Grassland bird populations have declined more than any other group of bird species in North America. Some species such as the grasshopper (Ammodramus savannarum) and Baird’s sparrows (Ammodramus bairdii) are of particular conservation concern, since they have shown negative trends in their population over the last 50 years. Their winter ecology has only begun to be studied recently and information is limited. The purpose of this study is to achieve the morphometric characterization of these two grassland species during the wintering season. The study is conducted in the Rancho Santa Teresa located in Villa Hidalgo, Durango, Mexico and the Ecological reserve “El Uno”, located in Janos, Chihuahua, Mexico. During winter 2013-2014, 135 birds were captured;banded and zoometric measurements were taken such as total body weight, wing chord, tail length, culmen, and beak depth and width. Two indices of body condition (BCI) are also calculated. All measurements and indices are compared per species and per sex. Both species are sexed with molecular techniques, determining 20 females and 18 males for A. bairdii and 41 females and 56 males for A. savannarum. All variables are significant different between species (p < 0.05). Beak measurements are not significantly different when comparing birds of different sexes (same species), with the exception of beak width of A. bairdii (p < 0.05). Male’s weight, wing chord, tail length, as well as one of the body condition indices (BCI2) are significantly higher (p < 0.05) than females’ for both species. BCI1 shows significant differences (p < 0.05) between species and sexes in A. bairdii. The biometric data obtained in this study can be used as reference values wintering populations of both species.

The use of lead in ammunition for hunting exposes waterfowl to lead poisoning (plumbism) by accidental consumption of shotgun pellets. To test this hypothesis we sampled 18 liver tissue samples of Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) collected during the 2012-2013 hunting season in a wetland near the city of Durango, Mexico. We quantified liver lead levels using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and portions of liver were fixed and stained for their histological study. Average lead concentration (in dry weight) were under the normal range (mean = 0.73 ± 0.2, standard error) which do not represent any risk of poisoning. Liver tissue injuries were not observed in the histopathological analysis, suggesting no reaction to a xenobiotic agent such as lead. Gastrointestinal content analysis showed lead pellet in the gizzard of one individual, but we could not find a relationship between pellet ingestion and lead concentration in the liver. Although the results did not provide evidences of lethal or sublethal effects caused by lead poisoning, they show a possible risk due to the presence of lead pellets in the digestive tract.

Large quantities of natural aggregates(NA)are required in the manufacturing of asphalt mixtures for pavements.The extraction of NA generates high environmental impacts that negatively affect environmental preservation and conservation.Diverse alternative materials obtained in construction and demolition processes in civil construction worked have been studies as possible replacements for NA,with the purpose of reducing these environmental impacts.The foregoing study presents a state of knowledge review referring to the use of recycled concrete aggregates(RCA)when these are used in the manufacturing of asphalt mixtures(mainly hot-mix asphalt HMA type).Environmental aspects are presented,as well as possible benefits and limitations of using RCA as replacements for NA in asphalt mixtures.However,it is not possible to establish a behavior pattern,since the characteristics of the RCA are very heterogeneous and vary from the original source of the concrete.It is highlighted from the literature that RCA has a wide potential for use in the manufacture of asphalt mixtures,since in most studies,the mixtures with these materials comply the quality requirements contemplated by the construction specifications,mainly in low-volume roads.Additionally,based on the literature review,some recommendations and suggestions are presented for future research.

We experimentally investigate deep reinforcement learning(DRL)as an artificial intelligence approach to control a quantum system.We verify that DRL explores fast and robust digital quantum controls with operation time analytically hinted by shortcuts to adiabaticity.In particular,the protocol’s robustness against both over-rotations and off-resonance errors can still be achieved simultaneously without any priori input.For the thorough comparison,we choose the task as single-qubit flipping,in which various analytical methods are well-developed as the benchmark,ensuring their feasibility in the quantum system as well.Consequently,a gate operation is demonstrated on a trapped^(171) Yb^(+)ion,significantly outperforming analytical pulses in the gate time and energy cost with hybrid robustness,as well as the fidelity after repetitive operations under time-varying stochastic errors.Our experiments reveal a framework of computer-inspired quantum control,which can be extended to other complicated tasks without loss of generality.

