milk Replacer Acidification for Free-Access Feeding: Effects on the Performance and Health of Veal Calves

Objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of milk replacer (mR) acidification for free- access feeding on pre- and post-weaning performance, morbidity and mortality of calves. Calves were randomly assigned to free-access feeding of acidified (ACID, n = 31) or non-acidified (NON, n = 31) mR, and weaned at 42 days. ACIDmR was prepared to pH 4.0 - 4.5 using formic acid. Intakes were measured daily and weights weekly. Samples of ACID and NON mR were analyzed for coliform and aerobic bacterial growth. After weaning, calves transitioned to a grain-fed veal diet, weighed every 2 weeks. At slaughter (approximately 6 months of age), lungs were evaluated for gross pathological changes and dressed carcass weights were obtained. Generalized linear mixed models were constructed to examine the effects of mR acidification. Differences by treatment group for pre- and post-weaning morbidity and mortality were tested using Pearson’s χ2 and Fisher’s exact tests. ACID calves consumed less mR than NON (10.6 vs. 11.7 L/d, P = 0.02). Acidification tended to promote earlier onset of starter ration consumption (32.0 vs. 39.5 d, hazard ratio = 1.5, P = 0.07), but did not affect average daily starter ration or water intakes across the pre-weaning period. ACID and NON calves did not differ for BW at weaning, pre- or post-weaning ADG or dressed carcass weight. ACID mR had less coliform (P mR, but odds of disease treatment and mortality did not differ. ACID calves tended to have lower odds of pulmonary lesions during post-mortem inspection than NON calves (OR = 0.3, P = 0.07). These results indicate that under free-access feeding conditions, acidification limited bacterial growth and mR intake, but there were no long-term impacts of acidification on calf performance or health. In conclusion, acidification to pH 4.0 - 4.5 will significantly reduce bacterial growth in milk fed to calves.

Ecologic study of serum selenium and upper gastrointestinal cancers in Iran

AIm: Both observational and experimental studies have shown that higher selenium status reduces the risk of upper gastrointestinal cancers in selenium deficient *** cancer registry data have shown very different rates of esophageal cancer (EC) and gastric cancer (GC) in four Provinces of Iran, namely Ardabil, mazandaran, Golestan,and Kerman. The aim of this study was to have a preliminary assessment of the hypothesis that high rates of EC in Golestan and high rates of GC in Ardabil may be partly attributable to selenium ***: We measured serum selenium in 300 healthy adults from ArdabU (n = 100), mazandaran (n = 50), Golestan (n = 100), and Kerman (n = 50), using inductively coupled plasma, with dynamic reaction cell, mass spectrometry (ICP-DRC-mS) at the US Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta,Georgia).RESULTS: The median serum selenium concentrations were very different in the four Provinces. The medians (IQR) for selenium in Ardabil, mazandarn, Golestan, and Kerman were 82 (75-94), 123 (111-132), 155 (141-173), and 119 (110-128) μg/L, respectively (Pm (r^2 = 0.76).The proportion of the populations with a serum selenium more than 90μg/L (the concentration at which serum selenoproteins are saturated) was 100% in Golestan,Kerman, and mazandaran but only 29% in ***: Our findings suggest nat selenium defidency is not a major contributor to the high incidence of EC seen in northeastern Iran, but it may play a role in the high incidence of GC in Ardabil Province.

TGF-betas are pleiotropic growth factors with important roles in normal homeostasis and complex roles in tumorigenesis. In general TGF-betas function as tumor suppressors early in the tumorigenic process and as pro-metastatic factors later. metastasis-promoting activities include the enhancement of invasion and migration, the promotion of angiogenesis, and the suppression of immune surveillance. Overexpression of TGF-beta in many advanced human tumors correlates with metastasis and poor prognosis, and there is considerable interest in developing TGF-beta antagonists for cancer therapy. However, the complexity of TGF-beta action, involving the context-dependent interplay of many cellular targets, means that preclinical animal models are critical for evaluating such agents.

