Hepatoprotective effect of Geranium schiedeanum against ethanol toxicity during liver regeneration

AIM: To evaluate the effect of an extract of Geranium schiedeanum(Gs) as a hepatoprotective agent against ethanol(Et OH)-induced toxicity in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats weighing 200-230 g were subjected to a 70% partial hepatectomy(PH); they were then divided into three groups(groups 1-3). During the experiment, animals in group 1 drank only water. The other two groups(2-3) drank an aqueous solution of Et OH(40%, v/v). Additionally, rats in group 3 received a Gs extract daily at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight intragastically. Subsequently, to identify markers of liver damage in serum, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin and bilirubin were measured by colorimetric methods. Glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were also determined. In addition, oxidative damage was estimated by measuring lipid peroxidation [using thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances(TBARS)] in both plasma and the liver and by measuring the total concentration of antioxidants in serum and the total antioxidant capacity in the liver. In addition, a liver mass gain assessment, total DNA analysis and a morpho-histological analysis of the liver from animals in all three groups were performed and compared. Finally, the number of deaths observed in the three groups was ***: Administration of the Geranium shiedeanum extract significantly reduced the unfavorable effect of ethanol on liver regeneration(restitution liver mass: PHEt OH group 60.68% vs PH-Gs-Et OH group 69.22%). This finding was congruent with the reduced levels of hepatic enzymes and the sustained or increased levels of albumin and decreased bilirubin in serum. The extract also modified the metabolic processes that regulate glucose and lipid levels, as observed from the serum measurements. Lower antioxidant levels and the liver damage induced by Et OH administration appeared to be mitigated by the extract, as observed from the TBARs(PH-Et OH group 200.14 mmol/mg vs PH-Gs-Et OH group 5

Air Quality Trends in Metropolitan Zones in Veracruz, México

Mexico and currently in Veracruz state, there are metropolitan zones (MZ) growing. Therefore, main objective in this paper is to analyze new data and AQ trends during 01.09.2013 to 30.06.2015 of two new AQ monitoring stations installed in Xalapa and Minatitlan MZ in 2013-year. The methodology applied used quality criteria to the datasets, followed by data validation and statistics for further analysis to determine the hourly, weekly and yearly trends of NO2, O3, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5. Indicators were compared with Mexican standards, CAI-laC report, WHO guidelines, EU and USA standards to evaluate the AQ in both sites. We observed AQ trends from moderate to bad in Xalapa and Minatitlan MZ where the PM10 and PM2.5 surpassed the WHO guidelines and Mexican standards. O3 and SO2 in Xalapa presented a quality from good to moderate and in Minatitlan sometimes were from moderate to bad. NO2 did not exceed the value limits of Mexican standards, only Xalapa has exceeded the WHO guidelines. In Minatitlan, the Mexican limits were not exceeded. Concluding, PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were the main problem. Others pollutants that influenced the AQ were O3, NO2 and SO2 in Minatitlan MZ due probably to meteorology, site conditions, location and oil and petrochemical industries. In Xalapa, MZ NO2 and SO2 are attributed mainly to road transport.

BACKGROUND:Hypertriglyceridemia is an unusual cause of acute pancreatitis and sometimes considered to be an *** study aimed to investigate the clinical and analytical features and the APOE genotypes in patients with acute pancreatitis and severe ***:We undertook a one-year,prospective study of patients with acute pancreatitis whose first laboratory analysis on admission to the emergency department included measurement of serum *** APOE genotype was determined and the patients answered an established questionnaire within the first 24 hours concerning their alcohol consumption,the presence of co-morbidities and any medications being *** patients’ progression,etiological diagnosis,hospital stay and clinical and radiological severity were all ***:Hypertriglyceridemia was responsible for 7 of 133 cases of pancreatitis (5%);the remaining cases were of biliary (53%),idiopathic (26%),alcoholic (11%) or other (5%) *** with these remaining cases,the patients with hypertriglyceridemia were significantly younger,had more relapses,and more often had diabetes *** usually consumed alcohol or consumed it excessively on the days before ***,the ε4 allele of the APOE gene was more common in this group (Pdes of acute pancreatitis is caused by hypertriglyceridemia and it is linked to genetic (ε4 allele) and comorbid factors such as diabetes and,especially,alcohol consumption.

large ground-based laser beam interferometers are presently in operation both in the USA （LIGO） and in Europe （VIRGO） and potential sources that might be detected by these instruments are revisited. The present generation of detectors does not have a sensitivity high enough to probe a significant volume of the universe and, consequently, predicted event rates are very low. The planned advanced generation of interferometers will probably be able to detect, for the first time, a gravitational sig- nal. Advanced LIGO and EGO instruments are expected to detect few （some）： binary coalescences consisting of either two neutron stars, two black holes or a neutron star and a black hole. In space, the sensitivity of the planned LISA spacecraft constellation will allow the detection of the gravitational signals, even within a ＂pessimistic＂ range of possible signals, produced during the capture of compact objects by supermassive black holes, at a rate of a few tens per year.

