Population growth, trophic level, and.some aspects of reprod.ctive biology of two congeneric archer fish species, Toxotes chatareus and.Toxotes jaculatrix, collected.from Johor coastal waters, Malaysia, were stud.ed. Growth pattern by length-weight relationship (W=aLb) for the sexes d.ffered. and.exhibited.positive allometric growth (male, female and.combined.sexes of T. chatareus; female and.combined.sexes of T. jaculatrix) and.isometric growth (male samples of T. jaculatrix only). Trophic levels of both species were analyzed.based.on 128 specimens. The results show that, in both species, crustaceans and.insects were the most abund.nt prey items, and.among crustaceans the red.clawed.crab Sesarma bid.ns and.Formicid.e family insects were the most represented.taxa. The estimated.mean trophic levels for T. chatareus and.T. jaculatrix were 3.422±0.009 and.3.420±0.020, respectively, ind.cating that they are largely carnivores. Fecund.ty of T. chatareus ranged.from 38 354 to 147 185 eggs for females with total length ranging from 14.5 to 22.5 cm and.total bod. weight from 48.7 to 270.2 g, and.T. jaculatrix 25 251 to 150 456 eggs for females with total length ranging from 12.2 to 23.0 cm and.total bod. weight from 25.7 to 275.0 g. d.fferences in values of gonad.somatic and.hepatosomatic ind.xes calculated.for both species in this stud. may have resulted.from uneven sample size ranges.

Improving Multimod.l Weather Forecast of Monsoon Rain Over China Using FSU Superensemble

In this paper we present the current capabilities for numerical weather pred.ction of precipitation over China using a suite of ten multimod.ls and.our superensemble based.forecasts. Our suite of mod.ls includ.s the operational suite selected.by NCARs TIGGE archives for the THORPEX Program. These are： ECMWF, Uk.O, JMA, NCEP, CMA, CMC, BOM, MF, k.A and.the CPTEC mod.ls. The superensemble strategy includ.s a training and.a forecasts phase, for these the period. chosen for this stud. includ. the months February through September for the years 2007 and.2008. This paper ad.resses precipitation forecasts for the med.um range i.e. d.ys 1 to 3 and.extend.ng out to d.y 10 of forecasts using this suite of global mod.ls. For training and.forecasts valid.tions we have mad. use of an ad.anced.TRMM satellite based.rainfall prod.ct. We mak. use of stand.rd.metrics for forecast valid.tions that includ. the RMS errors, spatial correlations and.the equitable threat scores. The results of sk.ll forecasts of precipitation clearly d.monstrate that it is possible to obtain higher sk.lls for precipitation forecasts for d.ys 1 through 3 of forecasts from the use of the multimod.l superensemble as compared.to the best mod.l of this suite. Between d.ys 4 to 10 it is possible to have very high sk.lls from the multimod.l superensemble for the RMS error of precipitation. Those sk.lls are shown for a global belt and.especially over China. Phenomenologically this prod.ct was also found.very useful for precipitation forecasts for the Onset of the South China Sea monsoon, the life cycle of the mei-yu rains and.post typhoon land.all heavy rains and.flood.events. The higher sk.lls of the multimod.l superensemble mak. it a very useful prod.ct for such real time events.

Recent progress in the single-cell C4 photosynthesis in terrestrial plants

Currently, single-cell C4 photosynthesis has been reported.in four terrestrial plant species, Bienertia cycloptera, B. sinuspersici, B. k.virense and.Suaed. aralocaspica, of family Chenopod.aceae. These species possess novel mechanisms of C4 photosynthesis through spatial partitioning of organelles and.k.y enzymes in d.stinct cytoplasmic d.mains within single chlorenchyma cells. Anatomical and.biochemical stud.es have shown that the three Bienertia species and.S. aralocaspica utilize biochemical and.organellar compartmentation to achieve the equivalent spatial separation of k.anz anatomy but within a single photosynthetic cell. These d.scoveries have challenged.the parad.gm for C4 photosynthesis in terrestrial plants which had.suggested.for more than 40 years that the k.anz feature was ind.spensably required.for its C4 function. In this review, we focus on the recent progress in und.rstand.ng the cellular and.molecular mechanisms that control the spatial relationship of organelles in these unique single-cell C4 systems. The d.monstrated.interaction of d.morphic chloroplasts with microtubules and.actin filaments has shed.light on the importance of these cytosk.leton components in the intracellular partitioning of organelles. Future perspectives on the potential function of the cytosk.leton in targeting gene prod.cts to specific subcellular compartments are d.scussed.

A simple yet useful criterion based.on external mark.ngs and.or number of d.rsal spines is currently used.to d.fferentiate two congeneric archer fish species Toxotes chatareus and.Toxotes *** we investigate other morphometric and.meristic characters that can also be used.to d.fferentiate these two *** component and.or d.scriminant functions revealed.that meristic characters were highly correlated.with pectoral fin ray count,number of lateral line scales,as well as number of anal fin *** results ind.cate that *** can be d.stinguished.from *** by having a greater number of lateral line scales,a lower number of pectoral fin rays,and.a higher number of anal fin *** contrast,morphometric d.scriminant analyses gave relatively low d.stinction:76.1% of fish were ascribed.to the correct species *** observed.morphometric d.fferences came from the d.rsal and.anal spines lengths,with *** having shorter d.rsal and.longer anal spines than ***,meristic traits were more useful than morphometrics in d.fferentiating the two species;nevertheless,meristics and.morphometrics together provid. information about the morphological d.fferentiation between these two closely related.archer fishes.

Alignment between galaxies and.large-scale structure

Based.on the Sloan d.gital Sk. Survey d.6 （Sd.S） and.the ＇Millennium Simulation （MS）, we investigate the alignment between galaxies and.large-scale structure. For this purpose, we d.velop two new statistical tools, namely the alignment correlation function and.the cos（20）-statistic. The former is a two-d.mensional extension of the trad.tional two-point correlation function and.the latter is related.to the ellipticity correlation function used.for cosmic shear measurements. Both are based.on the cross correlation between a sample of galaxies with orientations and.a reference sample which represents the large-scale structure. We apply the new statistics to the Sd.S galaxy catalog. The alignment correlation function reveals an overabund.nce of reference galaxies along the major axes of red. luminous （L 〉～L＊） galaxies out to projected.separations of 60 h-lMpc. The signal increases with central galaxy luminosity. No alignment signal is d.tected.for blue galaxies. The cos（2θ）-statistic yield. very similar results. Starting from a MS semi-analytic galaxy catalog, we assign an orientation to each red. luminous and.central galaxy, based.on that of the central region of the host halo （with size similar to that of the stellar galaxy）. As an alternative, we use the orientation of the host halo itself. We find.a mean projected.misalignment between a halo and.its central region of -25°. The misalignment d.creases slightly with increasing luminosity of the central galaxy. Using the orientations and.luminosities of the semi-analytic galaxies, we repeat our alignment analysis on mock.surveys of the MS. Agreement with the Sd.S results is good.if the central orientations are used. Pred.ctions using the halo orientations as proxies for cen- tral galaxy orientations overestimate the observed.alignment by more than a factor of 2. Finally, the large volume of the MS allows us to generate a two-d.mensional map of the alignment correlation function, which shows the reference galaxy d.strib
