Species diversity, regeneration and dominance as influenced by canopy gaps and their characteristics in tropical evergreen forests of Western Ghats, India

Canopy gaps play a significant role in maintaining structure and composition of tropical forests. This study was carried out in tropical evergreen forests of central Western Ghats in India to understand the influence of canopy gap size and the relationship of gap regime attributes to diversity measures and regeneration. The average gap size in the study area was found to be 396 m2 and around half of gaps were 4–8 years old. Gaps created by natural single tree fall were smaller in size but significantly higher in number. Diversity and regeneration of woody species were compared with canopy gaps and intact vegetation. Species richness and diversity was higher in gaps than in intact vegetation. Macaranga peltata, a shade intolerant species dominated gaps while intact vegetation was dominated by shade tolerant kingiodendron *** size significantly influenced species diversity and regeneration. Gap area and age were significantly and negatively correlated with diversity measures but positively correlated with regeneration. Among all the attributes of gaps, regeneration was significantly positively correlated with light intensity. Gaps maintained species diversity and favored regeneration of woody species. In addition to gap size and age, other gap ecological attributes also affected species diversity and regeneration.

Alternative splicing enhances transcriptome complexity in desiccating seeds

Before being dispersed in the environment, mature seeds need to be dehydrated. The survival of seeds after dispersal depends on their low hydration in combination with high desiccation tolerance. These characteristics are estab- lished during seed maturation. Some key seed maturation genes have been reported to be regulated by alternative splicing （AS）. However, so far AS was described only for single genes and a comprehensive analysis of AS during seed maturation has been lacking. We investigated gene expression and AS during Arabidopsis thaliana seed development at a global level, before and after desiccation. Bioinformatics tools were developed to identify differentially spliced regions within genes. Our data suggest the importance and shows the peculiar features of AS during seed desiccation. We identified AS in 347o of genes that are expressed at both timepoints before and after desiccation. Most of these AS transcript variants had not been found before in other tissues. Among the AS genes some seed master regulators could be found. Interestingly, 6% of all expressed transcripts were not transcriptionally regulated during desiccation, but only modified by AS. We propose that AS should be more routinely taken into account in the analysis of transcriptomic data to prevent overlooking potentially important regulators.

Room Temperature Ferromagnetism in Dual Doped (Mn^(2+), Ni^(2+)) ZnO Codoped with Li^(1+) Prepared Using EDTA Sintered at Low Temperature

Nanopowders of Znl_x_y_zMnxNiyLizO [（x = 0.04, y = 0, z = 0）, （x = 0.04, y = 0.03, z = 0） and （x = 0.04, y = 0.03, z = 0.03）] have been synthesized by sol-gel precursor route using ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid （EDTA） as a metal chelating agent. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the formation of wurtzite hexagonal structure for all the three compositions. Mn2＋ doped ZnO exhibits room temperature ferromagnetism （RTFM）, and it is found that further Ni2＋ doping has decreased Ms because of limit of solid solubility of transition metal in ZnO. But codoping of monovalent Li1＋, further increases the ferromagnetism （FM） value, due to introduction of free carriers compared to the dual doped samples. Photoluminescence （PL） spectra of the system, exhibit near band edge （NBE） emission peak at --464 nm due to the electron transition from interstitials to the valence band. Recombination of conduction electron with hole trapped at oxygen vacancy, leads to prominent defect emission peaks at --482 nm and 532 nm. The evidence of the formation of metaI-EDTA complexes are found from the Fourier transform infrared spectra at 2800-3800 cm-1 with shifting, splitting of the peak and also drastic variations in the intensity.

