Electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanofibers had their solution and process parameters optimized using a Box-Behnken design and desirability function. Four factors (applied voltage, flow rate, distance tip-to-plate and amount of chitosan) were varied to produce electrospun mats with a low fiber diameter. An empirical model was developed for each response using response surface methodology (RSM), which revealed that flow rate had no significant influence on the assessed responses. With desirability function, the optimal conditions to produce the nanofibers were applied voltage of 13.1 kV, 30% chitosan concentration and distance tip-to-plate of 10 cm. The fiber diameter and standard deviation were 196.5 ± 28.3 nm, compared to the predicted values of 185.9 ± 26.8 nm. The desirability function allied with Box-Benhken design proved themselves important tools to predict process parameters for the development of nanofibers. The mats were crosslinked with glutaraldehyde for 24 h and 48 h and presented good water stability and enhanced mechanical properties.

Land cover classification is one of the main components of the modern weather research and forecasting models, which can influence the meteorological variable, and in turn the concentration of air pollutants. In this study the impact of using two traditional land use classifications, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), were evaluated. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF, version 3.2.1) was run for the period 18 - 22 August, 2014 (dry season) at a grid spacing of 3 km centered on the city of Manaus. The comparison between simulated and ground-based observed data revealed significant differences in the meteorological fields, for instance, the temperature. Compared to USGS, MODIS classification showed better skill in representing observed temperature for urban areas of Manaus, while the two files showed similar results for nearby areas. The analysis of the files suggests that the better quality of the simulations favorable to the MODIS file is straightly related to its better representation of urban class of land use, which is observed to be not adequately represented by USGS.

This study evaluated the physicochemical and sensory properties of mixed jam elaborated with banana and ara?á-boi. Four banana extract (BE) and ara?á-boi (AB) jams were prepared using the following proportions: F1 (70% BE:30% AB), F2 (60% BE:40% AB), F3 (40% BE:60% AB) and F4 (30% BE:70% AB). The jams were analyzed for physicochemical and sensory properties. The sensory acceptance test was performed by 50 panelists who were asked to indicate how much they liked/ disliked the jams based on the following attributes: color, aroma, flavor and texture. The formulations that contained more BE (F1 and F2) showed a lower titratable acidity (TA), higher ratio (SS/TA) and higher total sugar. A global analysis of the internal preference mapping verified that formulations F1 and F2 were preferred for flavor and had good acceptance levels for the other evaluated attributes, which indicated that the consumers favored jams with lower concentrations of AB and higher concentrations of BE. The formulation F1 was considered the most accepted for all attributes evaluated and showed high purchase intent (68%), and was therefore appropriate for industrialization and consumption.

Ectonucleotidases are enzymes involved in nucleotides metabolism. The amount of circulating nucleotides may modulate distinct pathophysiological processes in the vasculature, including platelet aggregation and vascular tone. Onion (Allium cepa L.) phenolic compounds modulate enzymatic activity. The present study evaluated the total phenolic content of red onion methanolic extract, its antioxidant capacity, and its ability to interfere in nucleotides hydrolyses in rat serum. Total phenolic content was determined with the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent using gallic acid as a standard, while total flavonoid content was obtained through the aluminum chloride colorimetric method with quercetin as a standard. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated from the ability of the extract to scavenge ABTS·+ and DPPH· radicals. ATP, ADP, AMP, and p-Nph-5'-TMP hydrolyses were colorimetrically determined in response to different onion extract concentrations (0, 125, 250, 500, or 1000 μg/mL). Phenolic content of the extract was 54.35 mg GAE 100 g-1 sample, while flavonoid content was 7.22 mg quercetin g-1 sample. The IC50 value for ABTS·+ was 374.13 ± 7.52 μg/mL, while it was 440.29 ± 15.17 μg/mL for DPPH·. Red onion extract increased ADP and p-Nph-5'-TMP hydrolysis. The results confirmed that red onion contains high content of antioxidant, mainly flavonoids, and high antioxidant capacity. Additionally, biochemical studies suggest that the increased ADP breakdown may be important to regulate vascular processes. As it occurs for other enzymes, the antioxidant capacity of onion extract may neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and favor ectonucleotidase activity and the hydrolysis of ADP, a major platelet agonist.

The short circuit is a severe fault that occurs in the stator windings. Therefore, it is very important to diagnose this type of failure in its beginning before it causes unscheduled stop and the machine loss. In this context, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a tool of considerable importance for standard classification. From some training data, it can diagnose whether or not there is a short circuit beginning, and which is important for predictive maintenance. This work proposes a technique for early detection of a short circuit between the turns aiming at its implementation in a real plant. The paper shows simulation and experimental results, and validates the proposed technique.

