(Radix Dipsaci Asperoidis)and Dahuang(Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei Palmati)was *** rats were treated with either CDR topically on the fracture site,or Sr R orally,or their *** turnover biochemical markers in serum were *** of the fracture was analyzed using micro-CT after 14 and 28 d,followed by histomorphometrical ***:Micro-computed tomography analysis revealed that the combined treatment of CDR with600 mg/g Sr R significantly increased the total callus density,mineralized callus volume fraction,mineralized callus mineral content and mineralized callus density of the callus after 28 d of *** result was consistent with the histomorphometrical analysis on the osteoid *** of biochemical markers showed that the combined treatments reduced the bone resorption that occurs temporarily after ***:This study demonstrated that the combined treatment of oral Sr R and topical CDR is effective to promote fracture healing by their additive effect on promoting bone formation and retarding bone resorption.

Seropharmacological Study on Osteogenic Effects of Post-Absorption Ingredients of An Osteoprotective Herbal Formula

Objective： To further investigate the in vitro effects of an osteoprotective herbal formula ＂ELP＂（Herba Epimedii, Fructus Ligustri Lucidi and Fructus Psora/eae） using seropharmacological approach. Methods： Rats were fed with ELP or its individual component herbs for 2 days. The serum containing the post-absorbed ingredients of the herbal items were collected for cell culture using UMR106 cell, RAW264.7 cell and mesenchymal stem cell （MSC） isolated from the bone marrow of the rats. The effects of the herbal-containing serum on cell toxicity were detected by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay; bromodeoxyuridine assay was conducted to measure the cell proliferation of UMR106 cell and MSC; cell activity was measured using colorimetric method, and mRNA expression of runt-related transcription factor 2 （Runx2）, alkaline phosphatase （ALP） and osteopontin （OPN） of UMR106 and MSC as well as matrix metalloproteinase 9 （MMP-9）, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase （TRAP） and cathepsin K of RAW264.7 were analyzed using real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results： ELP and its component serum exhibited no cytotoxic effects on the cells. The ELP-containing serum increased the proliferation of UMR106 cell and MSC by 25.7% and 14.4%, respectively and the alkaline phosphatase activity of MSC was increased by 42.6%. On the contrary, it inhibited the RAW264.7 cell differentiation by 29.2%. ELP serum upregulated the Runx2 expression of UMR and MSC by 1.18 fold and 1.27 fold, respectively. It also upregulated ALP and OPN expression in MSC by 1.69- and 2.12-fold, respectively. On the other hand, ELP serum down-regulated MMP-9 and cathepsin K expression of RAW264.7 cell by 0.46- and 0.36-fold, respectively. Conclusions： The serum of the animals fed with ELP contains active ingredients which are effective in promoting osteogenesis and inhibiting osteoclastogenesis.

Inhibitory effect of different Dendrobium species on LPS-induced inflammation in macrophages via suppression of MAPK pathways

Dendrobii Caulis(DC), named ‘Shihu' in Chinese, is a precious herb in traditional Chinese medicine. It is widely used to nourish stomach, enhance body fluid production, tonify "Yin" and reduce heat. More than thirty Dendrobium species are used as folk medicine. Some compounds from DC exhibit inhibitory effects on macrophage inflammation. In the present study, we compared the anti-inflammatory effects among eight Dendrobium species. The results provided evidences to support Dendrobium as folk medicine, which exerted its medicinal function partially by its inhibitory effects on inflammation. To investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Dendrobium species, mouse macrophage cell line RAW264.7 was activated by lipopolysaccharide. The nitric oxide(NO) level was measured using Griess reagent while the pro-inflammatory cytokines were tested by ELISA. The protein expressions of inducible NO synthase(iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs) phosphorylation were evaluated by Western blotting analysis. Among the eight Dendrobium species, both water extracts of D. thyrsiflorum ***(DTW) and D. chrysotoxum Lindl(DCHW) showed most significant inhibitory effects on NO production in a concentration-dependent manner. DTW also significantly reduced TNF-α, MCP-1, and IL-6 production. Further investigations showed that DTW suppressed iNOS and COX-2 expression as well as ERK and JNK phosphorylation, suggesting that the inhibitory effects of DTW on LPS-induced macrophage inflammation was through the suppression of MAPK pathways. In conclusion, D. thyrsiflorum *** was demonstrated to have potential to be used as alternative or adjuvant therapy for inflammation.

