Robust multifocus deep neural network for progression prediction on patient trajectory data

Sensitivity of digital elevation models:The scenario from two tropical mountain river basins of the Western Ghats,India

The paper evaluates sensitivity of various spaceborne digital elevation models （DEMs）, viz., Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer （ASTER）, Shuttle Radar Topography Mapping Mission （SRTM） and Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 （GMTED）, in comparison with the DEM （TOPO） derived from contour data of 20 m interval of Survey of India topographic sheets of 1 ： 50,000 scale. Several topographic attributes, such as elevation （above mean sea level）, relative relief, slope, aspect, curvature, slope-length and -steepness （LS） factor, terrain ruggedness index （TRI）, topo- graphic wetness index （TWI）, hypsometric integral （lhyp） and drainage network attributes （stream number and stream length） of two tropical mountain river basins, viz. Muthirapuzha River Basin and Pambar River Basin are compared to evaluate the variations. Though the basins are comparable in extent, they differ in respect of terrain characteristics and climate. The result.,; suggest that ASTER and SRTM provide equally reliable representation of topography portrayed by TOP（） and the topographic attributes extracted from the spaceborne DEMs are in agreement with those derived from TOPO. Despite the coarser resolution, SRTM shows relatively higher vertical accuracy （RMSE -- 23 and 20 m respectively in MRB and PRB） compared to ASTER （RMSE - 33 and 24 m） and GMTED （RMSE - 59 and 48 m）. Vertical accuracy of all the spaceborne DEMs is influenced by relief of the terrain as well as type of vegetation. Further, GMTED shows significant deviation for most of the attributes, indicating its inability for mountain-river-basin-scale studies.

Tribological and vibrational characteristics of AISI 316L tested at elevated temperature and 600 Torr vacuum

Friction and wear studies enable the investigation of material interaction between two sliding surfaces in contact. In the present investigation, the coefficient of friction and the wear resistance of AISI 316 L parts were studied under self-mating, dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disc type configuration. The experiments were conducted at vacuum based high temperature pin-on-disc tribometer. The 4 mm diameter pin and 180 mm diameter disc were subjected to varying sliding velocities(0.5, 0.75 and 1.5 m/s) and were operated in 200, 400, 500 and 580 ℃ temperature at 600 Torr vacuum. The variation of specific wear rates with sliding velocities and different environmental conditions was studied. The morphology of sliding/rubbed surfaces was observed using Scanning Electron Microscope. In summary, it was found that a severe to mild wear transition occurred in sliding under operating conditions. Increased wear rates have been observed for 500 and 580 ℃ with increasing sliding velocity. Adhesive wear has been found to be predominant at 500 and 580 ℃ where as de-lamination has been observed at ambient temperature,200 and 400 ℃ in vacuum. The present paper also carried out the numerical analysis of the vibration behavior of AISI 316 L under thermal environment. Results revealed that at high temperature vibrational amplitude and natural frequency is significantly reduced. This can be attributed to the reduction in stiffness of the material at elevated temperatures. This high amplitude vibration during service can lead to high wear rate.

Multi-spectroscopic characterization of bovine serum albumin upon interaction with atomoxetine

The quenching interaction of atomoxetine(ATX) with bovine serum albumin(BSA) was studied in vitro under optimal physiological condition(pH=7.4) by multi-spectroscopic techniques. The mechanism of ATX-BSA system was a dynamic quenching process and was confirmed by the fluorescence spectra and lifetime measurements. The number of binding sites, binding constants and other binding characteristics were computed. Thermodynamic parameters ΔH^0 and ΔS^0 indicated that intermolecular hydrophobic forces predominantly stabilized the drug-protein system. The average binding distance between BSA and ATX was studied by F?rsters theory. UV-absorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), circular dichroism(CD), synchronous spectra and three-dimensional(3D) fluorescence spectral results revealed the changes in micro-environment of secondary structure of protein upon the interaction with ATX. Displacement of site probes and the effects of some common metal ions on the binding of ATX with BSA interaction were also studied.

Comparative study on transverse shrinkage, mechanical and metallurgical properties of AA2219 aluminium weld joints prepared by gas tungsten arc and gas metal arc welding processes

Aluminium alloy AA2219 is a high strength alloy belonging to 2000 series. It has been widely used for aerospace applications, especially for construction of cryogenic fuel tank. However, arc welding of AA2219 material is very critical. The major problems that arise in arc welding of AA2219 are the adverse development of residual stresses and the re-distribution as well as dissolution of copper rich phase in the weld *** effects increase with increase in heat input. Thus, special attention was taken to especially thick section welding of AA2219-T87 aluminium alloy. Hence, the present work describes the 25 mm-thick AA2219-T87 aluminium alloy plate butt welded by GTAW and GMAW processes using multi-pass welding procedure in double V groove design. The transverse shrinkage, conventional mechanical and metallurgical properties of both the locations on weld joints were studied. It is observed that the fair copper rich cellular(CRC) network is on Side-A of both the weldments. Further, it is noticed that, the severity of weld thermal cycle near to the fusion line of HAZ is reduced due to low heat input in GTAW process which results in non dissolution of copper rich phase. Based on the mechanical and metallurgical properties it is inferred that GTAW process is used to improve the aforementioned characteristics of weld joints in comparison to GMAW process.

Foil-like receptor agonists induce apoptosis in mouse 3-cell lymphoma cells by altering NF-κB activation

Toll-like receptor 9 （TLR9） recognizes microbial DNA containing unmethylated cytosyl guanosyl （CpG） sequences, induces innate immune responses, and facilitates antigen-specific adaptive immunity. Recent studies report that in addition to stimulating innate immunity, TLR9 ligands induce apoptosis of TLR9 expressing cancer cells. To understand the mechanism of TLR9-induced apoptosis, we compared the effects of CpG containing oligodeoxynucleotides （CpG ODN） on a mouse B-cell lymphoma line, CH27, with those on mouse splenic B cells. CpG ODN inhibited constitutive proliferation and induced apoptosis in the CH27 B-cell lymphoma line. In contrast, CpG ODN-treated primary B cells were stimulated to proliferate and were rescued from spontaneous apoptosis. The induction of apoptosis required the ODNs to contain the CpG motif and the expression of TLR9 in lymphoma B cells. A decrease in Bcl-xl expression and an increase in Fas and Fas ligand expression accompanied lymphoma B-cell apoptosis. Treatment with the Fas ligand-neutralizing antibody inhibited CpG ODN-induced apoptosis. CpG ODN triggered a transient NF-κB activation in the B-cell lymphoma cell line, which constitutively expresses a high level of c-Myc, while CpG ODN induced sustained increases in NF-κB activation and c-Myc expression in primary B cells. Furthermore, an NF-κB inhibitor inhibited the proliferation of the CH27 B-cell lymphoma line. Our data suggest that the differential responses of lymphoma and primary B cells to CpG ODN are the result of differences in NF-kB activation. The impaired NF-kB activation in the CpG ODN-treated B-cell lymphoma cell line alters the balance between NF-κB and c-Myc, which induces Fas/Fas ligand-dependent apoptosis.

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell is the most promising among the various types of fuel cells. Though it has found its applications in numerous fields, the cost and durability are key barriers impeding the commercialization of PEM fuel cell stack. The crucial and expensive component involved in it is the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and its degradation, which limits the performance and life of the fuel cell stack. A critical analysis and comprehensive understanding of the struc-tural and functional properties of various materials involved in the GDE can help us to address the related durability and cost issues. This paper reviews the key GDE components, and in specific, the root causes influencing the durability. It also envisages the role of novel materials and provides a critical recommendation to improve the GDE durability.
