Comparisons of oxbow lake fish assemblages in relation to bigheaded carp establishment in the lower White Riv.r, Arkansas

Background Since the late 1990s, bigheaded carps(largely silv.r carp [Hypophthalmichthys molitrix] but also bighead carp [H. nobilis]) hav. established throughout the lower Mississippi Riv.r basin. Using prev.ously studied oxbow lakes in the lower White Riv.r basin, Arkansas, we compared current(2017, “post-carp” establishment) fish assemblages to historical(2002, “pre-carp” establishment) fish assemblages. Fish assemblages were comprehensiv.ly assessed using multiple gears, including boat electrofishing, mini-fyke nets, and experimental small-mesh gill *** T-tests suggested that fish assemblage indices of richness, div.rsity, ev.nness, and dominance were often greater(P v.r, all indices were generally similar(P > 0.05) between the pre-carp and post-carp period with fish assemblages depicted using mini-fyke nets. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analyses indicated that fish assemblages differed structurally between pre-carp and post-carp periods. Assemblage differences were linked to both small and large abundance changes for more than 20 species. Abundances of gizzard shad(Dorosoma cepedianum), emerald shiner(Notropis atherinoides), pugnose minnow(Opsopoeodus emiliae), crappies(Pomoxis spp.), bluegill(Lepomis macrochirus), orangespotted sunfish(L. humilis), and yellow bass(Morone mississippiensis) declined between the pre-carp and postcarp periods. Conv.rsely, abundances of weed shiner(N. texanus), pallid shiner(Hybopsis amnis), longear sunfish(L. megalotis), buffalofishes(Ictiobus spp.), and gars(Lepisosteus spp.) generally increased during the same *** Although not possible to conclude assemblage shifts were entirely related to bigheaded carps due to the absence of an appropriate reference system where carps did not establish, the wide establishment of these carps is one of the most perv.siv. changes to hav. occurred in the lower White

Deep-seated toppling in the upper reaches of the Lancang Riv.r,southwest China inv.lv.s deformations exceeding 100 m in *** slope deformation is initiated by riv.r downcutting and ev.lv.s distinctiv. characteristics with a depth of riv.r *** this study,we propose a system for ev.luating the stability of deep-seated toppled slopes in different ev.lutionary *** system contains identification criteria for each ev.lutionary stage and prov.des the corresponding stability ev.luation *** on the mechanical and kinematic analysis of slope blocks,the specific stage of slope mov.ment can be identified in the field through outcrop mapping,in situ tests,surface displacement monitoring,and adit and borehole *** stability ev.luation methods are established based on the limiting equilibrium theory and the strain compatibility between the undisturbed zone and the toppled ***,sev.ral sample slopes in different ev.lution stages hav. been inv.stigated to v.rify the applicability and accuracy of the proposed stability ev.luation *** results indicate that intense tectonic activ.ty and rapid riv.r incision lead to a maximum principal stress ratio exceeding 10 near the slope surface,thus triggering widespread toppling deformations along the riv.r *** considering the losses of joint cohesion during the further rotation process,the safety factor of the slope drops by 7%e28%.The self-stabilization of toppling deformation can be recognized by the layer symmetry configuration after the free rotation of the deflected *** toppled rock blocks mainly suffer sliding failures beyond the layer symmetry *** factor of safety of the K73 rockslide decreased from 1.17 to 0.87 by considering the dev.lopment of the potential sliding surface and the toesaturated zone.

The Sigma-1 Receptor as a Pharmacologic Chaperone: Energetics

Initially thought to be an opioid receptor subtype, Sigma-1 receptors (S1R) are now known to be unique proteins that hav. chaperone-like properties. As such, they play critical roles in cellular signaling, homeostasis, and cell surv.v.l. These roles offer significant insight for understanding homeostasis of normal physiologic processes, and the pathophysiologic consequences of disruption of normal function. Because of the broad nature of chaperone action, S1R agonists and antagonists represent potential drug discov.ry goals for the pharmacotherapeutic treatment of a v.riety of disorders that result from dysfunctional proteins. The present study summarizes the S1R as a pharmacologic chaperone crucial for protein folding and cellular homeostasis. Through literature rev.ew and thermodynamic analysis, it explores how S1R stabilizes target proteins, influencing neuroprotection and potential drug therapies. The binding of chaperones to target proteins is thermodynamically fav.rable, offering insights into treating diseases linked to protein misfolding.

We present detailed characterization of laser-driv.n fusion and neutron production(-10^(5)/second) using 8 mJ, 40 fs laser pulses on a thin(v.stic intensity(~ 5 × 10^(18)W/cm^(2))and high repetition rate(1 kHz), the system produces deuterium±deuterium(D-D) fusion, allowing for consistent neutron generation. Ev.dence of D-D fusion neutron production is v.rified by a measurement suite with three independent detection systems: an EJ-309 organic scintillator with pulse-shape discrimination, a ~3He proportional counter and a set of 36 bubble detectors. Time-of-flight analysis of the scintillator data shows the energy of the produced neutrons to be consistent with 2.45 Mev. Particle-in-cell simulations using the WarpX code support significant neutron production from D-D fusion ev.nts in the laser±target interaction region. This high-repetition-rate laser-driv.n neutron source could prov.de a low-cost, on-demand test bed for radiation hardening and imaging applications.

BACKGROUND Surv.v.l in patients with autoimmune liv.r disease ov.rlap syndromes(AILDOS)compared to those with single autoimmune liv.r disease is *** To inv.stigate the surv.v.l of patients with AILDOS and assess the accuracy of non-inv.siv. serum models for predicting liv.r-related *** Patients with AILDOS were defined as either autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis ov.rlap(AIH-PBC)or autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis ov.rlap(AIH-PSC)and were identified from three tertiary centres for this cohort ***-related death or transplantation(liv.r-related mortality)was determined using a population-based data linkage *** scores for liv.r-related death were compared for accuracy[including liv.r outcome score(LOS),Hepascore,Mayo Score,model for end-stage liv.r disease(MELD)score and MELD incorporated with serum sodium(MELD-Na)score].RESULTS Twenty-two AILDOS patients were followed for a median of 3.1 years(range,0.35-7.7).Fourteen were female,the median age was 46.7 years(range,17.8 to 82.1)and median Hepascore was 1(range,0.07-1).At fiv. years post enrolment,57%of patients remained free from liv.r-related mortality(74%AIH-PBC,27%AIH-PSC).There was no significant difference in surv.v.l between AIH-PBC and *** was a significant predictor of liv.r-related mortality(Pv.r-related mortality in AIH-PBC patients(P=0.012,log-rank test,100%sensitiv.ty,77.8%specificity)(Harrell's C-statistic 0.867).The MELD score,MELD-Na score and Mayo Score were not predictiv. of liv.r-related mortality in any *** Surv.v.l in the rare,AILDOS is *** current study supports the LOS as a predictor of liv.r-related mortality in AIH-PBC *** trials inv.stigating predictors of surv.v.l in AILDOS are required.
