Disbond detection with piezoelectric wafer active sensors in RC structures strengthened with FRP composite overlays

The capability of embedded piezoelectric wafer active sensors(PWAS)to perform in-situ nondestructive evaluation(NDE)for structural health monitoring(SHM)of reinforced concrete(RC)structures strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)composite overlays is ***,the disbond detection method were developed on coupon specimens consisting of concrete blocks covered with an FRP composite *** was found that the presence of a disbond crack drastically changes the electromecfianical(E/M)impedance spectrum lneasurcd at the PWAS *** spectral changes depend on the distance between the PWAS and the crack ***,large scale experiments were conducted on a RC beam strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP)composite *** beam was subject to an accelerated fatigue load regime in a three-point bending configuration up to a total of 807,415 *** these fatigue tests,the CFRP overlay experienced disbonding beginning at about 500,000 *** PWAS were able to detect the disbonding before it could be reliably seen by visual *** correlation between the PWAS readings and the position and extent of disbond damage was *** preliminary results demonstrate the potential of PWAS technology for SHM of RC structures strengthened with FRP composite overlays.

Respiration protocols have been developed to manipulate mental states,including their use for therapeutic *** this systematic review,we discuss evidence that respiration may play a fundamental role in coordinating neural activity,behavior,and *** main findings are:(1)respiration affects the neural activity of a wide variety of regions in the brain;(2)respiration modulates different frequency ranges in the brain’s dynamics;(3)different respiration protocols(spontaneous,hyperventilation,slow or resonance respiration)yield different neural and mental effects;and(4)the effects of respiration on the brain are related to concurrent modulation of biochemical(oxygen delivery,pH)and physiological(cerebral blood flow,heart rate variability)*** conclude that respiration may be an integral rhythm of the brain’s neural *** provides an intimate connection of respiration with neuro-mental features like emotion.A respiratory-neuro-mental connection holds the promise for a brain-based therapeutic usage of respiration in mental disorders.

Linking Groundwater Quality and Quantity： An Assessment of Satellite-based Groundwater Storage Anomalies from GRACE against Ground Measurements of Contaminants in California

Groundwater comprises a large portion of irrigation for California＇s agriculture, and sustains a wide diversity of ecosystems as well as consumptive use, but pumping is occurring faster than replenishment. At the same time, contaminants from fertilizers and pesticides are infiltrating into the groundwater, becoming increasingly concentrated as water is extracted. It compared space-based observations of groundwater anomalies from California＇s San Joaquin Valley using the GRACE （gravity recovery and climate experiment） against measurements of 42 organic and inorganic chemicals from 41,667 wells in the valley from 2003 to 2010. It compared Arsenic, boron, Cadmium, Chloride, Selenium, Trichloroethylene, and TDS （total dissolved solid） concentrations with the groundwater storage anomaly from 2003 to 2010. The results show strong correlations for groundwater depletion against increasing chloride （r2= 0.78, p 〈 0.05） and boron （r2 = 0.88, p 〈 0.05）. This indicates increasing contaminant concentrations while groundwater was depleting over the last eight years. Solubilization by complexation with Cl, CO3 and/or organic chelates may account for the increasing concentration of some heavy metals when groundwater depletion occurs. These results are the first to link space-based groundwater mass change with groundwater contaminant concentration change.

Mitochondrial Dysregulation in Skeletal Muscle from Patients Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and Sporadic Inclusion body Myositis

Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and disruption of mitochondrial dynamic pathways has been documented in brains from patients diagnosed with AD;although it is unclear whether other tissues are also affected. Much less is known about the mitochondria in patients diagnosed with sporadic Inclusion body Myositis (sIbM). The current study examined mitochondrial biology in skeletal muscle from AD and sIbM patients compared to healthy, elderly individuals. Skeletal muscle samples were obtained from the National Disease Research Interchange and mRNA, protein content, and enzyme activity was used to assess mitochondrial parameters. Patients diagnosed with AD or sIbM demonstrated reduced mitofusin 2 and optic atrophy protein 1 protein. AD patients also displayed increased mRNA of superoxide dismutase 2, catalase, and uncoupling protein 3. Amyloid b precursor protein mRNA was higher in sIbM patients only compared to both AD patients and elderly individuals. both total and phosphorylated AMPK protein content, an upstream regulator of mitochondrial dynamics and biogenesis, were also reduced in sIbM patients. The current study demonstrates a disruption in signaling pathways regulating mitochondrial dynamics in both AD and sIbM patients, although the underlying causes may differ.

Proteases or peptidases constitute the largest group of enzymes in bio-industry with a long array of uses. They play an invincible role in industrial biotechnology, especially in detergent, food and pharmaceutical arena. This focused review encompasses an overview on alkaline proteases, mainly of microbial sources in a handy module. Following an introduction and general classification with evolutionary insight, major sources of proteases (animal, plant and microbial including fungal, bacterial), their general properties with mechanism of action and molecular masses are discussed. Proteases frombacillusspp. have been given special attention. In addition to this, an overview on the applications of proteases in detergent, tannery, food, metal recovery and waste treatment industries is also addressed briefly.

Development of a Functional Food Product Using Guavas

The global market of functional foods and demand for a healthy lifestyle among consumers in recent years is growing. Guava is a highly perishable fruit and a rich source of vitamin C. Guava Cheese (GC) is a semi-solid concentrated fruit product that could be consumed as a snack. The objectives were to develop a guava cheese (GC) and determine the antioxidant potential of the product. Formulation consisted of guava puree with added sucrose or agave, chia seeds and almonds. Pectin was added at select concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%) along with citric acid to enhance the consistency of GC. Physiochemical and sensory parameters were analyzed for extended shelf life (3 months) studies. Moisture content, pH, water activity, color (L*, a*, b*) and texture profile analysis (hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness) did not change over the 90-day period. Ash, protein and fat contents of 0% pectin were 2% lower than GC with pectin. Sensory parameters (firmness, mouthfeel, flavor and overall acceptability) of GC 0% pectin and 1% GC were similar. Total content in 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% pectin added GC were 150.49 ± 32.76, 340.17 ± 54.65, 346.39 ± 53.04, and 355.72 ± 14.24 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100g. Flavonoid content in 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% GC were 159.73 ± 13.31, 332.77 ± 13.31, 341.65 ± 15.37, and 350.52 ± 16.60 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/100g. Similarly, antioxidant of potential measure by DPPH radical scavenging was similar in all samples (IC50 at 0.8 mg/ml). Guava cheese may be utilized as a healthy fruit snack because of added alternative sweeteners and functional ingredients to obtain health benefits. Adding pectin to guava cheese improved functionality by increasing antioxidant potential as well as physical properties.
