Dear Editor,I am *** Montolío-Marzo from FISABIO Oftalmología Médica,Valencia,Spain.I write you to present a case report of epithelial downgrowth in an aphakic *** epithelial downgrowth is one of the most feared complications in cases of penetrating ocular trauma or recurrent ocular *** progress can affect all the ocular structures,giving rise to corneal decompensation,retinal detachment,difficult-to-treat glaucoma or phthisis bulbi and many cases end in enucleation[1].Fortunately,the incidence of this condition is very low,there being between 0.08%and 0.12%after cataract surgery and 0.25%after penetrating *** infrequency means that scientific evidence is reduced to case series and the opinions of experts without there being a homogeneous criterion to guide the work of the doctor in *** these reasons,epithelial downgrowth is still a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

*** patients presenting with anal incontinence(AI)are frail,with attendant comorbidities precluding the use of complicated,expensive reconstructive *** these cases,revisiting a simple approach—designed to provide some sort of effective barrier to stool—is worthwhile where the options include a customized peri-anal sling or the use of an anal *** of an unselected cohort of 33 patients(mean age 54 years;range 27–86 years)with AI is presented,these patients having undergone insertion of an elastic band peri-anal sling between December 2004 and December *** post-operative assessment included the Jorge-Wexner score of incontinence,anorectal manometry and the Rockwood Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life(FIQoL)*** follow-up period ranged from 50 to 108 months with a mean of 65 *** post-operative complications included spontaneous disruption of the sling at the fourth and seventh post-operative day in two patients and local infection in a further two *** complications included skin erosion in two patients,(one occurring 3 years post-operatively)and breakage of the sling in a further seven *** was performed in 13 cases,and re-implantation in 10 *** differences were noted in resting or squeeze manometry,with significant improvement in the Jorge-Wexner scores in 32 cases and in all of the four Rockwood quality of life *** anal sling is an effective and simple surgical option for the management of selected cases presenting with anal ***-term data are awaited comparing this technique with other standard surgical alternatives.

The 2-oxoglutarate and Fe （ll）-dependent dioxygenase （2OGD） superfamily includes oxidative enzymes with an active site con- taining two histidines and （in most cases） one aspartic or glutamic acid residue. This conserved motif is termed the 2-His-1-carboxylate facial triad, chelates iron, and is housed within a double-stranded β-helix fold, also known as the DSBH, jelly-roll, cupin, or Jumonji C fold （Martinez and Hausinger, 2015）. The reactions catalyzed by 2OGDs （also called 2ODDs, 2ODQs, and 2OGXs） include but are not limited to demethylation, demethylenation, hydroxytation, halogenation, desaturation, ring cleavage, ring closure, and epimerization （Farrow and Facchini, 2014）.

Over the past years, significant efforts have been devoted to explore novel drug delivery and detection strategies for simultaneous therapy and diagnostics. The development of biotinylated polyurethane-urea nanoparticles as theranostic nanocarriers for targeted drug and plasmid delivery, for fluorescence detection of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, is described herein. These targeted nanoparticles are specifically designed to incorporate biotin into the polymeric matrix, since many tumor types overexpress receptors for biotin as a mechanism to boost uncontrolled cell growth. The obtained nanoparticles were spherical, exhibited an average diameter ranging 110-145 nm, and showed no cytotoxicity in healthy endothelial cells. Biotinylated nanoparticles are selectively incorporated into the perinuclear and nuclear area of the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, HepG2, in division, but not into growing, healthy, human endothelial cells. Indeed, the simultaneous incorporation of the anticancer drugs, phenoxodiol or sunitinib, together with plasmid DNA encoding green fluorescent protein, into these nanoparticles allows a targeted pharmacological antitumor effect and furthermore, selective transfection of a reporter gene, to detect these cancer cells. The combined targeted therapy and detection strategy described here could be exploited for liver cancer therapy and diagnostics, with a moderate safety profile, and may also be a potential tool for other types of cancer.

