Bird habitat preferences drive hemoparasite infection in the Neotropical region

The role that the environment plays in vector-borne parasite infection is one of the central factors for understanding disease *** assessed how Neotropical bird foraging strata and habitat preferences determine infection by parasites of the genera Haemoproteus,Plasmodium,Leucocytozoon,and Trypanosoma and filarioids,and tested for phylogenetic signal in these host-parasite *** performed extensive searches of the scientific literature and created a database of hemoparasite *** collected data on host body mass,foraging strata,habitat preference,and migratory status,and tested if host ecological traits predict each hemoparasite occurrence and prevalence using a phylogenetic Bayesian *** of Plasmodium tend to infect birds from tropical forests while birds from altitudinal environments are likely to be infected by species of *** probability of a bird being infected by filarioid or Trypanosoma is higher in lowland *** species that occur in anthropic environments and dry habitats of tropical latitudes are more susceptible to infection by species of *** foraging strata is also influential and bird species that forage in the mid-high and canopy strata are more prone to infection by species of Haemoproteus and *** also identified phylogenetic signal for host-parasite associations with the probability of infection of Neotropical birds by any hemoparasite being more similar among more closely related *** provided a useful framework to identify environments that correlate with hemoparasite infection,which is also helpful for detecting areas with potential suitability for hemoparasite infection due to land conversion and climate change.

Interactions among living beings are the structuring basis of ecosystems,and studies of networks allow us to identify the patterns and consistency of such *** networks reflect the energy flow of communities,and identifying network structure and the biological aspects that influence its stability is crucial to understanding ecosystem *** used antagonistic anuran interactions-predator-prey and host-parasite-to assess structural patterns and to identify the key anuran species structuring these *** tested whether anuran body-size and life-habit are related to their roles in these *** collected individuals of 9 species of anurans from an area of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and identified their prey and helminth *** used network(modularity,specialization,and nestedness)and centrality metrics(degree,closeness,and betweenness)to identify the role of anuran species in both *** then evaluated whether anuran body-size or life-habit were related to anuran centrality using generalized linear mixed *** networks formed specialized interactions in compartments composed by key species from different *** our networks,anurans with rheophilic and cryptozoic habit are central in predator-prey networks,and those with larger body size and arboreal and cryptozoic habit in the host-parasite *** study represents a step towards a better understanding of the influential factors that affect the structure of anuran antagonist networks,as well as to recognize the functioning roles of anuran species.

Tribological performance of uncoated and TiCN-coated D2,M2 and M4 steels under lubricated condition

Biocomposite Films of Polylactic Acid Reinforced with Microcrystalline Cellulose from Pineapple Leaf Fibers

Poly(lactic acid)(PLA)composite films reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose(MCC)extracted from pineapple leaf fibers(PALF)were prepared by a solution casting *** an attempt to improve the interaction between PLA and cellulose,two approaches were adopted;first,poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG)was used as a surfactant,and second,the cellulosic fibers were pre-treated using tert-butanol(TBA).Lignocellulosic and cellulosic substrates were characterized using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR),wide-angle X-ray scattering(WAXS),and thermogravimetrical analysis(TGA).MCC from PALF showed good thermal stability,left few residues after decomposing,and exhibited high crystallinity ***,thermal and thermomechanical properties of the PLA composites were also *** PLA endotherms were observed in composites with TBA-treated MCC due to crystal nucleation *** ultimate tensile strain values for all composites were lower than that of the pristine ***,4 wt.%MCC content provided balanced engineering properties in terms of static and dynamic tensile properties.

Isolation and Characterization of Nanocellulose obtained from Industrial Crop Waste Resources by Using Mild Acid Hydrolysis

Cellulose,microcrystalline cellulose and nanocellulose were prepared from three agricultural waste resources:pineapple leaf(PALF),banana rachis(BR),and sugarcane bagasse(SCB).Each waste resource was first converted into microcrystalline cellulose which was subsequently converted into cellulose nanoparticles by using mild(30%w/v)and strong(60%w/v)sulfuric acid concentrations for *** transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)were used to characterize each waste resource and extracted cellulosic ***,nanocelluloses were studied by zeta potential,size analysis,and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Cellulose nanowhiskers were successfully obtained and isolated with a 33%average yield by applying a mild acid *** BR and SCB proved to be more promising agricultural waste resources in terms of their crystalline cellulosic content and properties.

