Recent insights into the characteristics and role of peritoneal macrophages from ascites of cirrhotic patients

Oxidative stress is a common condition suffered by biological systems in aerobic conditions. Human semen also has its own molecular guard against the free radicals created by normal respiratory process or from immune reactions. The equilibrium of the creation and scavenging of free radicals is mandatory in the spermatozoa to fertilize and initiate a full-term pregnancy. The paper is a systematic review of publications that evaluate oxidative stress in semen. The Cochrane Library, Medline (1966-2003), Embase (1988-2003), SciSearch (1981-2003) and the conference papers were searched. When sperm samples from fertile and infertile males were analyzed, some of the mechanisms that determine the oxidative stress level were found to be impaired while others were unaltered. In conclusion, the literature as a whole provides contradictory findings and it is necessary to carry out more work to identify all the enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems involved in oxidative stress in the ejaculate, in order to develop new diagnostic systems and therapeutic strategies for combating detrimental free radical imbalance in the semen.

Optimal Coordinated Operation of Distributed Static Series Compensators for Wide-area Network Congestion Relief

Relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of modern power systems, especially in the presence of intermittent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-time coordinated operation of distributed static series compensators(DSSCs) to remove network congestions by suitable modifications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to minimize the number of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power exchanged, leading to a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Then, a heuristic methodology combining the solution of a regular NLP with k-means clustering algorithm is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchmark systems, providing feasible and sufficiently optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame for practical systems.

Knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus and Self-Care Activities before and after an Educational Program: A Pilot Study

Background: Health education has proven to be an effective strategy to enable people with diabetes mellitus to manage this condition. However, few studies in Brazilian population samples have been conducted to evaluate the effects of educational programs on diabetes knowledge and self-care. Aim: To evaluate the knowledge about diabetes mellitus and the performance of self-care activities, before and after participation in an educational program. Methods: This is an intervention study, with a quantitative approach, in a single comparison group, for the analysis of “before and after” results related to an educational program focused on self-care and concurrent physical training. The study interventions consisted of 42 exercise sessions, as well as individual educational meetings, according to the needs of each participant and through nursing consultations, using educational material prepared from the literature. The sample was initially composed of 33 adults with diabetes mellitus, but 18 completed the study. For the assessment of knowledge and self-care activities, the revised Brazilian versions of the Diabetes Knowledge Scale and the Diabetes Self-Care Activity Questionnaire were used, respectively, in the two moments of the study, that is, prior to the first educational meeting and immediately before the first physical training session, and after the last educational meeting, which ran parallel to the 42nd physical training session, making a six-month interval between the two assessment moments for each participant. Results: The analysis of knowledge about diabetes showed significant improvement after the educational program and, as for self-care, there was clinical improvement in all dimensions, but only the dimension “general diet” obtained statistically significant improvement. AIM:To investigate the incidence of neoplasms in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)patients and the potential causative role of ***:We performed an observational descriptive study comparing the incidence of malignancies in IBD patients treated with thiopurines and patients not treated with these *** included 812 patients which were divided in two groups depending on whether they have received thiopurines or *** have studied basal characteristics of both groups(age when the disease was diagnosed,sex,type of IBD,etc.)and treatments received(Azathioprine,mercaptopurine,infliximab,adalimumab or other immunomodulators),as well as neoplasms *** analysis was performed with the student t test,χ 2 test or Wilcoxon exact test as appropriate.A logistic regression analysis was performed as multivariate *** significance was establish at P values of less than 0.05,and 95%CI were used for the odds ***:Among 812 patients included,429(52.83%)have received thiopurines:79.5% azathioprine,14% mercaptopurine and 6.5% both drugs.44.76% of patients treated with thiopurines and 46,48% of patients who did not receive this treatment were women(P > 0.05).The proportion of ulcerative colitis patients treated with thiopurines was 30.3% compare to 66.67% of patients not treated(P < 0.001).Mean azathioprine dose was 123.79 ± 36.5 mg/d(range:50-250 mg/d),mean usage time was 72.16 ± 55.7 mo(range:1-300 mo)and the accumulated dose along this time was 274.32 ± 233.5 g(1.5-1350 g).With respect to mercaptopurine,mean dose was 74.7 ± 23.9 mg/d(range:25-150 mg/d),mean usage time of 23.37 ± 27.6 mo(range:1-118 mo),and the accumulated dose along this time was 52.2 ± 63.5 g(range:1.5-243 g).Thiopurine S-methyltransferase activity was tested in 66% of patients treated with thiopurines,among which 98.2% had an intermediate or high *** the patients treated with thiopurines,27.27%(112 patients)and 11.66%(50 patients)received treatment

Entry of hepatitis C virus into the cell: A therapeutic target

Several receptors have been identified as implicated on viral entry into the hepatocyte; and, this interaction between the virus and potential receptors could modulate infection, spontaneous viral clearance, persistence of the infection and the widespread of the virus as outbreak. Nevertheless, the playing role of each of them remains controversial. The NiemannPick type C1 like 1 gene (NPC1L1) receptor has been recently implicated on hepatitis C virus (HCV) entry into the cell and ezetimibe, an anti-cholesterol drug seems to block that, emerging the idea to control hepatitis C outbreak modulating lipid-related receptors. Hepatitis C infection seems to modulate lipid metabolism according to host genetic background. Indeed, it circulates like a lipoviroparticle. The main aim of this field of vision would be to discuss the role of hepatocyte receptors implicated on virus entry, especially NPC1L1 and the therapeutic options derived from the better knowledge about HCV-lipidsreceptors interaction.