This study was designed to characterize morphometric sperm subpopulations in normozoospermic men by using different statistical methods and examining their suitability to classify correctly different sperm nuclear morphologies present in human ejaculates. Ejaculates from 21 normozoospermic men were collected for the study. After semen collection and analysis, samples were prepared for morphometric determination. At least 200 spermatozoa per sample were assessed for sperm morphometry by computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis （CASA-Morph） using fluorescence. Clustering and discriminant procedures were performed to identify sperm subpopulations from the morphometric data obtained. Clustering procedures resulted in the classification of spermatozoa into three morphometric subpopulations （large-round 30.4%, small-round 46.6%, and large-elongated 22.9%）. In the second analysis, using discriminant methods, the classification was made independently of size and shape. Three morphological categories according to nuclear size （small 〈10.90 μm^2, intermediate 10.91-13.07 μm^2, and large 〉13.07 μm^2） and four categories were defined on 400 canonical cells （100 × 4） from 10 men according to sperm nuclear shape （oval, pyriform, round, and elongated）. Thereafter, the resulting classification functions were used to categorize 4200 spermatozoa from 21 men. Differences in the class distribution were observed among men from both clustering and discriminant procedures. It was concluded that the combination of CASA-Morph fluorescence-based technology with multivariate cluster or discriminant analyses provides new information on the description of different morphometric sperm subpopulations in normal individuals, and that important variations in the distribution of morphometric sperm subpopulations may exist between men, with possible functional implications.

Large scavengers are strongly dependent on environmental conditions and carrion distribution and abundance,so season and breeding-related factors may influence the spatial ecology of species such as the Cinereous Vulture(Aegypius monachus),the largest European *** holds one of the biggest populations worldwide,but some aspects of the spatial ecology of the species in this region remain *** this study,17 adult Cinereous Vultures were GPS-tracked in order to study their spatial ecology during the adult *** average monthly home ranges(95%Kernel Density Estimation,KDE)and core areas(50%KDE)were 6543±19,935 km^(2)and 1174±4004 km^(2),*** average monthly home range fidelity ranged between 50 and 73%.Differences in movement-related variables between the seasonal periods(incubation,chick-rearing and non-breeding)were *** the chick-rearing period,the monthly accumulated distance was higher than during the other periods:3316±1108(chick-rearing)vs.1621±622(incubation)vs.1726±1159 km per month(nonbreeding).Additionally,large home range sizes were more frequent during the chick-rearing *** are two likely causes for these seasonal ***,chick-rearing entails a higher energetic expenditure by the parental individuals in foraging activities,so larger movements and foraging areas are expected during this ***,the flight is favoured during spring and summer due to environmental *** chick-rearing and warm months is a great evolutionary advantage for soaring-gliding raptors,as it allows them to cover larger areas with low energy ***,six individuals tagged as nestlings highlight the philopatric behaviour of the species:vultures settle their breeding areas 54±51 km from their natal nest(range=9–138 km).

The present paper describes the implementation of GPR 3D survey for detecting and delineating possible remains of hydrocarbon plumes on a gas station. The 3D-imaging was used for the detection of anomalous zones that were analyzed with some relevant signal attributes extracted by digital signal processing. These signal attributes or parameters have been the frequency of the maximum energy concentration on time-frequency distribution and instantaneous amplitude that could be related to the local response of the electromagnetic interaction and the presence of hydrocarbon plumes or soil contaminated areas. The implementation methodology took place at a gas station monitored with a piezometric sensor installation with soil layer information. The 3D-imaging of processed data and its slicing tool permits visualizing expected targets as pipes, tanks and installations in the subsoil exposing the anomalous zones for refined analyses. This further processing has used some spectral attributes of the signal to assess the real presence of the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) providing a new effort to simplify and overcome the current state of the geophysical methods able to assess the presence of hydrocarbon plumes in industrial environments regarding the time cost of the survey and the traceable indication of the spectral shiftment shown in the plume volume.

Background:The presence of a single umbilical artery(SUA)is a fetal soft marker of congenital *** the most common related malformations,there are cardiological,nephrourological and digestive anomalies,most of which are considered to have a vascular *** is an association between increased incidence of intrauterine growth retardation and adverse perinatal indicators,but whether this association is due to related anomalies or isolated SUA(SUA)is ***:We reviewed 96 cases of iSUA and non-isolated SUA(niSUA),diagnosed in a period of two years in a referral hospital for high-risk *** on prenatal explorations,including fetal ultrasonography and karyotyping,were *** was diagnosed when no malformations were found prenatally or in postnatal ***:Sixty-six newborns(68.8%)had no other anomalies and 30(31.3%)presented with a variety of malformations including heart diseases,urophaties,digestive,nervous and musculoskeletal disorders,genetic abnormalities and complex *** and nephrourological abnormalities were found to be the most frequent association with a SUA(both in 23.8%of malformed SUA newborns).Intrauterine growth restriction was not higher in iSUA newborns than in a normal *** allowed optimal prenatal diagnosis in most ***:The prognosis of the fetus with a SUA is determined by the presence of other malformations observed by an expert *** no other findings are made,only a routine physical examination should be performed in newborns,but no other complementary examinations are required.