Science behind cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in humans:A clinical study

Objective:To investigate the relationship between serum electrolyte changes and cisplatin induced ***:We collected data from 18 patients undergoing cisplatin chemotherapy including serum electrolytes,creatinine,blood urea nitrogen(BUN) and urine potassium,sodium and pH levels before and after the cisplatin *** the patients had cancer and were treated with 40-50 mg/day *** injury was assessed by measuring serum electrolytes,creatinine,BUN levels and urine potassium,sodium and pH levels. Results:The five cycles of cisplatin based chemotherapy resulted in hypomagnesia(P=0.029), hypocalcaemia(P=0.001~*),hypophosphatemia(P=0.003*),hypokalemia(P=0.001~*)and increased serum creatinine(P=0.001~*)and BUN(P=0.292~*)*** urine analysis,decrease in potassium(P=0.024~*)was found,except potassium there was no significant changes in sodium and urine pH. Conclusions:The present study demonstrates that,acute nephrotoxicity was observed in patients with different types of cancers undergoing cisplatin based chemotherapy due to electrolyte disturbances,when no corrective measures were initiated.

Fabrication of multiwalled carbon nanotube-surfactant modi fi ed sensor for the direct determination of toxic drug 4-aminoantipyrine

A multi-walled carbon nanotube （MWCNT）-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide （CRAB） surfactant com- posite modified glassy carbon electrode （GCE） was developed as a novel system for the determination of 4-aminoantipyrine（AAP）. The oxidation process was irreversible over the pH range studied and exhibited a diffusion controlled behavior. All experimental parameters were optimized. The combination of MWCNT-CRAB endows the biosensor with large surface area, good biological compatibility, electricity and stability, high selectivity and sensitivity. MWCNT-CTAB/GCE electrode gave a linear response for AAP from 5.0 x 10-9 to 4.0 x 10-8 M with a detection limit of 1.63 x 10 lo M. The modified electrode showed good selectivity against interfering species and also exhibited good reproducibility. The present elec- trochemical sensor based on the MWCNT-CFAB/GCE electrode was applied to the determination of AAP in real samples.

Risk of pancreatic cancer in individuals with celiac disease in the United States:A population-based matched cohort study

BACkGROUND Celiac disease(CD)has been associated with gastrointestinal ***,the magnitude of the risk of pancreatic cancer(PC)associated with CD is much less clear,and risks have not been estimated from large *** To assess the risk of PC in CD *** We conducted a population-based,multicenter,propensity score-matched cohort study with consecutive patients diagnosed with CD using the TriNeTx research network *** examined the incidence of PC in patients with CD compared with a matched cohort of patients without CD(non-CD,controls).Each patient in the main group(CD)was matched to a patient in the control group using 1:1 propensity score matching to reduce confounding *** incidence of PC was estimated using a Cox proportional hazards model with a hazard ratio(HR)and 95%confidence interval(CI).RESULTS A total of 389980 patients were included in this *** them,155877 patients had a diagnosis of CD,and the remaining 234103 individuals without CD were considered a control *** mean duration of follow-up for patients in the CD and control cohorts was 5.8±1.8 and 5.9±1.1 years,*** the follow-up,309 patients with CD developed PC,whereas 240 patients developed PC in the control group(HR=1.29;95%CI:1.09-1.53).In the secondary analyses in the first year after diagnosis of CD,patients with CD were at a significant increase in risk for PC;151 patients with CD had an incidence of PC compared with 96 incidences of PC among the patients in the non-CD control group(HR=1.56;95%CI:1.20-2.01)and sensitivity analysis showed similar magnitude to the one generated in the primary and secondary *** Patients with CD are at increased risk of *** elevation persists beyond the first year after diagnosis to reference individuals without CD from the general population.

A 16-year-old man had aswelling over the anterior aspect of the proximal third of the tibia for 1 year, which was peanut size initially and progressively increased to its present size of 10 cm × 8 cm. He underwent fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC) twice during this period and reported aspindle cell sarcoma. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor(MPNST) is a malignancy of the connective tissue surrounding the nerves. Previously, MPNST was also known as neurofibrosarcoma, malignant schwannoma, andneurogenic sarcoma. We are reporting this case for its rarity and peculiar mode of presentation. FNAC/core biopsy can be used as an effective tool to achievethe correct pathological diagnosis.
