Laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection versus open retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testicular cancer:A comparison of clinical and perioperative outcomes

Objective:This study was performed to evaluate the clinical and perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection(L-RPLND)and open retroperitoneal lymph node dissection(O-RPLND)performed by one surgeon at a single ***:We evaluated 30 patients with stage IIA germ cell tumors who underwent retroperitoneal lymph node dissection(15 underwent L-RPLND and 15 underwent O-RPLND)at our institution between April 1,2010 and March 31,*** clinical parameters were compared between patients who underwent L-RPLND using the retroperitoneal approach and those who underwent O-RPLND using the transperitoneal *** were no significant differences in the background characteristics of the two groups except for the median follow-up duration(46 months for L-RPLND and 71 months for O-RPLND,p=0.02).Results:L-RPLND was associated with a shorter mean operative time(mean 222 min for L-RPLND vs.453 min for O-RPLND,p<0.001).There was significantly less blood loss during surgery in the L-RPLND group compared to the O-RPLND group(mean 165 mL for L-RPLND vs.403 mL for O-RPLND,p<0.001).Parameters related to postoperative recovery were significantly better for the L-RPLND group than for the O-RPLND *** were no differences in the histopathological characteristics between the two *** patients in either group exhibited disease ***:Patients who underwent L-RPLND had more rapid recovery,and shorter hospital stay compared to those who underwent O-RPLND;complications were comparable between the two groups.L-RPLND is an efficient procedure with the benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

Effect of Signal Filtering on Image Quality of Projection-Based Magnetic Particle Imaging

Purpose: Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) allows for imaging of the spatial distribution of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in positive contrast, with high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, and high imaging speed. It is necessary to increase the signal-to-noise ratio to enhance the reliability of MPI. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of signal filtering on the image quality and quantitativity in projection-based MPI using phantoms. Materials and Methods: We fabricated two kinds of phantom (cylindrical tube phantom with a diameter of 6 mm and A-shaped phantom) and evaluated the effect of signal filtering in terms of root-mean-square (RMS) granularity and the correlation coefficient between iron concentrations of MNPs and average MPI values for four filter modes (THRU, BPF, BEF, and LPF). In the THRU mode, the signal input was output without passing through the filter. In the BPF mode, only the third-harmonic signal was passed using a band-pass filter (central frequency: 1200 Hz, band width: 1/3 octave). In the BEF mode, the first-harmonic signal was eliminated using a band-elimination filter (central frequency: 400 Hz, band width: 1/3 octave). In the LPF mode, only the signal with a frequency less than the third-harmonic frequency was passed using a low-pass filter (cut-off frequency: 1200 Hz, -24 ± 2 dB/octave). The RMS granularity was obtained by calculating standard deviations of the pixel values in the MPI image without MNPs, whereas average MPI values were obtained by drawing a circular region of interest with a diameter of 6 mm on the MPI image of the cylindrical tube phantom. Results: When using the filtered back-projection (FBP) method with a ramp filter for image reconstruction, the RMS granularity and correlation coefficient decreased in the order of THRU, BPF, BEF, and LPF. Occurrence and Bioaccumulation of Micropollutants in Black Cicada

Seven organophosphoric acid triesters （OPEs） and eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in black cicadas were measured to determine the concentration levels and to investigate how the cicadas are affected by soil contamination. Adult cicadas, nymphal exoskeletons, and soils were sampled in Higashi Osaka, Japan. Four OPEs and six PAHs were detected in the adult cicadas. The total concentrations of OPEs and PAHs ranged from 27.2 ng/g to 824 ng/g and from 4.30 ng/g to 270 ng/g, respectively. Four OPEs and five PAHs were detected in the nymphal exoskeletons. The total concentrations of OPEs and PAHs ranged from 184 ng/g to 1830 ng/g and from 40.3 ng/g to 970 ng/g, respectively. In the soils, three OPEs and six PAHs were detected at the same concentration levels as those detected in the adult cicadas. Significant correlations were observed in the micropollutant concentrations between soils and adult cicadas, and between soils and nymphal exoskeletons. This trend indicates that black cicadas accumulate OPEs and PAHs from contaminated soils.

Lock-in-Amplifier Model for Analyzing the Behavior of Signal Harmonics in Magnetic Particle Imaging

The purpose of this study was to present a lock-in-amplifier model for analyzing the behavior of signal harmonics in magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and some simulation results based on this model. In the lock-in-amplifier model, the signal induced by magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a receiving coil was multiplied with a reference signal, and was then fed through a low-pass filter to extract the DC component of the signal (output signal). The MPI signal was defined as the mean of the absolute value of the output signal. The magnetization and particle size distribution of MNPs were assumed to obey the Langevin theory of paramagnetism and a log-normal distribution, respectively, and the strength of the selection magnetic field (SMF) in MPI was assumed to be given by the product of the gradient strength of the SMF and the distance from the field-free region (x). In addition, Gaussian noise was added to the signal induced by MNPs using normally-distributed random numbers. The relationships between the MPI signal and x were calculated for the odd- and even-numbered harmonics and were investigated for various time constants of the low-pass filter used in the lock-in amplifier and particle sizes and their distributions of MNPs. We found that the behavior of the MPI signal largely depended on the time constant of the low-pass filter and the particle size of MNPs. This lock-in-amplifier model will be useful for better understanding, optimizing, and developing MPI, and for designing MNPs appropriate for MPI.

