Rectal angiolipoma diagnosed after surgical resection: A case report

Angiolipoma is a common benign tumor with a char- acteristic vascular component that usually occurs in subcutaneous tissue. Although lipomas are frequently encountered at colonoscopy as submucosal tumors, an- giolipomas are rarely found in the gastrointestinal tract including the large intestine. Here we report a 77-year old Japanese man who underwent transanal resection of a tumor that was diagnosed tentatively as a leiomyoma. Histologically, the tumor consisted of mature fat cells and blood vessels. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were negative for c-kit and HMB-45, which are consis- tently expressed in tumors such as gastrointestinal stro- mal tumor and angiomyolipoma. The tumor was there- fore diagnosed as an angiolipoma. This is thought to be the first case report of a surgically resected angiolipoma of the rectum.

DSA(dynamic strain aging)phenomenon in SUS316 steel was investigated using isothermal and non-isothermal tensile tests of simulated HAZ(heat-affected zone)thermal *** tensile tests were performed on SUS316 in the peak temperature range of 20-700°C,with strain rates varying from 4.2×10^(-3)to 4.2×10^(-5)s^(-1).Based on the appearance of discontinuous plastic flows,expressed as serrations,and the hardening phenomenon of the tensile samples,the conditions for the occurrence of DSA in the SUS316 steel were ***,the extent of hardening due to DSA was evaluated by comparing the hardness values of the SUS316 and SUS316EHP steels after the tensile *** confirm the effect of DSA on hardness in the HAZ of the welded SUS316 steel,non-isothermal tensile tests of the simulated HAZ thermal cycles were performed using a Thermec *** relationship between the increase in Vickers hardness due to DSA and the strain in the HAZ was determined;the effect of DSA on hardness in the HAZ could be *** DSA in SUS316 steel was found to be mainly attributed to the dynamic interaction of dislocations with C and N interstitial atoms during high-temperature deformation.

Adenocarcinoma arising from heterotopic pancreas at the third portion of the duodenum

A 62-year-old Japanese man presented to our hospital with a history of weight loss of 6 kg in 4 mo. Imaging examinations revealed a tumor located on the third portion of the duodenum with stenosis. We suspected duodenal carcinoma and performed pancreas-preserving segmental duodenectomy. Adenocarcinoma arising from a heterotopic pancreas at the third portion of the duodenum was finally diagnosed by immunohistochemical staining. Malignant transformation in the duodenum arising from a heterotopic pancreas is extremely rare; to our knowledge, only 13 cases have been reported worldwide, including the present case. The most common location of malignancy is the proximal duodenum at the first and descending portion. Herein, we describe the first case of adenocarcinoma arising from a heterotopic pancreas, which was located in the third portion of the duodenum, with a review of the literature.

A Feasible Approach for Automatic Detection and Recognition of the Bengalese Finch Songnotes and Their Sequences

The Bengalese finch song has been widely studied for its unique features and similarity to human language. For com-putational analysis the songs must be represented in songnote sequences. An automated approach for this purpose is highly desired since manual processing makes human annotation cumbersome, and human annotation is very heu-ristic and easily lacks objectivity. In this paper, we propose a new approach for automatic detection and recognition of the songnote sequences via image processing. The proposed method is based on human recognition process to visually identify the patterns in a sonogram image. The songnotes of the Bengalese finch are dependent on the birds and similar pattern does not exist in two different birds. Considering this constraint, our experiments on real birdsong data of different Bengalese finch show high accuracy rates for automatic detection and recognition of the songnotes. These results indicate that the proposed approach is feasible and generalized for any Bengalese finch songs.

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing cancer has been reported to occur in various organs. It has an aggressive nature and shows resistance to conventional treatments, however, its clinical features are not well known because of the small number or reported cases. We report G-CSF-producing squamous cell carcinoma arising in malignant-transformed ovarian mature cystic teratoma. An 80-year-old woman underwent suboptimal surgical excision of stage IIIC ovarian cancer. Prior to the treatment, the patient presented severe granulocytosis and elevated serum G-CSF concentration. With the help of histopathological and immunohistochemical studies, we diagnosed this case to be a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma developed in ovarian mature cystic teratoma, which highly expressed G-CSF. During radiation therapy, the patient died from rapid growth of residual tumor and peritoneal dissemination 2 months after surgery. This is the first case of G-CSF-producing squamous cell carcinoma arising in malignant-transformed ovarian mature cystic teratoma, and its prognosis was very poor.

