Porous titanium granules in critical size defects of rabbit tibia with or without membranes

Recently, porous titanium granules （PTGs） have been indicated for the preservation of the dimensions of post-extraction sockets, as a filler in sinus lift procedures and for the treatment of peri-implant and periodontal defects, based on the osteoconductivity and dimensional stability of the titanium granules. However, there is a lack of information regarding the use of this material in larger defects and in conjunction with membranes. The objective of this study is to test the behavior of PTGs used to fill critical size defects in rabbit tibiae, with and without membranes. Critical defects were created in both tibiae of rabbits, divided randomly into three groups： Group A （defect filled with PTG）, Group B （defect filled with PTG＋collagen membrane） and a control group （empty defect）. After six weeks, histomorphometric analysis was performed. The results showed more defect closures at the cortical area （87.37%±2.2%） and more bone formation at the marrow area （57.6%± 1.3%） in Group B, in comparison with the other groups （P〈0.05）; the use of membranes improved the material stability expressed as more percentages of the original material when membranes were used （P〈0.05）. Finally, inflammatory reactions were observed when the granules were not protected by membranes. In spite of the limitations of this animal study, it may be concluded that PTG particles are osteoconductive and allow bone growth. The PTG particles must be covered by a membrane, especially when grafting larger defects, in order to control particle migration, promote clot stabilization and separate the PTG graft from undesired soft tissue cells.

Drones are increasingly used for fauna monitoring and wildlife tracking;however,their application for wildlife tracking is restricted by developing such systems.Here we explore the potential of drones for wildlife tracking using an off-the-shelf system that is easy to use by non-specialists consisting of a multirotor drone,smartphones,and commercial tracking devices via Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band(UWB).We present the system configuration,explore the operational parameters that can affect detection capabilities,and test the effectiveness of the system for locating targets by simulating target animals in savanna and forest environments.The self-contained tracking system was built without hardware or software customization.In 40 tracking flights carried out in the Brazilian Cerrado,we obtained a detection rate of 90%in savanna and 40%in forest areas.Tests for targets in movement(N=20),the detection rates were 90%in the savanna and 30%in the forest areas.The spatial accuracy obtained by the system was 14.61 m,being significantly more accurate in savanna(x=10.53)than in forest areas(x=13.06).This approach to wildlife tracking facilitates the use of drones by non-specialists at an affordable cost for conservation projects with limited resources.The reduced size of the tags,the long battery life,and the iower cost compared to GPS-tags open up a range of opportunities for animal tracking.

Green and Sustainable Software has emerged as a new and highly active area in the software community.After several years of research and work,we believe that it is now necessary to obtain a general snapshot of how the research in this area is evolving.To do so,we have applied the 5 Ws(why,when,who,where,and what),a formula for getting the complete story on a subject.We have therefore carried out a study,using 542 publications related to Green and Sustainable Software research;these were recovered using SCOPUS.The results obtained allow us to conclude that it is important to identify key elements of the research to allow researchers be fully aware of the state of the research on Green and Sustainable Software(why);the study uses papers published between 2000 and the beginning of November 2018(when);the most prolific authors are mainly from Europe,although the Usa is the most active country,Green and Sustainable Software being a very interactive area with a good number of multinational publications(who);the top five keywords related to sustainable aspects are Green Software,Green IT,Software Sustainability,Energy Consumption,and Energy Efficiency(what);finally,as regards the places authors prefer to publish in,there is almost a complete balance between conferences and journals,with a trend towards an increase in the number of publications(where).

Aims Facilitation is a key process in vegetation dynamics,driving the response to natural and anthropogenic pressures.In harsh-grazed systems,palatable plants mainly survive when nested under unpalatable tussocks and shrubs.The magnitude and direction of positive interactions are driven by resource availability,extent of herbivory and type of nurse species.We hypothesized that different combinations of disturbance and environmental stress affect community composition in the dry Puna(southern Peruvian Andes)by modifying nurse types and plant interactions in magnitude and specific associations.We investigated whether different combinations of stress and disturbance influence species richness,type and frequency of occurrence of nurse and beneficiary species and magnitude and patterns of plant interactions;whether nurse species influence these interactions and target species change their interactions under different combinations of stress and disturbance and whether plant functional traits differ in the studied communities and influence the pattern of spatial interactions.Methods We selected three plant communities subject to different precipitation and management regimes:in each we laid a number of transects proportional to its extension.Data collected include species presence/absence,type of spatial interactions with nurse species and functional traits.We calculated species richness and rarefaction patterns,described the patterns of plant-plant spatial interactions and investigated the associations between nurse and other species in the three communities using indicator species analysis(Isa).We performed Isa and correlation analysis to investigate whether plant functional traits influenced facilitative interactions.Important Findings We found that different combinations of stress and disturbance shaped a complex set of responses,including changes in the nurse species set.Nurse composition influenced magnitude and direction of plant interactions under different stress intensities.Heavy disturbance increased the rela

