Statistical extremes and peak factors in wind-induced vibration of tall buildings

In the structural design of tall buildings, peak factors have been widely used to predict mean extreme responses of tall buildings under wind excitations. Vanmarcke＇s peak factor is directly related to an explicit measure of structural reliability against a Gaussian response process. We review the use of this factor for time-variant reliability design by comparing it to the conven- tional Davenport＇s peak factor. Based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes, a new closed-form peak factor, the so-called Gamma peak factor, can be obtained for a non-Gaussian resultant response characterized by a Rayleigh distribution process. Using the Gamma peak factor, a combined peak factor method was developed for predicting the expected maximum resultant responses of a building undergoing lateral-torsional vibration. The effects of the standard deviation ratio of two sway components and the inter-component correlation on the evaluation of peak resultant response were also investigated. Utilizing wind tunnel data derived from synchronous multi-pressure measurements, we carried out a wind-induced time history response analysis of the Common- wealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council （CAARC） standard tall building to validate the applicability of the Gamma peak factor to the prediction of the peak resultant acceleration. Results from the building example indicated that the use of the Gamma peak factor enables accurate predictions to be made of the mean extreme resultant acceleration responses for dynamic service- ability performance design of modem tall buildings.

Impact of IPMOE on nursing tasks in the medical ward: A time-motion study

Introduction:The In-patient Medication Order Entry System (IPMOE) was first implemented in the medical ward of Princess Margaret Hospital,Hong *** was a local developed close-loop system including prescription,dispensing and administration *** on its impact on nursing tasks would be important for practice improvement and subsequent system ***:The study was conducted to quantify the nursing times across medication-associated tasks for paper-based MAR and computer-based IPMOE,including change in the tasks and time patterns before and after IPMOE ***:This was a prospective observation study in medical wards before (Jan 2014-Jun 2014) and after (Mar 2015-Jun 2015) the implementation of *** conducted 8-hr observation studies of individual nurses with a customized application to time various pre-categorized nursing *** inferences and interrupted time series analysis was performed to identify the change in the intercept and trends over time after ***:The average number of medication-related tasks was significantly reduced from 61.07 to 29.81,a reduction of 31.26 episodes per duty (P ks was reduced from 32 min (SD =21.57) to 26.57 min (SD =11.35) and the medication administration time increased from 37.93 min (SD-14.78) to 44.37 min (SD 19.45),but there was no overall significant difference in the time spent on each duty (P =0.315) between the two *** improving trend in the delayed effect was observed (P =0.03),which indicated a run-in period for new application was needed in clinical ***:Our study had shown the time motion observation could be applied to measure the impact of the IPMOE in a busy clinical *** classification of activities,validation,objective measurement and longitudinal evaluation,the method could be applied in various systems as well as different clinical settings in

Wastewater surveillance(WWS)can leverage its wide coverage,population-based sampling,and high monitoring frequency to capture citywide pandemic trends independent of clinical *** we conducted a nine months daily WWS for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARSCoV-2)from 12 wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs),covering approximately 80%of the population,to monitor infection dynamics in Hong kong,*** found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus concentration in wastewater was correlated with the daily number of reported cases and reached two pandemic peaks three days earlier during the study *** addition,two different methods were established to estimate the prevalence/incidence rates from wastewater *** estimated results from wastewater were consistent with findings from two independent citywide clinical surveillance programmes(rapid antigen test(RAT)surveillance and serology surveillance),but higher than the cases number reported by the Centre for Health Protection(CHP)of Hong kong,***,the effective reproductive number(R_(t))was estimated from wastewater measurements to reflect both citywide and regional transmission *** findings demonstrate that large-scale intensive WWS from WWTPs provides cost-effective and timely public health information,especially when the clinical surveillance is inadequate and *** approach also provides insights into pandemic dynamics at higher spatiotemporal resolutions,facilitating the formulation of effective control policies and targeted resource allocation.

Wind-Induced Response Characteristics of a Tall Building from GPS and Accelerometer Measurements

The main objectives of the research are to characterize the wind-induced resonant and slowly-varying (quasi-static) responses of a tall building under ambient wind excitations based on GPS measurements. The equipment used includes two sets of orthogonally aligned accelerometers, two GPS receivers and an ultrasonic anemometer. The natural frequencies of the wind-induced vibration of the tall building are determined by carrying out spectral analysis of the measured time series of acceleration. The time series are also used to estimate the structural damping with the random decrement technique (RDT). The results show that GPS can be effectively used to measure the resonant and slowly-varying responses of tall buildings with 3D mode shapes under wind excitations. The results from the GPS and the accelerometers agree well with each other in both the time and frequency domains.
