Simultaneous optimization of even flow and land and timber value in forest planning:a continuous approach

Background:Forest management planning involves deciding which silvicultural treatment should be applied to each stand and at what time to best meet the objectives established for the forest.For this,many mathematical formulations have been proposed,both within the linear and non-linear programming frameworks,in the latter case generally considering integer variables in a combinatorial manner.We present a novel approach for planning the management of forests comprising single-species,even-aged stands,using a continuous,multi-objective formulation(considering economic and even flow)which can be solved with gradient-type methods.Results:The continuous formulation has proved robust in forest with different structures and different number of stands.The results obtained show a clear advantage of the gradient-type methods over heuristics to solve the problems,both in terms of computational time(efficiency)and in the solution obtained(effectiveness).Their improvement increases drastically with the dimension of the problem(number of stands).Conclusions:It is advisable to rigorously analyze the mathematical properties of the objective functions involved in forest management planning models.The continuous bi-objective model proposed in this paper works with smooth enough functions and can be efficiently solved by using gradient-type techniques.The advantages of the new methodology are summarized as:it does not require to set management prescriptions in advance,it avoids the division of the planning horizon into periods,and it provides better solutions than the traditional combinatorial formulations.Additionally,the graphical display of trade-off information allows an a posteriori articulation of preferences in an intuitive way,therefore being a very interesting tool for the decision-making process in forest planning.

In a network environment composed of different types of computing centers that can be divided into different layers(clod,edge layer,and others),the interconnection between them offers the possibility of peer-to-peer task offloading.For many resource-constrained devices,the computation of many types of tasks is not feasible because they cannot support such computations as they do not have enough available memory and processing capacity.In this scenario,it is worth considering transferring these tasks to resource-rich platforms,such as Edge Data Centers or remote cloud servers.For different reasons,it is more exciting and appropriate to download various tasks to specific download destinations depending on the properties and state of the environment and the nature of the functions.At the same time,establishing an optimal offloading policy,which ensures that all tasks are executed within the required latency and avoids excessive workload on specific computing centers is not easy.This study presents two alternatives to solve the offloading decision paradigm by introducing two well-known algorithms,Graph Neural Networks(GNN)and Deep Q-Network(DQN).It applies the alternatives on a well-known Edge Computing simulator called PureEdgeSimand compares them with the two defaultmethods,Trade-Off and Round Robin.Experiments showed that variants offer a slight improvement in task success rate and workload distribution.In terms of energy efficiency,they provided similar results.Finally,the success rates of different computing centers are tested,and the lack of capacity of remote cloud servers to respond to applications in real-time is demonstrated.These novel ways of finding a download strategy in a local networking environment are unique as they emulate the state and structure of the environment innovatively,considering the quality of its connections and constant updates.The download score defined in this research is a crucial feature for determining the quality of a download path in the GNN training process and has not previous

Kidney transplantation is the best option for kidney replacement therapy,even considering that most of the times the grafts do not survive as long as their recipients.In the Khalil et al's experience,published in this issue of the Journal,they analyze their second kidney graft survival and describe those significant predictors of early loss.This editorial comments on the results and put in perspective that most of the times,long-term graft survival could be inadvertently jeopardized if the immunosuppressive therapy is reduced or withdrawn for any reason,and that it could happen frequently if the transplant physician intends to innovate with the clinical care without proper evidence-based data.

Coffee Leaf Rust(CLR)is caused by Hemileia vastatrix in Coffea spp.It is one of the most dangerous phytopathogens for coffee plantations in terms of coffee productivity and coffee cup quality.In this review,we resume the problem of CLR in mexico and the pathogenesis of H.vastatrix.The review abord plant-pathogen interactions which lead a compatible or incompatible interactions and result in CLR disease or resistance,respectively.The review abord Coffea spp.defense response pathways involved in H.vastatrix pathogenicity.Additionally,current measures to control H.vastatrix proliferation and germination were aborded focused on phytosanitary actions,and biological and chemical control.Finally,new trendlines to reduce the impact of CLR as nanoparticles and nanotechnology were analyzed.