BACKGROUND Meckel’s diverticulum is a common asymptomatic congenital gastrointestinal anomaly.However,its presentation as an inverted Meckel's diverticulum is a rare complication,of which few cases have been reported in the literature.CASE SUMMARY Here,we report the case of a 33-year-old man with iron deficiency anemia without manifestation of gastrointestinal bleeding.An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and total colonoscopy were performed,but no abnormalities were found within the observed area.Finally,a capsule endoscopy was performed and offered us a clue to subsequently confirm the diagnosis of inverted Meckel's diverticulum via computed tomography scan.Laparoscopic intestinal resection surgery was performed.The final pathology report described a Meckel’s diverticulum.CONCLUSION Since inverted Meckel's diverticulum is an uncommon disease and its clinical presentation is not specific,it may go undetected by capsule endoscopy.Successful diagnosis and treatment of this disease requires a high index of clinical suspicion.

Background: Long-term survival in acute coronary syndrome has increased steadily in the last decades. Follow-up studies developed in this patient clearly reveal that they are at risk of suffering a new event, placing them in a new stage, secondary prevention. Assuming this increased risk, the control target of their cardiovascular risk factors become more ambitious. In this field, control of Cholesterol levels, particularly LDL-C, has arisen as a priority objective in patients with coronary arterial disease. In this sense, management of dyslipidemia guidelines, recently recognises the role of functional food, highlighting among them is the Red Yeast Rice (RYR). Luminescent hollow micro-and nanocrystals have been successfully obtained taking advantage of the self-assembly behavior and the aggregation-induced emission enhancement properties of several bispyrazolate Pt(II)metallomesogens decorated with four terminal alkyl chains.Oil-in-water droplets have been used to confine the Pt(II)compounds and drive them to be self-assembled via intermolecular Pt…Pt interactions into spherical aggregates of about 200 or 50 nm.Evaporation of the oil phase generates highly-stable aqueous dispersions of nanocrystals that emit a bright orange light as a result of the existence of^(3)MMLCT excited states.Different methods and conditions have been tested for studying the effect of several parameters such as the temperature and the stirring speed in the final particle size and in the polydispersity index.Moreover,the micro-and nanocrystals are able to entrap hydrophobic drugs between the alkyl chains of the compounds,forming stable dispersions of drug-loaded capsules in water.The droplet method is applied in the area of metallomesogens for the first time to synthesize self-assembled Pt(II)nanocapsules,which opens a new field of study that could allow the use of these liquid crystal materials in biomedical applications.

The development of injectable bone substitutes(IBS)have obtained great importance in the bone re-generation field,as a strategy to reach hardly accessible defects using minimally invasive techniques and able to fit to irregular topographies.In this scenario,the association of injectable hydrogels and bone graft granules is emerging as a well-established trend.Particularly,in situ forming hydrogels have arisen as a new IBS generation.An in situ forming and injectable dextrin-based hydrogel(HG)was developed,aiming to act as a carrier of granular bone substitutes and bioactive agents.In this work,the HG was associated to a granular bone substitute(Bonelike)and implanted in goat critical-sized calvarial defects(14mm)for 3,6 and 12weeks.The results showed that HG improved the han-dling properties of the Bonelike granules and did not affect its osteoconductive features,neither impairing the bone regener ation process.Human multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells from the umbilical cord,extracellular matrix hydrolysates and the pro-angiogenic peptide LLKKK18 were also combined with the IBS.These bioactive agents did not enhance the new bone formation significantly under the conditions tested,according to micro-computed tomography and histological analysis.

Two statistical validation methods were used to evaluate the confidence level of the Total Column Ozone (TCO) measurements recorded by satellite systems measuring simultaneously, one using the normal distribution and another using the Mann-Whitney test. First, the reliability of the TCO measurements was studied hemispherically. While similar coincidences and levels of significance > 0.05 were found with the two statistical tests, an enormous variability in the levels of significance throughout the year was also exposed. Then, using the same statistical comparison methods, a latitudinal study was carried out in order to elucidate the geographical distribution that gave rise to this variability. Our study reveals that between the TOMS and OMI measurements in 2005 there was only a coincidence in 50% of the latitudes, which explained the variability. This implies that for 2005, the TOMS measurements are not completely reliable, except between the -50° and -15° latitude band in the southern hemisphere and between +15° and +50° latitude band in the northern hemisphere. In the case of OMI-OMPS, we observe that between 2011 and 2016 the measurements of both satellite systems are reasonably similar with a confidence level higher than 95%. However, in 2017 a band with a width of 20° latitude centered on the equator appeared, in which the significance levels were much less than 0.05, indicating that one of the measurement systems had begun to fail. In 2018, the fault was not only located in the equator, but was also replicated in various bands in the Southern Hemisphere. We interpret this as evidence of irreversible failure in one of the measurement systems.
