Polyphenolic composition, antibacterial, modulator and neuroprotective activity of Tarenaya spinosa(Jacq.) Raf.(Cleomaceae)

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity and neuroprotective capacity of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Tarenaya spinosa(T. spinosa) as well as to determine and quantify some of its polyphenols by high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection(HPLC-DAD). Methods: The bacterial Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, grown in Heart Agar Infusion, were tested. The drugs gentamicin, norfloxacin and imipenem were used to evaluate the modulating or antagonistic capacity of the T. spinosa extracts. The extract was analysed by HPLC-DAD to determine the main phenolic compounds. For the cell viability tests, individual heads of the Nauphoeta cinerea arthropod model were removed, homogenized in Trifluoromethyl ketone and centrifuged afterwards. Subsequently, 20 μL of NaN O2 were added to the biological material, except in the control group, to evaluate the protection capacity of the extracts. The homogenate of the insect heads was incubated for 2 h in tubes containing tetrazolium bromide. Results: HPLC-DAD demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of T. spinosa presented caffeic acid as the major compound. The ethanolic extract also showed neuroprotective effects at concentrations ≥ 10 μg/mL, while aqueous extract was shown to have a protective effect only at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. The aqueous extract demonstrated a clinically relevant antibacterial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus multidrug resistant strain-MDR, with MIC 512 μg/m L. However, when the extracts were associated with gentamicin and imipenem, a synergism was detected against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli MDR strains. Conclusions: Although it does not present an antibacterial action, the extracts of T. spinosa can be used in the pharmaceutical industries since its extracts show modulating action of drugs. Besides, these natural products have neuroprotective capacity.

To understand the influence of environmental factors on the metabolic diversity of phytochemical compounds from extracts of leaves and bark of Anacardium occidentale,collected in two different geographic areas,ultra-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used,as well as the composition of physicochemical properties of both soils at the collection site(“Lavras da Mangabeira”and“Crato”).It was possible to observe physicochemical differences between the soils of the two collection areas and some *** present granulometry with a sandy texture,with high values of total sand,with acid pH,and variation in porosity *** micronutrients with the highest accumulation in the soil,with emphasis on the predominance of P(Phosphorus)and Al(Aluminium)mainly in the 20-40 cm layer in ***-three phytochemical compounds were identified in the leaf and bark extracts,of which 28 were present in the leaves and 20 in the bark *** this total,13 were present in at least one of the parts of the plant(leaf or bark),and most were present in both Crato and Lavras da Mangabeira,presenting mainly phenolic acids,flavonoids and tannins in all extracts *** extracts showed similarities between the groups of *** together,this study may be relevant to assess environmental influences on the production of secondary metabolites.

Among the factors thar may influence parasitism are ecological and phylogenetic aspects(Krasnov et al.2005),where a host species may acquire a parasite by contact with other hosts co-occurring in a given environment or because of its ancestor(Hoberg and Brooks 2008).Thus,the parasite community can be considered a reflection of the ecological characteristics and the phylogeny of the host(Krasnov et al.2005).

Analysing vaccine efficacy evaluated in phase 3 clinical trials carried out during outbreaks

In this paper we examine several definitions of vaccine efficacy(VE)that we found in the literature,for diseases that express themselves in outbreaks,that is,when the force of infection grows in time,reaches a maximum and then *** fact that the disease occurs in outbreaks results in several problems that we *** propose a mathematical model that allows the calculation of VE for several *** trials usually needs a large number of volunteers that must be ***,all volunteers should be enrolled in approximately the same time,but this is generally impossible for logistic reasons and they are enrolled in a fashion that can be replaced by a continuous density function(for example,a Gaussian function).The outbreak can also be replaced by a continuous density function,and the use of these density functions simplifies the ***,for example Gaussian functions,one of the problems one can immediately notice is that the peak of the two curves do not occur at the same *** model allows us to conclude:First,the calculated vaccine efficacy decreases when the force of infection increases;Second,the calculated vaccine efficacy decreases when the gap between the peak in the force of infection and the peak in the enrollment rate increases;Third,different trial protocols can be simulated with this model;different vaccine efficacy definitions can be calculated and in our simulations,all result are approximately the *** final,and perhaps most important conclusion of our model,is that vaccine efficacy calculated during outbreaks must be carefully examined and the best way we can suggest to overcome this problem is to stratify the enrolled volunteer's in a cohort-by-cohort basis and do the survival analysis for each cohort,or apply the Cox proportional hazards model for each cohort.

This study aims to investigate the toxicity and possible effects and mechanism of action of the essential oil obtained from the Piper tuberculatum Jacq.‘s fruit(EOPT)on the central nervous system(CNS)of *** the Hippocratic test,it was observed ambulation reduction,sedation,piloerection and mortality of 25%at the dose of 1000 mg/kg and 50%at the dose of 5000 mg/*** results found demonstrate that the EOPT is endowed with a possible depressant effect,and is characterized by a likely sedative(open field test),anxiolytic-like(elevated plus maze test),anticonvulsant(pentylenetetrazole-induced seizure test)and hypnotic action(pentobarbital-induced sleeping time).These effects may possibly occur due to the interaction between the monoterpenes,present in its essential oil,and the GABAergic pathway confirmed by reversion of the effects by ***,these results demonstrate the therapeutic potential and the validation of the ethnopharmacological use of this species in the treatment of disorders affecting the central nervous system.

