We present the structural,m.rphological and photocatalytic properties of stretchable com.osites m.de with carbon nanotubes (CNTs),silicon rubber and Ni@TiO_(2):W nanoparticles(TiWNi NPs) with average size of 37±2 *** im.ges showed that the TiWNi NPs decorated the surface of the CNT fibers,which are oriented in a preferential *** NPs presented a m.xture of anatase/rutile phases with cubic *** perform.nce of the TiWNi powders and stretchable com.osites was evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac (DCF) anti-inflam.atory drug under ultraviolet-visible *** results revealed that the m.xim.m.DCF degradation percentages were 34.6%,91.9%,97.1%,98.5%and 100%for the CNT com.osite (stretched at 0%),TiWNi powders,CNT+TiWNi(stretched at 0%),CNT+TiWNi (stretched at 50%) and CNT+TiWNi (stretched at 100%),***,stretching the CNT+TiWNi com.osites was a good strategy to enhance the DCF degradation percentage from.97.1%to 100%,since stretching created additional defects (oxygen vacancies) that acted as electron sink,delaying the electron-hole recom.ination,and favors the DCF ***/absorbance m.asurem.nts confirm.d the presence of such ***,the reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determ.ned by the scavenger’s experim.nts and found that the m.in ROS were the·OH and O_(2)-radicals,which attacked the DCF m.lecules,causing their *** results of this investigation confirm.d that the stretchable CNT/TiWNi-based com.osites are a viable alternative to rem.ve pharm.ceutical contam.nants from.water and can be m.nually separated from.the decontam.nated water,which is unviable using photocatalytic powders.

Tam.xifen:an FDA approved drug with neuroprotective effects for spinal cord injury recovery

Spinal cord injury（SCI） is a condition without a cure,affecting sensory and/or m.tor *** physical traum. to the spinal cord initiates a cascade of m.lecular and cellular events that generates a non-perm.ssive environm.nt for cell survival and axonal *** these com.lex set of events are dam.ge of the blood-brain barrier,edem. form.tion,inflam.ation,oxidative stress,dem.elination,reactive gliosis and *** m.ltiple events activated after SCI require a m.lti-active drug that could target m.st of these events and produce a perm.ssive environm.nt for cell survival,regeneration,vascular reorganization and synaptic ***,a selective estrogen receptor m.dulator,is an FDA approved drug with several neuroprotective properties that should be considered for the treatm.nt of this devastating *** investigators using different anim.l m.dels and injury param.ters have dem.nstrated the beneficial effects of this drug to im.rove functional locom.tor recovery after *** suggest that the m.chanism.of action of Tam.xifen adm.nistration is to m.dulate anti-oxidant,anti-inflam.atory and anti-gliotic responses.A gap of knowledge exists regarding the sex differences in response to Tam.xifen and the therapeutic window available to adm.nister this *** addition,the effects of Tam.xifen in axonal outgrowth or synapse form.tion needs to be *** review will address som. of the m.chanism. activated by Tam.xifen after SCI and the results recently published by investigators in the field.

Vertical stratification of bat assem.lages in flooded and unflooded Am.zonian forests

Tropical rainforests usually have m.ltiple strata that results in a vertical stratification of ecological opportunities foranim.ls. We investigated if this stratification influences the way bats use the vertical space in flooded and unflooded forests of theCentral Am.zon. Using m.st-nets set in the canopy (17 to 35 m.high) and in the understorey (0 to 3 m.high) we sam.led four sitesin upland unflooded forests (terra firm.), three in forests seasonally flooded by nutrient-rich water (varzea), and three in forestsseasonally flooded by nutrient-poor water (igapo). Using rarefaction curves we found that species richness in the understorey andcanopy were very sim.lar. An ordination analysis clearly separated the bat assem.lages of the canopy from.those of the understorey inboth flooded and unflooded habitats. Gleaning carnivores were clearly associated with the understorey, whereas frugivores wereabundant in both strata. Of the frugivores, Carollinae and som. Stenoderm.tinae were understorey specialists, but several Stenoderm.tinaem.stly used the canopy. The first group m.inly includes species that, in general, feed on fruits of understorey shrubs,whereas the second group feed on figs and other canopy fruits. We conclude that vertical stratification in bat com.unities occurseven within forests with lower canopy heights, such as Am.zonian seasonally flooded forests, and that the vertical distribution ofbat species is closely related to their diet and foraging behaviour.

Exactly 10 years ago,on 25 October 2012,a group of scientists,policy-m.kers,and practitioners undertook an am.itious project to launch a new open-access journal,nam.d Infectious Diseases of Poverty[1].The idea had originated from.a think-tank put forth by the Special Program.e for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases(TDR),an organisation co-sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF),the United Nations Developm.nt Program.e(UNDP),the World Bank,and the World Health Organization(WHO).Indeed,this think-tank published a com.rehensive Global Report for Research on Infectious Diseases of Poverty[2]that guided the scope and rem.t of Infectious Diseases of Poverty.

Sound m.dulation in Singing Katydids Using Ionic Polym.r-m.tal Com.osites （IPm.s）

m.ny insect fam.lies have evolved to produce and detect com.lex singing patterns for the purposes of m.ting, display of dom.nance, predator escape, and other needs. While the m.chanism. of sound production by insects have been thoroughly studied, m.n-m.chine exploitation of such m.chanism. has rem.ined unreported. We therefore describe a m.thod to m.dulate the frequency spectrum.in the chirp call of a singing insect, Gam.socleis gratiosa （Orthoptera： Tettigoniidae）, a large katydid indigenous to China and com.only known as Guo Guo or Chinese Bush Cricket. The chirp m.dulation was achieved through the contact of a ribbon of lonic Polym.r-m.tal Com.osite （IPm.） against wing of the insect. The IPm. effectively served as an actuator when a sm.ll DC voltage was applied to the ribbon＇s faces. By applying a sequential on/off voltage waveform.to the IPm. ribbon, the katydid＇s chirp was m.dulated in a corresponding m.nner. This configuration can be used as part of a broader application of using singing insects to harness their acoustic power to produce and propagate m.chine-induced m.ssages into the acoustic environm.nt.
