Biomarkers and Echocardiography in the Postoperative Course of Pulmonary Resection Surgery

Background: The existence of different degrees of inflammatory reaction and right ventricular dysfunction after pulmonary resection is well known, though its detection and clinical relevance have not been sufficiently evaluated. The introduction of new biomarkers, particularly brain natriuretic peptide (BnP) and its prohormone (proBnP), together with dynamic imaging techniques such as echocardiography, could prove useful in assessing such response. The aim of this study is to describe the kinetic curve of these biomarkers during uncomplicated pulmonary resection surgery. Furthemore we have studied the right ventricular function by echocardiography in these patients Methods: demographic data, antecedents and certain perioperative parameters, as well as plasma proBnP, troponin T and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, were recorded in 38 patients who underwent pneumonectomy (n= 13 ) and lobectomy (n=25), before and 24, 48 and 72 hours after the operation. A transthoracic echocardiogram was carried out preoperatively and 72 hours after surgery. Results: ProBnP showed a significant increase 24 hours after surgery, with a maximum peak after 72 hours (pncreased after 24 hours, with an inflammatory peak after 48 hours (pnitude of the increase in proBnP and CRP was independent of the extent of resection (pneumonectomy versus lobectomy). Echocardiography showed a slight yet statistically significant decrease in right ventricular function (determined by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, TAPSE) in the pneumonectomy subgroup (p=0.01). Conclusion: The plasma proBnP elevation curve allows simple evaluation of the degree and time course of right ventricular dysfunction in the immediate postoperative period of uncomplicated pulmonary resection surgery. Irbesartan (IBS) is a tetrazole derivative and antihypertensive drug that has two interconvertible structures, 1H- and 2H-tautomers. The difference between them lies in the protonation of the tetrazole ring. In the solid-state, both tautomers can be isolated as crystal forms A (1H-tautomer) and B (2H-tautomer). Studies have reported that IBS is a polymorphic system and its forms A and B are related monotropically. These reports indicate form B as the most stable and less soluble form. Therefore, the goal of this contribution is to demonstrate through a complete solid-state characterization, thermodynamic study and dissolution properties that the IBS forms are desmotropes that are not related monotropically. However, the intention is also to call attention to the importance of conducting strict chemical and in solid-state quality controls on the IBS raw materials. Hence, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman spectroscopy (RS) at ambient and non-ambient conditions, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), hot stage microscopy (HSM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were applied. Furthermore, intrinsic dissolution rate (IDR) and structural stability studies at 98% relative humidity (RH), 25℃ and 40 ℃ were conducted as well. The results show that in fact, form A is approximately four-fold more soluble than form B. In addition, both IBS forms are stable at ambient conditions. nevertheless, structural and/or chemical instability was observed in form B at 40℃ and 98% RH. IBS has been confirmed as a desmotropic system rather than a polymorphic one. Consequently, forms A and B are not related monotropically.

The impact of forest microhabitats on physiochemical properties of the soil and that of microbial communities on tropical soils remain poorly *** elucidate the effect of tropical forest stand on leaf litter and soil microbial communities,we studied enzyme activities,microbial biomass,and diversity in three distinct microhabitats in terms of plant richness,diameter at breast height(DBH),and physiochemical properties of soil and litter,each associated with a different Vanilla *** the soil,positive correlations were found between electrical conductivity(EC)and total organic carbon(TOC)with phosphatase activity,and between nitrogen(n)and water-soluble carbon(WSC)content with urease activity(UA).In the litter,the water content was positively correlated with bacterial and fungal biomass,and n and WSC contents were positively correlated with fungal *** correlations were found between plant richness and UA in the soil,plant richness and fungal biomass in the soil and litter,and DBH and fungal biomass in the *** sequencing revealed differences between microhabitats in the relative abundance of some fungal and bacterial taxa and in the bacterial community composition of both litter and *** richness and diversity were different between microhabitats,and,in litter samples,they were negatively correlated with DBH and plant richness,*** contrast,none of the soil and litter physiochemical properties were significantly correlated with microbial *** results show that significant shifts in enzyme activity,microbial biomass,and diversity in the microhabitats were driven by key abiotic and biotic factors depending on the soil or litter sample type.

An enormous development is experimented on the porous materials. The porous was considered a defect on solid materials some years ago, but right now, this defect is an advantage, based on the properties obtained from a micro and mesoporous materials. Microporous, mesoporous and macroporous materials with an uniformed pore distribution offer new properties, such as absorption, adsorption, exchange separation, and catalysis of different compounds, also they can play different roles as hosts for a nanocomposite materials to modify or improve their properties. Today, the structural types of open framework porous compounds have rapidly increased by their unique structural properties, porous size window and accessible void space are critical factors on a medical application.

Gram-negative bacilli Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important pathogen in hospitalized patients, contributing to their morbidity and mortality due to its multiple resistance mechanisms. Therefore, as therapeutic options become restricted, the search for new agents is a priority. Latterly an accelerated increase in frequency of multidrug-resistant clinical strains has severely limited the availability of therapeutic options. Several in vitro and in vitro studies evaluating the efficacy of different antimicrobials agents and development of vaccines against P. aeruginosa have been reported as novel approaches, such as inhibition of virulence factor expression or inhibition of their metabolic pathways.

The need to have an express regulation covering nanotechnology has been the subject of debate in the scientific literature and identified as one of the main subsets of nanotechnology field research. However, most countries still do not have regulatory framework in order to guarantee consumer safety. This is the case of Costa Rica, one of the most promising countries in Latin America in terms of biotechnology and nanotechnology. This article presents a statistical study about the position of industry, academia and government institutions on the need to expressly regulate nanotechnology in Costa Rica. A qualitative study consisting of a survey of 79 forms was done to individuals representing the community involved with nanotechnology and institutions responsible for ensuring the safety of the citizen’s health, to conclude that the nanotechnology regulation should be created to protect the consumer in Costa Rica. The research also proposes aspects that should be taken into account in its drafting as well as the variables on which decisions should be made to authorize the commercialization of nanomaterials based on the findings of the literature.

The present review discusses the principal topics about nanobiotechnology, such as generalities, applications, aspects that can be improved and perspectives, beside its influence in the agriculture industry.

During the last decade an enormous research effort has been deployed with respect to porous materials. design, pore size, shape, morphology and density are crucial features for increasing the surface area of silicone materials, aiming for a better biological response so cells can adhere and grow. Many medical applications utilize polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in medical implants, despite its hydrophobic surface that does not stimulate cellular adhesion. Porosity and morphology are important factors in the wettability of PDMS, but modifying the hydrophobic surface functionalization is required. To achieve this goal, the use of coatings with gold and silver nanoparticles or nanofilms can be used as a strategy to improve biocompatibility. This is due to the effect on mammalian cell adhesion and proliferation related to gold nanoparticles, as well as the prevention of infections related to silver nanoparticles. In this study, the pores in the silicone matrix were formed using sugar crystals as a template agent, and later passed through a lixiviation process to form a porous silicon matrix. next, the matrix was placed inside a colloidal suspension;a process that allowed the immobilization of these particles on the surface matrix. A hybrid stable material was synthetized through this process. The water absorption level of the porous silicone matrix with and without the nanoparticles was determined. The water uptake of the matrix was higher when the nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface. Van der Waals and hydrogen bonding interactions account for this, promoting the retention of a higher concentration of water molecules. Higher water uptake has been identified as being a key factor for improving biological response, cellular adhesion and growth, which accelerates implant integration in the body.
