This study evaluated uranium sequestration performance in iron-rich (30 g/kg) sediment via bioreduction followed by *** tests (1383 days) at Oak Ridge,Tennessee demonstrated that uranium contents in sediments increased after bioreduced sediments were re-exposed to nitrate and oxygen in contaminated *** of contaminated sediments (1200 mg/kg U) with ethanol in microcosm reduced aqueous U from 0.37 to 0.023 mg/*** of the bioreduced sediment were reoxidized with O2,H2O2,and NaNO3,respectively,over 285 days,resulting in aqueous U of 0.024,1.58 and 14.4 mg/L at pH 6.30,6.63 and 7.62,*** source-and the three reoxidized sediments showed different desorption and adsorption behaviors of U,but all fit a Freundlich *** adsorption capacities increased sharply at pH 4.5 to 5.5,plateaued at pH 5.5 to 7.0,then decreased sharply as pH increased from 7.0 to *** O2-reoxidized sediment retained a lower desorption efficiency at pH over *** NO3--reoxidized sediment exhibited higher adsorption capacity at pH 5.5 to *** pH-dependent adsorption onto Fe(Ⅲ) oxides and formation of U coated particles and precipitates resulted in U sequestration,and bioreduction followed by reoxidation can enhance the U sequestration in sediment.

Neurodegenerative disorders affect more than 30 million individuals throughout the world and lead to significant disability as well as death. These statistics will increase almost exponentially as the lifespan and age of individuals increase globally and individuals become more susceptible to acute disorders such as stroke as well as chronic diseases that involve cognitive loss, Alzheimer＇s disease, and Parkinson＇s disease. Current therapies for such disorders are effective only for a small subset of individuals or provide symptomatic relief but do not alter disease progression. One exciting therapeutic approach that may turn the tide for addressing neurodegenerative disorders involves the mammalian target of rapamycin （mTOR）. mTOR is a component of the protein complexes roTOR Complex 1 （mTORC1） and mTOR Complex 2 （mTORC2） that are ubiquitous throughout the body and control multiple functions such as gene transcription, metabolism, cell survival, and cell senescence, roTOR through its relationship with phosphoinositide 3-kinas e （PI 3-K） and protein kinase b （Akt） and multiple downstream signaling pathways such as p70 ribosomal $6 kinase （p70S6K） and proline rich Akt substrate 40 kDa （PRAS40） promotes neuro- nal cell regeneration through stem cell renewal and oversees critical pathways such as apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis to foster protection against neurodegenerative disorders. Targeting by mTOR of specific pathways that drive long-term potentiation, synaptic plasticity, and [3-amyl old toxicity may offer new strategies for disorders such as stroke and Alzheimer＇s disease. Overall, mTOR is an essential neuroprotective pathway but must be carefully targeted to maximize clini- cal efficacy and eliminate any clinical toxic side effects.

αt-Adrenergic receptors (AR) play an important role in the regulation of physiological responses mediated by norepinephrine and epinephrine, particularly in the cardiovascular system. The three cloned oc,-AR subtypes (α1Aα1band α1D) are G protein-coupled receptors that signal through the Gq/11signaling pathway, each showing distinct pharmacological properties and tissue distributions. However, due to the lack of highly subtype-selective drugs, the functional roles of individual subtypes are still not clear. Development of new subtype-specific drugs will greatly facilitate the identification of the functions of each subtype. Conopeptide TIA has been found to be a new α1b-AR selective antagonist with different modes of inhibition at α1-AR subtypes. In addition, recent studies using genetically engineered mice have shed some light on α1AR functions in vivo, especially in the cardiovascular system and brain. Several proteins have been shown to interact directly with particular α1-AR, and may be important in regulating receptor function. Receptor heterodimerization has been shown to be important for cell surface expression, signaling and internalization. These new observations are likely to help elucidate the functional roles of individual a,-AR subtypes.

To the Editor： Hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） remains one of the commonest cancers worldwide especially in hepatitis b endemic regions. Its aggressive behavior is characterised by the natural history of increasing size, a tendency for vascular invasion into the hepatic veins and portal veins. Further growth into the inferior vena cava （IVC） and right atrium （RA） is an infrequent finding but signifies a pre-terminal event with a dismal prognosis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine usefulness of antibiotic bone cement and UV light in primary Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Patients and Methods: between 1986 and 2008, 3105 TKAs were performed using 750 mg of cefuroxime per bag of cement (Group 1), 7537 using cefuroxime and UV light (Group 2), and 4573 using UV light and gentamicin premixed (Group 3). Results: The primary infection rate was 0.57% (87 acute postoperative infections). Of these, 27 (0.9%) were in Group 1, 44 (0.6%) were in Group 2, and 16 (0.35%) were in Group 3 (p = 0.0013). Kaplan-Meier survival in Groups 1 - 3 for reoperation for aseptic loosening of any component at 5 years was 0.9908, 0.9927, and 0.9959, respectively (p = 0.1315). Conclusion: Despite potential concerns mentioned in the literature, these results continue to support the use of antibiotic bone cement and UV lights during TKA.

Proton-pump inhibitors （PPIs） are among the most widely used drugs worldwide. PPI use has recently been linked to adverse changes in semen quality in healthy men; however, the effects of PPI use on semen parameters remain largely unknown specifically in cases with male factor infertility. We examined whether PPI use was associated with detrimental effects on semen parameters in a large population of subfertile men. We retrospectively reviewed data from 12 257 subfertile men who had visited our fertility clinic from 2003 to 2013. Patients who reported using any PPIs for 〉3 months before semen sample collection were included; 7698 subfertile men taking no medication served as controls. Data were gathered on patient age, medication use, and conventional semen parameters; patients taking any known spermatotoxic medication were excluded. Linear mixed-effect regression models were used to test the effect of PPI use on semen parameters adjusting for age. A total of 248 patients （258 samples） used PPIs for at least 3 months before semen collection. In regression models, PPI use （either as the only medication or when used in combination with other nonspermatotoxic medications） was not associated with statistically significant changes in semen parameters. To our knowledge, this is the largest study to compare PPI use with semen parameters in subfertile men. Using PPIs was not associated with detrimental effects on semen quality in this retrospective study.

bACKGROUND:Controversy remains over whether the middle hepatic vein should be included in the liver graft in right liver living donor liver *** in the anterior sector of a right liver graft can cause graft malfunction,which is especially devastating in the case of a graft with marginal size in relation to recipient body size on top of poor pre-transplant recipient *** case we report here highlighted the importance of the middle hepatic vein in right liver living donor liver ***:We illustrated the rectification of outflow obstruction of the middle hepatic vein in the anterior sector of right liver graft caused by technical error during *** rectification was performed with emergency re-routing using an artificial ***:Congestion in the anterior sector of the graft improved immediately and the patient’s postoperative liver function test results improved ***:The middle hepatic vein is important for effective drainage of the anterior sector of a right liver *** re-routing technique described in the report can also be applied to cases in which the middle hepatic vein is injured during hepatectomy requiring immediate reconstruction.