已广泛用作路基和土木工程的基料。然而当用作基料时,由于水化作用,钢渣会发生膨胀现象,从而导致道路表面产生裂缝。而钢渣中的游离氧化镁和游离氧化钙是造成这种膨胀的主要原因,因此有必要测量出钢渣中的游离氧化镁的含量,从而达到可以准确评估钢渣膨胀性的目的。在化学萃取法和热重分析法的基础上,开发了一种能够准确测定钢渣中游离氧化镁含量的方法。该方法首先将钢渣中的游离氧化镁和氢氧化镁(Mg(OH)2)加热后溶解在含破和乙醇的乙二醇溶液中,然后用电感耦合等离子体原子发射光谱法(ICP—AES)测定出溶液中镁的总含量,用热重法测定出溶液中Mg(OH)2的含量,最后从镁的总含量减去Mg(OH)2的含量即为游离MgO的含量。

Effects of cola intake on fertility: a review

The consumption of soft drinks has increased considerably during the last decades. Among them, the cola-based preparations are possibly the refreshments with the largest sales worldwide. During the previous years, important concerns have been raised about the effects of colas on human health. In this review, we introduce the cola effects on reproduction including pregnancy miscarriages, ovulatory and menstrual disorders, and reduced semen quality. Although caffeine intoxication may be thought to play the most important role, a component of cola other than caffeine, or in combination with caffeine, may be associated with increased risk of reproductive hazards in heavy cola (> 1 L per day)-consumers. Cola discontinuation usually leads to an uneventful recovery in the most cases suggesting justification of limitations in the maximum recommended daily dose of these soft drinks. Cola is not an essential beverage, and abstaining from drinking more than 1 L per day is a minor intrusion in one’s personal life. Despite these uncertainties, this growing know- ledge may alarm the fertility risk of chronic cola intake in peoples of childbearing age.

Association between high cystatin C levels and carotid atherosclerosis

AIM To investigate the association between carotid atherosclerosis and cystatin C(CysC) and to determine the optimal CysC cut-off *** One hundred twenty-eight subjects were included in this study. Atherosclerosis was defined as a maximum carotid plaque thickness(MCPT) of greater than 2 mm. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the diagnostic value of serum CysC for atherosclerosis. The subjects were divided into two groups according to the CysC cut-off value. We screenedfor diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and exercise behavior. The association between atherosclerosis and CysC levels was assessed using multivariate *** The subjects were then divided into two groups according to the CysC cut-off value(0.73 mg/L). The median age of the high CysC group was 72 years(85% males), whereas that of the low CysC group was 61 years(63% males). The CysC levels were significantly correlated with Cr and estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR) values. Bodymass index, visceral fat area, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and MCPT were significantly higher in the high CysC group than in the low CysC group. Furthermore, the eG FR was significantly lower in the high CysC group. Regarding lifestyle habits, only the exercise level was lower in the high CysC group than in the low CysC group. Multivariate analysis, adjusted for age and sex, revealed that high CysC levels were significantly associated with an MCPT of ≥ 2 mm(odds ratio: 2.92; 95%CI: 1.13-7.99).CONCLUSION Higher CysC levels were associated with an MCPT of ≥ 2 mm. The CysC cut-off value of 0.73 mg/L appears to aid in the diagnosis of atherosclerosis.

Salivary secretion impairment after preoperative irradiation and surgery in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

Purpose: This study was designed to determine the influence of preoperative irradiation and surgical operation on salivary secretion impairment in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)。Methods: A total of 42 patients with OSCC were studied between 2004 and 2008。Salivary secretion was evaluated by Saxson's test before and 3-4 weeks after preoperative 30 Gy of irradiation, and at various intervals after surgery。Results: After preoperative irradiation, salivary secretion was 40.8% compared with pretreatment salivary secretion, then 27.8% 6 months after surgery。In several patients whose data we can get by Saxson's test more than 6 months after surgery, salivary secretion markedly increased between 12 and 24 months after surgery。Conclusions: In-patient with OSCC received preoperative irradiation and surgery, salivary secretion was about 30% 6 months after operation, then likely to recover significantly between 12 and 24 months after surgery。
