BACkGROUND： Rheumatoid arthritis（RA） is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by functional disability and pain. Although acupuncture is widely used, until now Western acupuncture studies on RA have not shown conclusive positive results. Acupuncture is regarded as a reflex therapy that has effects on the human autonomic nervous system. By establishing a traditional Chinese medicine（TCM） diagnosis first, the practitioner is able to choose acupoints according to the state of each individual ***/DESIGN： We are interested if acupuncture, using a classical diagnostic procedure to allocate acupoints to the patient according to the Shang Han Lun theory, can be effective in relieving pain, improving hand function and increasing health-related quality of life in *** authors intend to harmonize TCM diagnosis according to clinical and genetic profiles. Study of the Superficial Modification of Sisal Fibres with Lignin, and Its Use As a Reinforcement Agent in Cementitious Composites

The objective of this work was to evaluate different superficial treatments of sisal fibres employing lignin,and their use as a reinforcement agent in cementitious *** treatments consisted of superficially impregnating sisal fibres(S)with organosolv lignin(LO),organosolv lignin and glutaraldehyde(LOG),kraft lignin(Lk)and kraft lignin and glutaraldehyde(LkG).The fibre modifications were verified by FTIR-ATR and SEM analyzes,and the presence of lignin on the surface of the fibres was evidenced,confirming the effectiveness of the *** mechanical,thermal(by TGA)and water absorption properties of the fibres before and after the modifications were also *** treatment,the modified fibres presented an expressive reduction of the water absorption and did not show significant changes in the mechanical properties when compared with the natural unmodified sisal fibre(SNAT).It was verified an increase in the thermal stability of the treated fibres which can be attributed to the insertion of lignin on the *** evaluate the performance of the fibres in the cementitious composites,cement plates(CP)were produced with different treated fibres(CP-SLOG,CP-SLO,CP-SLkG,CP-SLk)and fibres without treatment(CP-SNAT).The composites were evaluated concerning to the water absorption,porosity and mechanical *** fractured regions were also investigated by *** composites prepared showed similar values of absorption and porosity *** the mechanical properties,the composites prepared with modified fibres showed a significant increase in the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity compared with CP-SNAT,while toughness was similar to all *** the SEM images,it was observed that the modified fibres immersed in the cementitious plates showed no degradation,indicating that the impregnation of lignin acted as a protective agent of the ***,the treatments of the fibres with lignin led to a significant improvement in th

The value of the Formicidae (Insecta,Hymenoptera) community in forensic investigations is poorly studied in *** order to better understand the structure and dynamics of this group of insects in cadavers and their putative value in forensic investigations,studies were carried out in Lisbon area during one *** carcasses were used as a model of human *** entomofauna attracted to the carcasses was collected over a period of about 2 months in each season of the *** collection of ants was performed at regular intervals,daily in the first 23 days and then with intervals of 2,3 or 5 days until the end of the *** stages of cadaveric decomposition were recognized with the ants being present in all of *** hundred and nine specimens were captured: 7 in autumn,6 in winter,90 in spring and 206 in *** specimens belong to three subfamilies and seven different *** of them had never been mentioned before as being associated to cadavers in this geographical *** and summer had the greater diversity of species and a larger number of *** luteus was the dominant species in spring and Tapinoma nigerrimum in *** the information of other similar studies carried out in the Iberian Peninsula,the sarcosaprophagous Formicidae community found in Lisbon is unique and different from other studied locations,which supports the need to perform regional *** results shown that ants do not present a definite pattern of succession,but some species have the potential to be seasonal or geographic indicators.