Influence of Teachers’Occupational Stress on Anxiety by Using Cross-Media Teaching Method

This paper is to study the conditions of teachers’occupational stress and anxiety by using cross-media teaching method,and reveals the inﬂuence relationship between *** this end,a questionnaire survey of 228 teachers using cross-media teaching method from 3 schools in Guangdong Province(China)was *** conclu-sions are as follows:Teachers who use cross-media teaching method have high levels of occupational stress and anxiety,lack of leadership and administrative support,overloaded work,state anxiety and trait anxiety are all at a high *** general characteristics differences,gender does not constitute a factor causing occupational stress and anxiety of the teachers using cross-media *** the increase in the use of cross-media teach-ing,teachers feel gradually increase of occupational stress and trait anxiety in more work tasks,and occupational stress and state anxiety shows ups and downs due to lack of school policy *** the relationship between occupational stress and anxiety,occupational stress and sub-variables without leadership and administrative sup-port,overloaded work,relationships with colleagues,and relationships with parents are all positively correlates with anxiety and have signiﬁcant positive ***,whether the inﬂuence of occupational stress sub-vari-able on anxiety,or the state anxiety and trait anxiety of the anxiety sub-variables,overloaded work and lack of leadership and administrative support have always been the key factors that cause ***,if the school or the relevant organization provides appropriate support and assistance to cross-media teaching,or appropri-ately reduce heavy tasks of teachers in cross-media teaching,so as to relieve occupational press and anxiety of the teachers,create good teaching quality,and promote the development of teaching technology.

Clinical values of Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer subgroup and up-to-7 criteria in intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization

BACKGROUND Transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)is a recommended treatment for patients with intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)but with variable treatment *** To determine factors for predicting outcomes of TACE in patients with intermediate stage B *** Patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC)stage B HCC who underwent TACE as the primary treatment were enrolled at Taichung Veterans General Hospital from January 2005 to December *** were assigned to either the objective responder(OR)group or the non-OR group according to mRECIST *** and radiological characteristics were compared between the 2 *** overall survival of enrolled subjects was *** In 128 enrolled patients,66(51.6%)were in the OR group and 62(48.4%)in the non-OR *** with the non-OR group,the OR group had a significantly smaller HCC size(6.55 cm vs 9.50 cm,P=0.001)and was within the up-to-7 criteria(50%vs 26.7%,P=0.001).After multivariable analyses,these significant associations still *** survival rate of all the subjects averaged 20.65±13.26 *** survival rate at 1-year was 64.8%,2-year was 46.9%,and 3-year was 31.2%.For those patients with OR to TACE,smaller tumor size and within up-to-7 criteria were associated with significantly better overall *** patients with subgroup B1 had the highest OR ratio(75%)and better overall survival(26.70±12.07 mo)after *** BCLC stage B HCC patients with smaller tumor size or within up-to-7 criteria had better survival outcomes to *** stage B subgroup is useful to predict refractoriness to TACE.

BACKGROUND Osseous hemangiomas,especially those located in the manubrium,are rare benign *** a review of the literature,only three case reports of sternal hemangioma were found.A precise diagnosis is difficult because of their nonspecific findings on computed tomography(CT)/magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).CASE SUMMARY An 88-year-old woman was suffering from a progressively enlarging mass in the *** CT images showed an osteolytic and expansile lesion with cortical *** malformation was suspected after CT-guided *** the dynamic MRI scans,the mass showed a bright signal on the T2-weighted image,peripheral nodular enhancement on the early-phase images and progressive centripetal fill-in on the delayed-phase *** hemangioma was suspected preoperatively based on the MRI features and finally confirmed by histopathologic *** This uncommon case demonstrates the possible characteristic features of manubrium cavernous hemangioma on dynamic MRI scans;knowledge about these features may prevent patients from developing catastrophic complications,such as rupture or internal hemorrhage,caused by biopsy or surgery.

Rare finding of primary aortoduodenal fistula on single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography of gastrointestinal bleeding: A case report

BACKGROUND Primary aortoduodenal fistula is a rare cause of gastrointestinal(GI)bleeding consisting of abnormal channels between the aorta and GI tract without previous vascular intervention that results in massive intraluminal *** SUMMARY A 67-year-old man was hospitalized for coffee ground vomiting,tarry stools,and colic abdominal *** was repeatedly admitted for active GI bleeding and hypovolemic *** and spontaneously stopped bleeders were undetectable on multiple GI endoscopy,angiography,computed tomography angiography(CTA),capsule endoscopy,and ^(99)mTc-labeled red blood cell(RBC)*** patient received supportive treatment and was discharged without signs of ***,he was re-admitted for bleeder *** CTA after a bleed revealed a small aortic aneurysm at the renal level contacting the fourth portion of the duodenum.A ^(99)mTc-labeled RBC singlephoton emission CT(SPECT)/CT scan performed during bleeding symptoms revealed active bleeding at the duodenal *** to his clinical symptoms(intermittent massive GI bleeding with hypovolemic shock,dizziness,dark red stool,and bloody vomitus)and the abdominal CTA and ^(99)mTc-labeled RBC SPECT/CT results,we suspected a small aneurysm and an aortoduodenal *** duodenal excision and duodenojejunal anastomosis were performed.A 7-mm saccular aneurysm arising from the anterior wall of the abdominal aorta near the left renal artery was *** intravascular stenting of the abdominal aorta was performed and his symptoms *** Our findings suggest that ^(99)mTc-labeled RBC SPECT/CT scanning can aid the diagnosis of a rare cause of active GI bleeding.