The nutritive value of 25 edible Orthoptera in Mexico is shown. Protein content ranges from 43.93% to 77.13% (mix of Edible Acrididade of Puebla). Fat percentage goes from 4.22% to 34.21%. Richest species in ashes were Arphia fallax S., Sphenarium histrio G. and Sphenarium purpurascens Ch. with 16.5%. Energy contribution varies from 14.05 kJ to 21.88 kJ. Their amino acids profile was compared with the WHO/FAO/UNU Pattern (1985). The total quantity of es-sential amino acids that all insects species provides was superior to those signaled in the pattern. The highest quantity (53.60 g) was for Sphenarium histrio G. Chemical score goes from 50% to 88%. In vitamins, the highest value in Thiamine and Riboflavine was for Sphenarium magnum M., in Niacine for Sphenarium borrei B., in vitamin C and for vitamin D Acheta domestica L., and in Vitamin A for Periplaneta americana L. In minerals, all species were very rich in magnesium. All the edible orthopterans results were compared with those of the most conventional mexican foods used to obtain proteins. The quantity and quality of the nutrients that these edible orthopterans allows, provides a significant contribution to the nutrition of the peasants who eat them.

Measurement of the fluorescence comportment of Bougainvillea xbuttiana flowers embedded in silica xerogels matrix prepared with two different water to tetraethyl-orthosilicate [Si(OC2H5)4] ratio molar of 11 and 5, without heat-treatment, we report the grade of biostability of compound. The structural comportment for the PSI and PSII present in Bougainvillea flower is similar to the structural comportment for these photosystems present in leaves when they are incorporated on inorganic matrix such as silica xerogels. The contribution of the natural pigment of this kind of flower such as betalains which consist of betaxanthins and betacyanins, determines their colors contributed in the range of wavelength from about 550 nm to 660 nm.

This work studied the thermostability and the biostability of chlorophyll species obtained from an extract of spinach leaves embedded in a silica xerogel matrix. The analysis was done by monitoring the photosystem II (PSII) using fluorescence spectroscopy. Samples were prepared using the sol gel method with a molar ratio of ethanol/H2O/TEOS of 4:11.6:1. Then, silica xerogel matrix was loaded with an extract of spinach leaves, obtained in dark conditions. The measurement of the fluorescence spectra was done at selected temperatures to the corresponding non-physiological regimen. Results indicate that the PSII band position remains unchanged when heat treatment temperature increases up 200°C. For temperatures above 100?C, the fluorescence intensity diminishes linearly when the temperature increases. The photosystem II embedded in silica xerogel matrix is decomposed at temperatures above 200°C.

C3G is a GEF(guanine nucleotide exchange factor)for Rap GTPases,among which the isoform Rap1b is an essential protein in platelet biology.Using transgenic mouse models with platelet-specific overexpression of C3G or mutant C3GΔCat,we have unveiled a new function of C3G in regulating the hemostatic function of platelets through its participation in the thrombin-PKCRap1b pathway.C3G also plays important roles in angiogenesis,tumor growth,and metastasis through its regulation of the platelet secretome.In addition,C3G contributes to megakaryopoiesis and thrombopoiesis.Here,we used a platelet-specific C3G-KO mouse model to further support the role of C3G in hemostasis.C3G-KO platelets showed a significant delay in platelet activation and aggregation as a consequence of the defective activation of Rap1,which resulted in decreased thrombus formation in vivo.Additionally,we explored the contribution of C3G-Rap1b to platelet signaling pathways triggered by thrombin,PMA or ADP,in the referenced transgenic mouse model,through the use of a battery of specific inhibitors.We found that platelet C3G is phosphorylated at Tyr504 by a mechanism involving PKC-Src.This phosphorylation was shown to be positively regulated by ERKs through their inhibition of the tyrosine phosphatase Shp2.Moreover,C3G participates in the ADP-P2Y12-PI3K-Rap1b pathway and is a mediator of thrombin-TXA2 activities.However,it inhibits the synthesis of TXA2 through cPLA2 regulation.Taken together,our data reveal the critical role of C3G in the main pathways leading to platelet activation and aggregation through the regulation of Rap1b.

Objective:To identify the presence of joint muscular and cholinergic systems in two freshwater rotifer species,Brachionus calyciflorus and Lecane quadridentata.Methods:The muscle actin fibers were stained with phalloidin-linked fluorescent dye,and acetylcholine was detected with Amplex Red Acetylcholine/Acetylcholinesterase Assay Kit,and then confocal scanning laser microscopy was used.Results:The musculature of Brachionus calyciflorus showed a pattern similar to other species of the same genus,while that of Lecane quadridentata was different from other rotifer genera described previously.The cholinergic system was determined by co-localization of both muscles and acetylcholine labels in the whole rotifer,suggesting the presence of neuromuscular junctions.Conclusions:The distribution pattern of muscular and acetylcholine systems showed considerable differences between the two species that might be related to different adaptations to particular ecological niches.The confirmation of a cholinergic system in rotifers contributes to the development of potential neuro-pharmacological and toxicological studies using rotifers as model organism.