Novel zinc alloys for biodegradable surgical staples

BACKGROUND The development of biodegradable surgical staples is desirable as non-biodegradable Ti alloy staples reside in the human body long after wound healing, which can cause allergic/foreign-body reactions, adhesion, or other adverse effects. In order to develop a biodegradable alloy suitable for the fabrication of surgical staples, we hypothesized that Zn, a known biodegradable metal, could be alloyed with various elements to improve the mechanical properties while retaining biodegradability and biocompatibility. Considering their biocompatibility, Mg, Ca, Mn, and Cu were selected as candidate alloying elements, alongside Ti, the main material of clinically available surgical *** To investigate the in vitro mechanical properties and degradation behavior and in vivo safety and feasibility of biodegradable Zn alloy *** Tensile and bending tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of binary Zn alloys with 0.1–6 wt.% Mg, Ca, Mn, Cu, or Ti. Based on the results,three promising Zn alloy compositions were devised for staple applications(wt.%): Zn-1.0Cu-0.2Mn-0.1Ti(Zn alloy 1), Zn-1.0Mn-0.1Ti(Zn alloy 2), and Zn-1.0Cu-0.1Ti(Zn alloy 3). Immersion tests were performed at 37℃ for 4 wk using fed-state simulated intestinal fluid(Fe SSIF) and Hank’s balanced salt solution(HBSS). The corrosion rate was estimated from the weight loss of staples during immersion. Nine rabbits were subjected to gastric resection using each Zn alloy staple, and a clinically available Ti staple was used for another group of nine rabbits. Three in each group were sacrificed at 1, 4, and 12 wk *** Additions of ≤1 wt.% Mn or Cu and 0.1 wt.% Ti improved the yield strength without excessive deterioration of elongation or bendability. Immersion tests revealed no gas evolution or staple fracture in any of the Zn alloy staples. An asymptotic existence of balanced incomplete block (BIB) designs and pairwise balanced designs (PBD) has been discussed in [1]-[3]. On the other hand, the existence of additive BIB designs and pairwise additive BIB designs with k = 2?and?λ = 1?has been discussed with direct and recursive constructions in [4]-[8]. In this paper, an asymptotic existence of pairwise additive BIB designs is proved by use of Wilson’s theorem on PBD, and?also for some l?and k the exact existence of l?pairwise additive BIB designs with block size k and?λ = 1?is discussed.

Subclinical synovitis detected by magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography following clinical remission in patients with rheumatoid arthritis:A retrospective study

We investigated movement pattern of commercial important fish around Offshore Wind Turbine(OWT)and neighboring habitats in Goto *** tagged 55 individuals of 2 fish species and released around the OWT in 2017.(27 Pagrus major from 1st Feb 2017 to 16th Mar 2017(winter),8 *** and 20 Seriola quinqueradiata from 13th July 2017 to 13th Oct 2017(summer)).Acoustic receivers were deployed at OWT,south artificial reef(AS),trapnet(TN),north FAD(F1)and south FAD(F2)in winter and two more receivers were deployed at north artificial reef(AN)and natural reef(NR)in *** observed 12 *** at OWT for a day after released in winter,majority of fish(13 individuals)were detected at *** summer,7 *** were observed at OWT,1 visited TN within the day,but others *** *** stayed at OWT longer than *** after released and disappeared within 2 *** mostly moved around AS,AN,*** time from K-M curve was 10 days for *** in winter,a day in summer and 3 days for *** species showed low affinity for OWT as recorded low residency index despite the season.

Middle Molecular Weight Heparinyl Amino Acid Derivatives (MHADs) Function as Indirect Radical Scavengers in Vitro

We conducted the novel synthesis of middle molecular weight heparinyl amino acid derivatives (MHADs) to reduce the adverse effect of heparin (HE) based on its anticoagulant activity. Subsequently, we investigated the radical scavenging effects of 12 kinds of MHAD on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUV-ECs) damaged by oxygen free radicals using xanthine and xanthine oxidase in vitro. As a result, middle molecular weight heparinyl phenylalanine, middle molecular weight heparinyl leucine, and middle molecular weight heparinyl tyrosine showed significant protective effects on HUV-ECs. In conclusion, these three HE derivatives might be candidates for therapeutic agents to treat diseases attributed to peroxidation.
