Building the Capacity of Health Professionals in monitoring and Evaluation in a Public Health Institution: Experience of the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) of Côte d’Ivoire

Background: In the context of the fight against HIV, a lack of skills in monitoring and evaluating the personnel in charge of activities has been identified at the national level. It was the subject of a priority axis of the national plan for monitoring and evaluating the fight against HIV (2006-2010) that was aimed at strengthening the capacities of actors in this area. To increase the critical mass of competent human resources in the short term, the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) of Côte d’Ivoire organized monitoring and evaluation training sessions for healthcare professionals from 2011 to 2016. methods: A single case study with multiple levels of analysis was carried out, combining a qualitative survey and a literature review. An evaluation was carried out six months after each training session. In addition, the results of the pre- and post-tests and of the daily and final evaluations that accompanied the various training sessions were used to provide further information. The qualitative data collected were analyzed using INVIVO 15 software. Results: Some 89 health professionals (69% men and 31% women) working at the national level (51% at the central level, including 58% in health programs) and in development partner agencies (37%) participated in this capacity building program. most participants were senior health managers (56%), data managers (23%), and statisticians and computer scientists (10%). Almost all the trainings were financed by 16 technical and financial partners (85%), mainly the mEASURE Evaluation project (27%). Conclusion: m&E training, despite all its imperfections, has made it possible to identify m&E training needs at the national level and to increase the critical mass of national skills and to have some culture in m&E.

Sulfur is essential for plant growth and development, and the molecular systems for maintaining sulfur and thiol metabolism are tightly controlled. From a biochemical perspective, the regulation of plant thiol metabolism high- lights nature＇s ability to engineer pathways that respond to multiple inputs and cellular demands under a range of con- ditions. In this review, we focus on the regulatory mechanisms that form the molecular basis of biochemical sulfur sensing in plants by translating the intracellular concentration of sulfur-containing compounds into control of key metabolic steps. These mechanisms range from the simple （substrate availability, thermodynamic properties of reactions, feedback inhi- bition, and organelle localization） to the elaborate （formation of multienzyme complexes and thiol-based redox switches）. Ultimately, the dynamic interplay of these regulatory systems is critical for sensing and maintaining sulfur assimilation and thiol metabolism in plants.

Arsenic variability and groundwater age in three water supply wells in southeast New Hampshire

Three wells in New Hampshire were sampled bimonthly over three years to evaluate the temporal variability of arsenic concentrations and groundwater *** samples had measurable concentrations of arsenic throughout the entire sampling period and concentrations in individual wells had a mean variation of more than 7 μg/*** time series data from this sampling effort showed that arsenic concentrations ranged from a median of 4 mg/L in a glacial aquifer well (SGW-65) to medians of 19 μg/L and 37 μg/L in wells (SGW-93 and KFW-87) screened in the bedrock aquifer,*** high arsenic concentrations were associated with the consistently high pH (median ≥- 8) and low dissolved oxygen (median mg/L) in the bedrock aquifer wells,which is typical of fractured crystalline bedrock aquifers in New *** from the glacial aquifer often has high dissolved oxygen,but in this case was consistently *** pH also is generally acidic in the glacial aquifer but in this case was slightly alkaline (median =7.5).Also,sorption sites may be more abundant in glacial aquifer deposits than in fractured bedrock which may contribute to lower arsenic *** groundwater ages were less than 50 years old in all three wells and correlated with conservative tracer concentrations,such as chloride;however,mean age was not directly correlated with arsenic *** concentrations at KFW-87 did correlate with water levels,in addition,there was a seasonal pattern,which suggests that either the timing of or multiple sampling efforts may be important to define the full range of arsenic concentrations in domestic bedrock *** geochemically reduced conditions and alkaline pHs are common to both bedrock and glacial aquifer wells in this study,groundwater age correlates less strongly with arsenic concentrations than geochemical *** also is evidence of direct hydraulic connection between the glacial and bedrock aquifers,which can influe

This article is concerned with the initial boundary value problem for a nonconservative system of hyperbolic equation appearing in elastodynamics in the space time domain x 〉 0, t 〉 0. The number of boundary conditions, to be prescribed at the boundary x = 0,depends on the number of characteristics entering the domain. Because our system is nonlinear, the characteristic speeds depends on the unknown and the direction of the characteristics curves are known apriori. As it is well known, the boundary condition has to be understood in a generalised way. One of the standard way is using vanishing viscosity method. We use this method to construct solution for a particular class of initial and boundary data, namely the initial and boundary datas that lie on the level sets of one of the Riemann invariants.

Natural regeneration responses to thinning and burning treatments in ponderosa pine forests and implications for restoration

Understanding naturally occurring pine regeneration dynamics in response to thinning and burning treatments is necessary not only to measure the longevity of the restoration or fuels treatment,but also to assess how well regeneration meets forest sustainability guidelines and whether natural regeneration is sufficient for maintaining a sustainable forest structure and composition.A synthesis review was carried out on the effects of mechanical thinning and prescribed burn treatments on natural pine regeneration response in frequent-fire ponderosa pine forests across the western United *** focus was on site-specific variability in pine regeneration dynamics,temporal trends in regeneration presence and abundance,and response to treatment as described in the current literature using 29 studies that met our evidence-based review *** showed that the effects of thinning and burning treatments on regeneration depended on time since *** thinning,prescribed burning,and thinning plus burn treatments all increased seedling density,but there was high variability among sites and *** were mixed results in the short-term(m studies(>20 years)concluded that stands can return to pre-treatment densities in terms of total trees per hectare and forest floor duff levels when there are no maintenance treatments *** studies showed the average ponderosa pine seedling presence,survival and growth found in today’s forests to be at a high density;this combined with missed fire cycles could contribute to future fire risk and reduce the efficacy of maintaining fuel reduction goals.

Seed value influences cache pilfering rates by desert rodents

Some rodents gather and store *** many seeds they gather and how they treat those seeds is largely determined by seed traits such as mass,nutrient content,hardness of the seed coat,presence of secondary compounds,and germination *** their consumption and dispersal of seeds,rodents act as agents of natural selection on seed traits,and those traits influence how rodents *** seeds that are scatter-hoarded by rodents are pilfered,or stolen,by other rodents,and seed traits also likely influence pilfering rates and seed fates of pilfered *** clarify coevolutionary relationships between rodents and the plants that they disperse,one needs to understand the role of seed traits in rodent foraging *** compared how the seeds of 4 species of plants that are dispersed by scatter-hoarding animals and that differ in value(singleleaf piñon pine,Pinus monophylla;desert peach,Prunus andersonii;antelope bitterbrush,Purshia tridentata;Utah juniper,Juniperus osteosperma)were pilfered and recached by *** hundred artificial caches of the 4 seed species(25 per species)were prepared,and removal by rodents was *** pilfered high-value seeds more rapidly than the other *** peach seeds,which contain toxic secondary compounds,were more frequently *** low value seeds like Utah juniper and antelope bitterbrush were pil-fered more slowly and were sometimes left at cache sites,and seeds of the latter species were transported shorter distances to new cache *** background density of seeds also appeared to influence the relative value of seeds.