Hypolactasia is associated with insulin resistance in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

AIM To assess lactase gene(LCT)-13910C>T polymorphisms in Brazilian non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) patients in comparison with healthy *** This was a transverse observational clinical study with NAFLD patients who were followed at the Hepatology Outpatient Unit of the Hospital das Clínicas, S?o Paulo, Brazil. The polymorphism of lactase non-persistence/lactase persistence(LCT-13910C>T) was examined by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique in 102 liver biopsy-proven NAFLD patients(steatosis in 9 and NASH in 93) and compared to those of 501 unrelated healthy volunteers. Anthropometric, clinical, biochemical and liver histology data were analyzed. Continuous variables were compared using the t or Mann-Whitney tests, and categorical data were compared with the Fisher's exact test. Univariate logistic regression and multivariate logistic regression adjusted for gender and age were *** No differences in the LCT-13910 genotype frequencies were noted between the NAFLD patients(66.67% of the patients with steatosis were CC, 33.33% were CT, and none were TT; 55.91% of the patients with NASH were CC, 39.78% were CT, and 4.3% were TT; P = 0.941) and the healthy controls(59.12% were CC, 35.67% were CT, and 5.21% were TT) or between the steatosis and NASH patients. That is, the distribution of the lactase non-persistence/lactase persistence polymorphism(LCT-13910C>T) in the patients with NAFLD was equal to that in the general population. In the NASH patients, the univariate analysis revealed that the lactase nonpersistence(low lactase activity or hypolactasia) phenotype was associated with higher insulin levels(23.47 ± 15.94 μU/m L vs 15.8 ± 8.33 μU/m L, P = 0.027) and a higher frequency of insulin resistance(91.84% vs 72.22%, P = 0.02) compared with the lactase persistence phenotype. We present numerical studies on the switching characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with modulation in the third order nonlinear index of refraction along it’s length. The FBG is operating in a continuous wave regime (CW). This study was done taking into account the possible asymmetry brought by the non harmonic modulation of the nonlinearity, leading to different reflection and transmission characteristics, that depend on the direction of propagation along the modulated nonlinear FBG. This phenomenon may be useful for applications like an optical isolator. It was found that for a set of values of the modulation parameter, the FBG can exhibit multistable states. The numerical studies were obtained starting from the coupled-mode equations solved from the coupled-mode theory and simulated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method.

A numerical simulation study of the performance of encoding and decoding of short optical pulse in OCDMA (Optical Code Division Multiple Access) systems under non-linear optical effects is presented. The performance of encoding and decoding short pulses is obtained through use of device FBG (fiber Bragg grating) where the codes are inserted through discrete jumps in the optical phase (±π). The multiuser interference is also the object of the present study, where a figure of merit (interference figure) is used to quantify the interference in multiuser auto and cross correlation. We evaluate the dependence of the multiuser interference for the coupling constant of FBG. Finally, the interference inserted in the autocorrelation due to nonlinear effects generated in the nonlinear switching of the coded pulse in a dual core nonlinear directional coupler is examined, where temporal broadening of pulses decoded is observed.

In this paper we report for the first time the presence of bistability in an acoustic-optic tunable filter (AOTF) operating with ultrashort (2 ps) optical light pulses. The results for the study of bistability has shown the dependence of the hysteresis curve with the product of the coupling constant (κ) by the length of the device (ξL) and the conversion power-coupling constant factor (G). The range of bistability varies significantly with both G and with κξL parameters. The variation of κξL directly increases the size of the range of bistability hysteresis while the increase in G causes the bistability to occur at low powers. The phenomenon of optical bistability (OB) is the object of increasing interest due to its possibilities for important device applications. A bistable device is a device with a capability to generate two different outputs for a given input and the physical requirements for this are an intensity-dependence refractive index and an optical feedback mechanism.

Objective:To investigate the in vitro antimicrobial potential of extracts of stem,leaves,flowers,pods and seeds of Moringu okifera(***) against Vibrio *** hatchery water and the prawn Mmrobrachium ***:The ethanol extracts of stem,leaves,pods and seeds and chloroform extract of flowers of *** were tested against Vibrio cholerue(***) serogroups non-O1/non-O139(n=4).Vibrio vulnificus(n=l) and Vibrio mimicus(n=1).Escherichia coli(***)(ATCC(?) 25922) was used as quality *** species were obtained from Macmbrachium amazonicum prawns and from hatchery water from prawn *** Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) was determined by broth microdilution ***:The best result was obtained with the ethanol extract of pods,which inhibited three strains of the ***,Vibrio vulnificus,Vibrio minimis and ***(MIC range 0.312-5.000 mg/mL).The chloroform extract of flowers was effective against all *** strains and ***(MIC range 0.625-1.250 mg/mL).However,the ethanol extracts of stem and seeds showed low effectiveness in inhibiting the bacterial ***:The extracts of pods,flowers and leaves of *** have potential for the control of Vibrio *** studies are necessary to isolate the bioaetive compounds responsible for this antimicrobial activity.
