Ballistic response of armour plates using Generative Adversarial Networks

It is important to understand how ballistic materials respond to impact from projectiles such that informed decisions can be made in the design process of protective armour systems. Ballistic testing is a standards-based process where materials are tested to determine whether they meet protection, safety and performance criteria. For the V50ballistic test, projectiles are fired at different velocities to determine a key design parameter known as the ballistic limit velocity(BLV), the velocity above which projectiles perforate the target. These tests, however, are destructive by nature and as such there can be considerable associated costs, especially when studying complex armour materials and systems. This study proposes a unique solution to the problem using a recent class of machine learning system known as the Generative Adversarial Network(GAN). The GAN can be used to generate new ballistic samples as opposed to performing additional destructive experiments. A GAN network architecture is tested and trained on three different ballistic data sets, and their performance is compared. The trained networks were able to successfully produce ballistic curves with an overall RMSE of between 10 and 20 % and predicted the V50BLV in each case with an error of less than 5 %. The results demonstrate that it is possible to train generative networks on a limited number of ballistic samples and use the trained network to generate many new samples representative of the data that it was trained on. The paper spotlights the benefits that generative networks can bring to ballistic applications and provides an alternative to expensive testing during the early stages of the design process.

Design Procedure for Reinforced Concrete Beams and Reinforcement Replacement by Bamboo

The use of non-renewable resources by the construction industry has several environmental consequences, contributing to excessive energy consumption and loss of materials. So, the construction sector is always in search of improvement and methods that innovate the existing techniques, aiming at the use of alternative and sustainable materials. Bamboo is a perennial plant with fast growth rate and low cost that has great physical and mechanical characteristics that assure its performance in the building environment. The use of beams with total or partial replacement of steel by bamboo has been well studied, due to the possibility of using the same design methods used in reinforced concrete beams, since the bamboo-reinforced beams meet the Bernoulli-Kirchoff bending theory. The objective of the work was to adapt a design procedure into an electronic spreadsheet for bamboo reinforced concrete beams subjected to four-point bending, with rectangular section, according to Brazilian Standard NBR 6118 (2014). The spreadsheet was tested based on other authors taking into consideration a steel double reinforcement. The resulting values were equivalents to those obtained by the authors, validating the efficiency of the worksheet. This methodology aims to optimize the design process of beams and enable the substitution of steel by bamboo, highlighting the validation, from the structural point of view, obtained by the authors.

This paper presents a reliability-based settlement analysis of T-shaped deep cement mixing(TDM)pile-supported embankments over soft *** uncertainties of the mechanical properties of the in-situ soil,pile,and embankment,and the effect of the pile shape are considered *** analyses are performed using Monte Carlo Simulations in combination with an adaptive Kriging(using adaptive sampling algorithm).Individual and system failure probabilities,in terms of the differential and maximum settlements(serviceability limit state(SLS)requirements),are *** reliability results for the embankments supported by TDM piles,with various shapes,are compared and discussed together with the results for conventional deep cement mixing pile-supported embankments with equivalent pile *** influences of the inherent variabilities in the material properties(mean and coefficient of variation values)on the reliability of the piled embankments,are also *** study shows that large TDM piles,particularly those with a shape factor of greater than 3,can enhance the reliability of the embankment in terms of SLS requirements,and even avoid unacceptable reliability levels caused by variability in the material properties.

Contribution of the Incorporation of Poultry Litter and Limestone for the Fertility of Sandy Soil in the Brazilian Amazon

Sandy soils have limitations for growing plants. In general, they have low fertility, high toxic aluminum content and low organic matter. The organic matter is responsible for most of the cation exchange capacity of these soils. Added to this, the low clay content and the structure of these soils with large volumes of macropores, determine their low water retention. An alternative is the incorporation of organic waste combined with the practice of liming. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of the incorporation of poultry litter and limestone in the fertility of sandy soils in the Brazilian Amazon. The experiment was conducted in Colorado do oeste, Ro, on a Quartzipsamment in a completely randomized block design in a 4 × 4 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to four doses of poultry litter (0, 5, 10 and 15 mg·ha-1), its incorporation for four times (0, 75, 110 and 145 days) in the presence and absence of 2 mg·ha-1 of limestone, with six replications. The incorporation of 15 mg·ha-1 of poultry litter combined with 2 mg·ha-1 of limestone for 75 days after the merger raises several components of Quartzipsamment fertility, mainly being the availability of phosphorus.

Heritage Agencies and the Conservation of Brazilian Modern Masterpieces: A Partial Report

The effect of addition of Ru and Pd to Mo/HZSM-5 catalysts used in the dehydroaromatization of methane was investigated. Catalytic tests and temperature-programmed oxidation results showed that Pd-based catalysts were more selective to naphthalene and suffered strong deactivation. The presence of Ru improved the activity and stability, with a decrease in the carbonaceous deposit probably because of a mechanism of protection of the Mo2C surface.

Thermal and structural properties of Nd2o3-doped calcium boroaluminate glasses

Nd^3＋ doped Cao-Al2o-B2o3-CaF2 glasses were prepared by conventional melt-quenching technique,and their structural and thermal properties were *** amorphous nature of these samples was confirmed by X-ray diffraction（XRD）.The measured density showed an increase with Nd2o3 doping,at the expense of *** spectra presented changes with addition of Nd2o3,which indicated that the network structure of the glasses studied presented various borate groups,such as tetraborates,metaborates,ortho-borates and pyroborates *** N4 values calculated from FTIR spectra revealed that incorporation of Nd2o3 into glass network converted the structural units from Bo4 to *** the analysis of DTA curves,we verified that Tg increased with the addition of Nd2o3;it was similar to the behavior caused by modifier oxides in the structure of borate *** that,the calculated glass stability Tx–Tg for doped samples presented a decrease if compared to the undoped *** heat and thermal conductivity did not present significant changes with Nd2o3 concentration,up to 2.30 mol.%.The results of density,DTA,Raman and FTIR reinforced the idea that Nd2o3 acted as network modifier.