Nitric oxide(NO)and hydrogen sulfide(HS)are two molecules that share signaling properties in plant and animal cells NO and H2S originate two farmilies of de rived mol ecules designated reactive nitrogen and sulfur species(RNS and RSS,respectively).These molecules are responsible for certain protein regulatory processes through posttranslational modifications(PTMs),being the most remarkable S nitrosation and persufidation,which afect the thiol group of cysteine *** and H2S can also exert regulatory functions due to their interaction through the iron present in proteins that contain heme groups or iron-sulfur dlusters,as reported mainly in animal ***,the available information in plant cells is still very limited thus *** higher plants,NO and H2S are involved in a myriad of physiological events from seed germination to fruit ripening,but also the mec hanism of response to biotic and abiotic stress *** vie wpoint manuscript highlights the functional regulatory parllelism of these two molecules which also interact with the metabolism of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in plant cells.

Qualitative Research and Narrative Sources in the Context of Critical and Renal Cares

The objective of this study is to clarify the relevance of qualitative research in the context of critical care and renal dialysis requires using narrative sources. Also specific objectives are to identify the phases or cultural moments that are distinguished in these processes. Research Question: How can the narrative materials contribute to the study of the processes of critical care and/or qualitative research in nephrology? Method and Sources: There have been studies focusing on the narrative of patients who have written their experiences building a literature experience ill (Siles et al., 1997, 1999, 2000). Sources have been used to extract testimony retrospective autobiographies written by people who have experienced the experiences of different diseases (Allué, 1996, 1997, Zorn, 1991, Gilbert, 1993;Comas, 2009;Gracia Armendáriz, 2010;Sampedro, 1996, Sacks, 2010). The analysis was developed by categorizing units of meaning, meaning families and networks. To identify the cultural moments we have followed the criteria established by Siles and Solano (2009): Multiculturalism, interculturalism and transculturalism. To identify rites of passage and liminality states have followed the principles outlined by Van Gennep (2013) and Turner (1990, 2008). Results: We identified cultural moments and characteristic states of liminality in critical care and kidney. Conclusions: narrative sources are effective for analyzing the meanings and experiences of patients in critical care and nephrology tool.

The Impact of Hurricane Strikes on Short-Term Local Economic Activity: Evidence from Nightlight Images in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is highly exposed to adverse natural events that put the country at risk of losing hard-won economic, social, and environmental gains due to the impacts of disasters. This study used monthly nightlight composites in conjunction with a wind field model to econometrically estimate the impact of tropical cyclones on local economic activity in the Dominican Republic since 1992. It was found that the negative impact of storms lasts up to 15 months after a strike, with the largest effect observed after 9 months. Translating the reduction in nightlight intensity into monetary losses by relating it to quarterly gross domestic product(GDP) suggests that on average the storms reduced GDP by about USD 1.1 billion(4.5% of GDP 2000 and 1.5% of GDP 2016).

Impacts on the Urban Air Quality and Health of Global Climate Scenarios Using Different Dynamical Downscaling Approaches

The objective of this publication is to present a modeling system that allows investigating the possible climate change-driven effects of air pollutants on human health. The system connects global climate change to ambient air pollution concentrations that then are linked to epidemiological endpoints. The tool has been applied to quantify the future (2030, 2050 and 2100) impact on air pollution and health of two of the IPCC global climate scenarios over the cities: Madrid, Milan and London (zone Kensington-Chelsea) with different very high spatial resolutions (100, 200 and 10 meters) respect to the present (2011). Results indicate how ambient air pollutant concentrations respond to different climatic conditions, and how human health could be affected by changes in air pollution induced by global warning. The system includes global climate simulations, nested with regional/urban meteorological models (prognostic and diagnostic) to drive chemical transport models (offline and online modes) and a computational fluid dynamic model keeping anthropogenic emissions and the urban landscape at reference level (2011) to isolate the effects of the global climate over the city. The results of these simulations suggest that climate will have an important effect on urban air pollution and health over the next several decades, especially under the IPCC RCP 8.5 scenario.

PillCam~ SB3 capsule: Does the increased frame rate eliminate the risk of missing lesions?

Since its emergence in 2000, small bowel capsule endoscopy(SBCE) has assumed a pivotal role as an investigation method for small bowel diseases. The PillCam SB2-ex offers 12 h of battery time, 4 more than the previous version(SB2). Rahman et al recently found that the PillCam SB2-ex has a significantly increased completion rate, although without higher diagnostic yield, compared with the SB2. We would like to discuss these somewhat surprising results and the new potentialities of the PillCam SB3 regarding the diagnostic yield of small bowel studies. PillCam SB3 offers improved image resolution and faster adaptable frame rate over previous versions of SBCE. We recently compared the major duodenal papilla detection rate obtained with PillCam SB3 and SB2 as a surrogate indicator of diagnostic yield in the proximal small bowel. The PillCam SB3 had a significantly higher major duodenal papilla detection rate than the PillCam SB2(42.7% vs 24%, P = 0.015). Thus, the most recent version of the PillCam capsule, SB3, may increase diagnostic yield, particularly in the proximal segments of the small bowel.