为提高低渗透油藏采收率,开发了一种阴非离子型Gemini表面活性剂ANG7-Ⅳ-7,并测定体系的界面张力、乳化性能和吸附量。结果表明,ANG7-Ⅳ-7表面活性剂浓度在1~4 g/L范围内,油水界面张力均可达到10-3m N/m的超低数量级,当ANG7-Ⅳ-7浓度为4 g/L时,能使油水界面张力达到最低值6.025×10-3m N/m;在注入浓度为4 g/L时,表面活性剂在油砂上的吸附量为2.035 mg/g。室内岩心驱油试验结果表明,4 g/L的ANG7-Ⅳ-7表面活性剂驱可在水驱后提高采收率11个百分点。

AIM: To evaluate preventative effects of glutamine in an animal model of gut ischemia/reperfusion(I/R).METHODS: Male Wistar rats were housed in a controlled environment and allowed access to food and water ad libitum. Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into four experimental groups:(1) control group(control)- rats underwent exploratory laparotomy;(2) control + glutamine group(control-GLU)- rats were subjected to laparotomy and treated intraperitoneally with glutamine 24 and 48 h prior to surgery;(3) I/R group- rats were subjected to occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery for 30 min followed by 15 min of reperfusion; and(4) ischemia/reperfusion + glutamine group(G + I/R)- rats were treated intraperitoneally with glutamine 24 and 48 h before I/R. Local and systemic injuries were determined by evaluating intestinal and lung segments for oxidative stress using lipid peroxidation and the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD), interleukin-6(IL-6) and nuclear factor kappa beta(NFkB) after mesenteric I/R. RESULTS: Lipid peroxidation of the membrane was increased in the animals subjected to I/R(P kB staining for each of the control groups was similar. The I/R group showed the largest area of staining for NF-kB. The G + I/R group had the second highest amount of staining, but the mean value was much lower than that of the I/R group(P < 0.05). In recent decades,third-generation(3G)biofuels have become a more attractive method of fuel production,as algae cultivation does not infringe on resources needed for food ***,algae can adapt to different environments,has high photosynthetic efficiency(CO_(2)fixation),and has a high potential for carbohydrate *** prevalence of algae worldwide demonstrates its ability to adapt to different environments and climates,proving its biodiversity and *** can be grown in wastewater,seawater,and even sewage,thus ensuring a lower water footprint and greater energy efficiency during algal biomass *** of this,the optimization of 3G ethanol production appears to be an excellent alternative to mitigate environmental impacts and increase energy and food *** critical review presents(i)the stages of cultivation and processing of micro and macroalgae;(ii)the selection of yeasts(through engineering and/or bioprospecting)to produce ethanol from these biomasses;(iii)the potential of seawater-based facilities to reduce water footprint;and(iv)the mass and energy balances of 3G ethanol production in the world energy *** article is,above all,a brainstorm on the environmental viability of algae bioethanol.

Applicability of the Method of Linear Dimensions to Estimate Leaf Area in Improved Genotypes of Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora

There are different methods to determinate leaf area in coffee plants;however, methodologies that allow measurement of leaf area accurately and in nondestructive ways are very important, as they are less economically costly and enable measurements on the same leaf over time, making it possible to describe accurate patterns of growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of the method to estimate leaf area using linear dimensions of leaves for improved genotypes of Coffea arabica L. and Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner. The experiment was conducted in two separated competition fields, each one following factorial schemes 10 × 2, with 10 genotypes and 2 methods to obtain the leaf area: measuring linear dimensions, and using equation model (estimated leaf area) and leaf area integrator (real leaf area). The genotypes for both Coffea arabica L. and Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner have different leaf areas, making it possible to discriminate groups of genotypes for both species using the size of their leaves as classification criteria. Even with the differences between genotypes, the pattern of leaf shape remains similar, confirming the applicability of the method to estimate leaf area using linear dimensions of leaves for improved genotypes, such as the model proposed by Barros, without the occurrence of loss of accuracy for the improved genotypes, for both Arabica and Conilon coffee, studied in this experiment.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection has affected the entire world,causing the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic since it was first discovered in Wuhan,China in December *** the clinical presentation of the disease,in addition to fever,fatigue,cough,dyspnea,diarrhea,nausea,vomiting,and abdominal pain,infected patients may also experience neurological and psychiatric repercussions during the course of the disease and as a post-COVID-19 ***,headache,dizziness,olfactory and gustatory dysfunction,cerebrovascular disorders,neuromuscular abnormalities,anxiety,depression,and post-traumatic stress disorder can occur both from the infection itself and from social distancing and *** to current evidence about this infection,the virus has the ability to infect the central nervous system(CNS)via angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)receptors on host *** studies have shown the presence of ACE2 in nerve cells and nasal mucosa,as well as transmembrane serine protease 2,key points for interaction with the viral Spike glycoprotein and entry into the CNS,being olfactory tract and blood-brain barrier,through hematogenous dissemination,potential ***,the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the CNS supports the development of neuropsychiatric *** management of these manifestations seems more complex,given that the dense parenchyma and impermeability of brain tissue,despite protecting the brain from the infectious process,may hinder virus ***,some alternatives used in non-COVID-19 situations may lead to worse prognosis of acute respiratory syndrome,requiring ***,the aim of this review is to bring more current points related to this infection in the CNS,as well as the repercussions of the isolation involved by the pandemic and to present perspectives on interventions in this scenario.