本文介绍了Bárány协会分类监督委员会(COCS)对颈性头晕(有时也称为颈性眩晕)的观点。这些内容首先由多个领域的专家进行了初步审查,之后由Bárány协会COCS进行进一步审定。基于当前已发表的文献,Bárány协会COCS认为,自身运动的错觉(眩晕-旋转感或其他)与颈部病理和(或)颈部疼痛症状(通过影响颈椎、软组织结构或颈神经根)之间机制的关联尚缺乏证据支持。当头颈部联合运动诱发出现旋转的错觉时,其原因可能是尚未确诊的常见前庭疾病(如偏头痛或BPPV),也可能是较少见的中枢性前庭疾病(包括急性起病的危急状况,例如椎动脉夹层伴后循环卒中以及极其罕见的椎动脉压迫综合征)。同时,COCS指出,迄今为止,偏头痛(包括前庭性偏头痛)为颈部疼痛和前庭症状同时出现的最常见原因。而且,在几乎所有前庭疾病中,头部运动常会导致患者症状的加重,推测在这些前庭疾病患者中常见颈部肌肉紧张度的增加(因果关系尚不清楚)可能与头部运动减少有关。此外,还存在一些尚未探索的理论机制问题,如颈部疼痛可能促发血管迷走反射、心脏抑制反射继而通过晕厥前机制导致短暂的定向障碍和(或)失衡。COCS提出还有一些少见的案例,如那些颈部肌肉痉挛伴模糊的空间定向障碍和(或)失衡感的患者是否确实存在颈部本体感觉受损机制,值得进一步深入研究。展望未来,通过严格纳入和排除标准,以减少敏感性而增加特异性的方法进行研究对象的选择,进一步采用双盲、安慰剂对照的研究方案将更为理想。为进一步促进“颈性头晕/眩晕”的研究,在进行设计机制和治疗的对照研究时,亦应考虑到那些重要的混杂因素相关问题。基于此,目前的Bárány COCS并未提出用于研究之外的临床初步诊断标准。相信随着新的研究证据的不断积累,这一观点将可能会发生改变。

Rectal bleeding in adults over 20 years: Endoscopic investigations and results in current hospital practices in Yaoundé, Cameroon

Introduction: In order to identify the modes of investigation and the results of the assessment of rectal bleeding in the Cameroonian adult, we retrospectively analysed the records of 287 patients aged above 20 years diagnosed with rectal bleeding with the aim to know the prescription patterns according to age, the diagnostic performance of tests and the results. methodology: Between the 1st of January 2009 and the 30th of June 2010, we examined patients at the University Teaching Hospital and the “La Cathédrale” medical Centre in Yaounde. Age, sex, endoscopic tests and results were evaluated. Results: 287 protocols met our selection criteria, sex ratio (m/F) 2.4/1, median age 46 years interquartile range [36, 55]. Normal tests were 57 (19.2%). main lesions: haemorrhoids (42.4% CI95 36.7 -48.3), colorectal cancer (10.8% CI95 7.5 -14.9), anal fissure (8.8% CI95 5.8 -12.6) and colorectal polyps (8.4% CI95 5.5 -12.2). The prevalence of significant lesions (polyps and cancer) recorded 7% for those under age 40. 20.5% in those were between 40?-50 years, and 28.9% for those over 50 years. For anoscopies, 44.4% were under 40 years, 39.3% of cases of sigmoidoscopy affected those between 40 -50 years and colonoscopy affected 54% of those over 50 years. For the diagnostic yield, 26.2% had a significant lesion for flexible sigmoidoscopy and only 16.7% and 1.6% for colonoscopy and anoscopy respectively. Conclusion: The study shows that anoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are the main initial tests conducted in Cameroon in the assessment of rectal bleeding in adults of less than 50 years and they are quite sufficient. Haemorrhoids and colorectal cancer are the main pathologies.