Challenges to the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in developing countries

This critical review of the literature assembles and compares available data on breast cancer clinical stage, time intervals to care, and access barriers in different countries. It provides evidence that while more than 70% of breast cancer patients in most high-income countries are diagnosed in stages Ⅰ and Ⅱ, only 20%-50% patients in the majority of low- and middleincome countries are diagnosed in these earlier stages. Most studies in the developed world show an association between an advanced clinical stage of breast cancer and delays greater than three months between symptom discovery and treatment start. The evidence assembled in this review shows that the median of this interval is 30-48 d in high-income countries but 3-8 mo in low- and middle-income countries. The longest delays occur between the first medical consultation and the beginning of treatment, known as the provider interval. The little available evidence suggests that access barriers and quality deficiencies in cancer care are determinants of provider delay in low- and middle-income countries. Research on specific access barriers and deficiencies in quality of care for the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is practically non-existentin these countries, where it is the most needed for the design of cost-effective public policies that strengthen health systems to tackle this expensive and deadly disease.

Applying multi-criteria analysis to select the most appropriate broiler rearing environment

Survival and comorbidities in lung cancer patients:Evidence from administrative claims data in Germany

Lung cancer is the most common cancer type worldwide and has the highest and second highest mortality rate for men and women respectively in ***,the role of comorbid illnesses in lung cancer patient prognosis is still *** analyzed administrative claims data from one of the largest statutory health insurance(SHI)funds in Germany,covering close to 9 million people(11%of the national population);observation period was from 2005 to *** cancer patients and their concomitant diseases were identified by ICD-10-GM *** were classified according to the Charlson Comorbidity Index(CCI).Incidence,comorbidity prevalence and survival are estimated considering sex,age at diagnosis,and place of *** Meier curves with 95%confidence intervals were built in relation to common *** identified 70,698 lung cancer incident cases in the *** and survival figures are comparable to official statistics in *** prevalent comorbidities are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(CoPD)(36.7%),followed by peripheral vascular disease(PVD)(18.7%),diabetes without chronic complications(17.4%),congestive heart failure(CHF)(16.5%)and renal disease(14.7%).Relative to overall survival,lung cancer patients with CHF,cerebrovascular disease(CEVD)and renal disease are associated with largest drops in survival probabilities(9%or higher),while those with PVD and diabetes without chronic complications with moderate drops(7%or lower).The study showed a negative association between survival and most common comorbidities among lung cancer patients,based on a large sample for *** research needs to explore the individual effect of comorbidities disentangled from that of other patient characteristics such as cancer stage and histology.

Induced pluripotent stem cells throughout the animal kingdom:Availability and applications

Up until the mid 2000s, the capacity to generate every cell of an organism was exclusive to embryonic stem cells. In 2006, researchers Takahashi and Yamanaka developed an alternative method of generating embryonic-like stem cells from adult cells, which they coined induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Such iPSCs possess most of the advantages of embryonic stem cells without the ethical stigma associated with derivation of the latter. The possibility of generating “custom-made” pluripotent cells, ideal for patient-specific disease models, alongside their possible applications in regenerative medicine and reproduction, has drawn a lot of attention to the field with numbers of iPSC studies published growing exponentially. IPSCs have now been generated for a wide variety of species, including but not limited to, mouse, human, primate, wild felines, bovines, equines, birds and rodents, some of which still lack well-established embryonic stem cell lines. The paucity of robust characterization of some of these iPSC lines as well as the residual expression of transgenes involved in the reprogramming process still hampers the use of such cells in species preservation or medical research, underscoring the requirement for further investigations. Here, we provide an extensive overview of iPSC generated from a broad range of animal species including their potential applications and limitations.