Adult neurogenesis,the process of creating new neurons,involves the coordinated division,migration,and differentiation of neural stem cells.This process is restricted to neurogenic niches located in two distinct areas of the brain:the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle,where new neurons are generated and then migrate to the olfactory bulb.Neurogenesis has been thought to occur only during the embryonic and early postnatal stages and to decline with age due to a continuous depletion of neural stem cells.Interestingly,recent years have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of adult brain neurogenesis,bridging the knowledge gap between embryonic and adult neurogenesis.Here,we discuss the current status of adult brain neurogenesis in light of what we know about neural stem cells.In this notion,we talk about the importance of intra cellular signaling molecules in mobilizing endogenous neural stem cell prolife ration.Based on the current understanding,we can declare that these molecules play a role in targeting neurogenesis in the mature brain.However,to achieve this goal,we need to avoid the undesired proliferation of neural stem cells by controlling the necessary checkpoints,which can lead to tumorigenesis and prove to be a curse instead of a blessing or hope.

New therapeutic strategy with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory hepatopulmonary syndrome after liver transplant: A case report

BACKGROUND Due to the lack of published literature about treatment of refractory hepatopulmonary syndrome(HPS)after liver transplant(LT),this case adds information and experience on this issue along with a treatment with positive outcomes.HPS is a complication of end-stage liver disease,with a 10%-30%incidence in cirrhotic patients.LT can reverse the physiopathology of this process and restore normal oxygenation.However,in some cases,refractory hypoxemia persists,and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECmO)can be used as a rescue therapy with good results.CASE SUmmARY A 59-year-old patient with alcohol-related liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension was included in the LT waiting list for HPS.He had good liver function(model for End-Stage Liver Disease score 12,Child-Pugh class B7).He had pulmonary fibrosis and a mild restrictive respiratory pattern with a basal oxygen saturation of 82%.The macroaggregated albumin test result was>30.Spirometry demonstrated a forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV1)of 78%,forced vital capacity(FVC)of 74%,FEV1/FVC ratio of 81%,diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide of 42%,and carbon monoxide transfer coefficient of 57%.He required domiciliary oxygen at 2 L/min(16 h/d).The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)and extubated in the first 24 h,needing high-flow therapy and non-invasive ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide afterwards.Reintubation was needed after 72 h.Due to the non-response to supportive therapies,installation of ECmO was decided with progressive recovery after 9 d.Extubation was possible on the tenth day,maintaining a high-flow nasal cannula and de-escalating to conventional oxygen therapy after 48 h.He was discharged from ICU on postoperative day(POD)20 with a 90%-92%oxygen saturation.Steroid recycling was needed twice for acute rejection.The patient was discharged from hospital on POD 27 with no symptoms,with an 89%-90%oxygen saturation.CONCLUSION Due to the favorable results observed,ECmO could become the central axis of treatment of HPS and ref

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the model predictive control(mPC)of doubly fed induction generators(DFIG)in wind energy conversion systems(WECS);in particular the mPC of the rotor side converter.The general principle of prevalent mPC strategies is discussed to introduce the theoretical framework in the first place.Furthermore,mainstream and high-performance mPC methods of DFIGs have been identified as model predictive current control(mPCC),model predictive torque control(mPTC),and model predictive power control(mPPC).Starting from analyzing dynamic models,these mPC strategies are investigated in terms of operating principles and technical developments.The paper further investigates implementation of mPC strategies in unbalanced grids.Based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of several case studies,performance of various mPC schemes is compared and their special features are identified.Guidelines for designing mPC strategies of DFIGs in WECS are provided.

Root hairs(RHs)emerge as cylindrical cell protrusions from the root epidermis in a polar manner,and these outgrows increase the rhizosphere space to acquire water and nutrients,anchor the plant,and interact with various soil microorganisms.Auxin is one of the key hormones to promote RH growth,and high levels of auxin are directly promoted by low levels of macronutrients in the soil,such as phosphate(Bhosale et al.,2018)and nitrates(Jia et al.,2023).The nutritional signals for roots,which rapidly change in both time and place within the soil,are tightly linked to signaling pathways that execute swifts on cellular processes to adjust to a challenging environment.Plant rapid alkalinization factors(RALFs)are peptides that are released outside the cell and act as peptide-hormone signals.They attach to the extracellular domains of members of the Catharanthus roseus RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE 1-LIKE family,specifically FERONIA(FER)in conjunction with its co-receptor LORELEI-LIKE-GPIANCHORED PROTEIN 1.
