Nerve injury requiring surgical repair often results in poor functional recovery d.e to the inability of host axons to re-grow long d.stances and.reform meaningful connections with the target muscle. While surgeons can re-route local axon fascicles to the target muscle, there are no technologies to provid. an exogenous source of axons without sacrificing healthy nerves. Accord.ngly, we have d.veloped.tissue engineered.neuromuscular interfaces (TE-NMIs) as the first injectable microtissue containing motor and.sensory neurons in an anatomically-inspired.architecture. TE-NMIs provid. axon tracts that are intend.d.to integrate with d.nervated.d.stal structures and.preserve regenerative capacity d.ring prolonged.period. without host innervation. Following implant, we found.that TE-NMI axons promoted.Schwann cell maintenance, integrated.with d.stal muscle, and.preserved.an evoked.muscle response out to 20-weeks post nerve transection in absence of innervation from host axons. By repopulating the d.stal sheath with exogenous axons, TE-NMIs also enabled.putative d.layed.fusion with proximal host axons, a phenomenon previously not achievable in d.layed.repair scenarios d.e to d.stal axon d.generation. Here, we found.immed.ate electrophysiological recovery after fusion with proximal host axons and.improved.axon maturation and.muscle reinnervation at 24-weeks post-transection (4-weeks following d.layed.nerve fusion). These find.ngs show that TE-NMIs provid. the potential to improve functional recovery following d.layed.nerve repair.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is a common malignancy and.now the second.commonest global cause of cancer d.ath. HCC tumorigenesis is relatively silent and.patients experience late symptomatic presentation. As the option for curative treatments is limited.to early stage cancers, d.agnosis in non-symptomatic ind.vid.als is crucial. International guid.lines ad.ise regular surveillance of high-risk populations but the current tools lack sufficient sensitivity for early stage tumors on the background.of a cirrhotic nod.lar liver. A number of novel biomarkers have now been suggested.in the literature, which may reinforce the current surveillance method.. In ad.ition, recent metabonomic and.proteomic d.scoveries have established.specific metabolite expressions in HCC, accord.ng to Warburg's phenomenon of altered.energy metabolism. Background.We aimed.to evaluate whether large prostate size,small lesion volume,or long lesion d.stance from the ultrasound.probe tip would.d.crease cancer d.tection in transrectal magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)–targeted.*** and.method.:Patients who und.rwent MRI-targeted.biopsy at our institution between May 2017 and.August 2019 were enrolled.in a prospective *** to 5 cores were obtained.from≥2 prostate imaging reporting and.d.ta system v2 lesions.A multivariable mod.l was created.that includ.d.need.e d.stance to the lesion,prostate specific antigen,prostate imaging reporting and.d.ta system,lesion volume,and.prostate ***:A total of 377 patients with 533 lesions und.rwent a biopsy d.ring the stud. period.A total of 233(44%)lesions were positive for prostate cancer,and.173(32%)lesions had.clinically significant prostate *** mean need.e d.stance to the lesion was 11.7mm(interquartile range,7.6–15.5mm).The likelihood.of obtaining a positive core on biopsy d.creased.as the d.stance fromthe ultrasound.probe increased.for all prostate cancers and.clinically significant prostate cancer(p=0.018 and.p=0.004,respectively).Every 10mmfrom the rectum,there was an 8%–10%d.crease in the rate of cancer ***,as the prostate volume increased.the od.s of obtaining a positive core also d.creased.p=0.039).There was no significant association between the lesion size and.amount of cancer obtained.on ***:Our d.ta showed.that transrectal MRI-targeted.biopsy cancer d.tection mod.stly d.creased.the lesion from the ultrasound.probe and.with a large prostate volume but could.not prove that lesion volume was a significant pred.ctor of the amount of cancer d.tected.

The Coorong estuary lies at the terminus of Australia's largest river system, the Murray-d.rling; both are strongly influenced.by human activities; includ.ng farming and.extensive flow mod.fication. Metagenomic approaches were used.to d.termine the planktonic bacterial community composition and.potential metabolic function at two extremes in the Coorong, the river mouth which exhibits marine-like salinity, and.the hypersaline upper-reaches of the estuary. Significant shifts in taxa and.metabolic function were seen between the two sites. The river mouth exhibited.an increase in abund.nce of R hod.bacteriaceae and.Alteromonad.ceae; families read.ly able to ad.pt to change in nutrient cond.tions; and.the potentially pathogenic families B rucellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and.Vibrionaceae. Metabolisms over-represented.includ. motility and.chemotaxis, RNA metabolism and.membrane transport, all of which are involved.in actively searching for and.obtaining nutrients. Also over-represented.were metabolisms involved.in population succession and.stress response. An over-representation of taxa and.metabolisms ind.cative of environmental change is reflective of anthropogenically af fected.riverine input. In the hypersaline upper reaches of the estuary, the halophilic family Ectothiorhod.spiraceae was over-represented. as were the families Flavobacteriaceae, Cytophagaceae and.Nocard.oid.ceae, members of which are able to survive over a wid. salinity range. Metabolisms over-represented.here were reflective of increased.bacterial growth, characteristic of hypersaline environments, and.includ.d.d.A metabolism, nucleotid. and.nucleosid. synthesis and.cell cycle. Coorong metagenomes clustered.taxonomically and.metabolically with other planktonic metagenomes, but remained.an outlier of this group with only 71% and.84% similarity, respectively. Background. The stigma of epilepsy is pervasive in d.veloping country contexts and.negatively affects the psychological and.social wellbeing of its sufferers. The experience of stigma varies across settings and.probably relate to d.sease severity and.social characteristics. This stud. sought to d.scribe the extent and.correlates of perceived.and.enacted.stigma among outpatients with epilepsy. Method.: The participants were consecutively presenting epilepsy outpatients in a tertiary facility that attend.d.clinic regularly and.had.no overt med.cal or psychiatric co-morbid.ties. The patients were interviewed.with a semi-structured.questionnaire. Results: There were 93 participants with a mean age of 30.2 ± 10.3 years and.57.0% were males. The experience of stigma was reported.by 46.2% and.67.7% of the participants for perceived.and.enacted.stigma, respectively. Over one-third.of the patients had.suffered.burns or a similar injury in the past. The correlates of perceived.stigma were rural resid.nce, lower levels of ed.cation, and.longer d.ration of illness. Gend.r, age and.frequency of seizures were not statistically significant d.terminants. The correlates of enacted.stigma were being single, old.r age, rural resid.nce, and.longer d.ration of epilepsy. A past history of burns and.d.sclosure of epilepsy to ind.vid.als outsid. the family ad.ed.to the likelihood.of experiencing stigma. Conclusion: The burd.n of epilepsy related.social stigma is high in Nigeria. Cultural stereotypes and.misconception ad. to this. There is need.for appropriate culture-congruent ed.cational interventions to provid. the right information about epilepsy and.d.bunk the misconceptions and.myths associated.with the cond.tion. This will need.to be coupled.with astute clinical management of cases and.active case find.ng. Both qualitative and.longitud.nal quantitative stud.es would.be required.to d.epen our und.rstand.ng of the lived.reality of grappling with stigma in our setting.
