Preserving microbial diversity has become a strategic undertaking. Thus, ex situ microalgal culture conservation results in strategic and functional resource in both biodiversity protection and application domains. Cryopreservation of microalgae has been practiced since the 1960s and is now considered the optimal preservation strategy. Furthermore, the overall monitoring during growth of cultures after freezing/thawing protocols was hardly investigated and there is poor evaluation related to preserve especially the photosystem apparatus. The present study focuses on Stichococcus bacillaris as case study for short-term cryopreservation at −80 °C storage. Various freezing pretreatments using cryoprotective agents, and two thawing methods were compared introducing a novel variable to evaluate viability recovery and assessing growth kinetics of cultures immediately after thawing and after a series batch cultivation. Photosynthetic rate and pigments assessment were proposed to evaluate hidden metabolic cell damage. Results underline cryoprotective agents can increase the kinetic recovery of preserved cells in terms of reduction of lag phase during batch cultivation tests: the use of dimethyl sulfoxide and glycerol granted a growth comparable to unpreserved cells when sudden thawing occurs after 24 hours of storage, but recovery after preservation is less sensitive to cryoprotective agents when gradual thawing and 1 month of storage is considered. However, cells are always able to restore their physiological pathways even without agents, so their kinetic effect has been proved and quantified. Interestingly, both the photosynthetic efficiency and the ratio between total chlorophyll and carotenoids are comparable (0.75 Fv/Fm, 2.2 ± 0.25 g/g) to unpreserved cells and they are unsensitive to chosen agents, but the ratio between chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b was clearly altered (up to 10 times), suggesting that photoactive pigments relative proportions

Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) exercise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise(RE) with BFR on this ***:Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of g 50 min sessions of HD(intradialytic exercise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD ***,RE+BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 *** with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during RE+BFR.

One of the primary goals of launching an ocean color satellite is to obtain over the global ocean synoptic measurements of primary production(PP),a measure of phytoplankton *** reach this ultimate goal,in addition to precise measurements of radiance at the satellite altitude and robust data processing systems,a key requirement is to link primary production with satellitederived products,where a model must be developed and *** many models have been developed in the past decades,the vertically generalized production model(VgPM)developed by Behrenfeld and Falkowski,due to its simplicity and ease of use with satellite products,has been a de facto“standard”for the estimation of PP from ocean color measurements over the past 20+***,it has significantly influenced the ocean color remote sensing and the biological oceanographic *** this article,we discuss the limitations of VgPM(and PP models based on chlorophyll concentration)in estimating primary production.

Adipose-derived stem cells(ASCs) are mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) that are obtained from abundant adipose tissue, adherent on plastic culture flasks, can be expanded in vitro, and have the capacity to differ-entiate into multiple cell lineages. Unlike bone marrow-derived MSCs, ASCs can be obtained from abundant adipose tissue by a minimally invasive procedure, which results in a high number of cells. Therefore, ASCs are promising for regenerating tissues and organs dam-aged by injury and diseases. This article reviews the implications of ASCs in tissue regeneration.

BACKgROUND Enteric-coated medications are supposed to pass intact through the gastric environment and to release the drug content into the small intestine or the *** dissolution of the enteric coating,they may appear hyperdense on computed tomography(CT).Unfortunately,few reports have been published on this topic so *** this case report,the hyperdense appearance on contrastenhanced CT of an enteric-coated mesalamine tablet was initially misinterpreted as a jejunal gastrointestinal stromal tumor(gIST).CASE SUMMARY An asymptomatic 81-year-old male patient,who had undergone laparoscopic right nephrectomy four years earlier for stage 1 renal carcinoma,was diagnosed with a jejunal gIST at the 4-year follow-up thoraco-abdominal CT *** was referred to our hub hospital for gastroenterological evaluation,and subsequently underwent 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography,abdominal magnetic resonance imaging,and video capsule *** of these examinations detected any lesion of the small *** reviewing all the CT images in a multidisciplinary setting,the panel estimated that the hyperdense jejunal image was consistent with a tablet rather than a *** tablet was an 800 mg delayed-release enteric-coated oral mesalamine tablet(Asacol®),which had been prescribed for non-specific colitis,while not informing the hospital *** Delayed-release oral mesalamine(Asacol®),like other enteric-coated medications,can appear as a hyperdense image on a CT scan,mimicking a small intestinal ***,adetailed knowledge of the patients’medications and a multidisciplinary review of the images areessential.