International Financial Investments, Double Taxation of Dividends and ＂Effective Taxation＂ in the Portuguese Tax System

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the tax treatment of dividends established in the Portuguese corporate income tax code. The tax code aims at eliminating double taxation, if certain conditions are met. However, if dividends received were not previously subject to effective taxation, the elimination of double taxation no longer applies. The meaning of effective taxation is not defmed nor quantified in the code. But it is of great importance to firms＇ tax planning. In this context, it is a quite important concept, and the paper will discuss it. The methodological approach is based on using a hypothetical situation where a group of finns＇ faces different dividend flows, from diverse origins, and how taxes affect the overall tax burden of the group. The paper highlights the negative implications of a legal void in a very important tax topic regarding dividend policy in holding companies. It shows a tax induced level of uncertainty in designing dividend policy, and how it hinders financial management of groups of firms. The main conclusion is that the lack of a legal or quantitative definition of what constitutes effective taxation is an important factor of tax complexity in planning intercompany dividend policy, and the concept should be revised in legal terms.

Comparative efficiency analysis of different nonlinear modelling strategies to simulate the biaxial response of RC columns

The performance of different nonlinear modelling strategies to simulate the response of RC columns subjected to axial load combined with cyclic biaxial horizontal loading is compared. The models studied are classified into two categories according to the nonlinearity distribution assumed in the elements： lumped-plasticity and distributed inelasticity. For this study, results of tests on 24 columns subjected to cyclic uniaxial and biaxial lateral displacements were numerically reproduced. The analyses show that the global envelope response is satisfactorily represented with the three modelling strategies, but significant differences were found in the strength degradation for higher drift demands and energy dissipation.

Basic density, extractive content and moisture sorption properties of Pinus pinaster wood infected with the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

The pinewood nematode（PWN）, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, has become one of the most severe threats to pine forest worldwide. Nematodes, migrating through resin canals and feeding on the living cells, induce rapid metabolic changes in ray parenchyma cells, create cavitation areas, decrease xylem water content and oleoresin exudation, and cause necrosis of parenchyma and cambial cells. This study focused on the impact of PWN infection on technological parameters of wood and evaluated the impact of anatomic and biochemical incidences of tree defense reactions on basic density, extractive content and moisture sorption properties of Pinus pinaster *** of infected and uninfected wood were *** presence of nematodes reduced wood basic density by2 % and decreased the total content of extractives in infected wood as compared with uninfected（5.98 and8.90 % of dry wood mass, respectively）. Extractives in infected trees had inverse distribution along the trunk as compared with uninfected trees. The adsorption isotherms for infected and uninfected wood had similar *** recorded differences（some statistically significant） in the equilibrium moisture content of infected and uninfected wood under varying environmental conditions. Despite the verified differences in wood basic density, extractive content and moisture sorption properties, the overall conclusion is that the PWN had a slight impact on these characteristics of wood.

The chemical preparation, crystal structure and infrared spectroscopic characterization of the triaqua（4-amino-6-methoxypyrimidine） cuprate（II） sulfate, [Cu（C5H7N3）（H2O）3]SO4, is reported. The compound crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic space group P212121 with lattice parameters a = 7.9025（3）, b = 11.1189（4）, c = 12.9720（4） , V = 1139.81（7） ~3 and Z = 4. The Cu（II） cation is fivecoordinated, in an early half-way between square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal fashion, by two nitrogen atoms of the 4-amino-6-methoxypyrimidine ligand and three water oxygen atoms. In the atomic arrangement, the organic ligands and the 5-connected Cu centers are linked with each other to give a 1-D corrugated hybrid chain running along the b-axis direction. The chains are interconnected by the SO4^（2-） anions via O–H...O, O–H...S, C–H...O and N–H...O hydrogen bonds to form layers spreading parallel to the（011） plane. The vibrational absorption bands were identified by infrared spectroscopy. Quantitative measurements of the second harmonic generation（SHG） of a powdered sample at 1064 nm were performed and a relative efficiency of 5.2 times the kDP standard was observed. Magnetic properties were also defined to characterize the complex. Magnetic measurements revealed that this material had a onedimensional antiferromagnetic character. The magnetic parameters were g = 2.11 and 2J/k B = -36 k.
