despite the great potential of cellulose wood pulp and cellulose nanofibrils as reinforcing filler in thermoplastics,its use is limited due to its tendency to form agglomerates and due to its high hydrophilic *** we describe fiberboard composites with high contents of wood pulp or cellulose nanofibrils,and a resin of poly(styrene-methyl-methacrylate-acrylic acid)used as water-based *** wood pulp and cellulose nanofibrils were used directly in the form of water *** method is based on the flocculation of the polymer emulsion followed by agglomeration of a mixture of the polymer emulsion and cellulose suspension,leading to the co-precipitation of the composite material,which can be easily separated from the water *** with acrylic polymer/cellulose fibers in the proportions of 75:25,50:50 and 25:75 wt%were *** were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA)and water absorption *** analysis revealed a very good dispersion of the fibers without evidence of agglomeration,which led to superior mechanical *** results showed the effectiveness of the methodology and the potential of cellulose wood pulp and CNF as reinforcement fillers in fiberboard composites and any other high fiber-content materials.

Mining activity in Brazil has significantly contributed to the country ***,this contribution is not always fully noticed by *** study aims to bring more evidence to this mining activity contribution,based on highly regarded development indicators,such as the HDI(Human development Index),created by the UNDP(United Nations development Programme).The HD1 was traditionally designed as an instrument to evaluate the degree of countries development and was subsequently deployed to states and municipalities(IDHM(Municipal Human development Index)for Brazilian municipalities).In addition to lDHM released by the UNDP,FIRJAN(Federation of the Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro)developed its own IFDM(FIR JAN Municipal development Index).The statistical analysis shows that the average of the municipalities with mining activities has superior development indices than those with non-mining activities,especially in the two major mining states:Minas Gerais and Parfi.

Rearing is an exploratory behavior induced by novelty, such as exposure to an open field. Stimulation of certain brain regions, including the hippocampus, induces both rearing and clonic convulsions. Brain excitability is controlled by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibitory neurotransmission through its ionotropic GABAA/allosteric benzodiazepine site. Drugs that decrease GABAA receptor fast inhibitory neurotransmission induce clonic convulsions and rearing when injected into the hippocampus. Therefore, individual differences in rearing behavior may be related to the susceptibility to clonic convulsions, which could involve differences in brain excitability controlled by GABAA/allosteric benzodiazepine site receptors. Adult, male Wistar rats were divided into high- (HR) and low-rearing (LR) groups based on the number of rearings in the open field test. Groups of HR and LR rats were challenged with convulsant drugs that antagonize GABA neurotransmission via different mechanisms of action (3-mercaptopropionic acid, a glutamate decarboxilase inhibitor;bicuculline, a GABAA receptor antagonist;pentylenetetrazol and picrotoxin, both GABAA receptor chloride channel blockers and DMCM, a benzodiazepine inverse agonist). The convulsant doses that induced 50% of clonic convulsions were determined for each drug. The LR rats had a higher susceptibility (a lower convulsant dose 50%) to clonic convulsions induced by DMCM than the HR rats, but there were no differences between the groups in the susceptibility to tonic convulsions induced by the same drug. There were no significant differences in the convulsant dose 50% for clonic convulsions between the groups for all other drugs injected. In another experiment, additional HR and LR rats were injected with a sedative-hypnotic dose of diazepam, which caused a significantly higher hypnotic effect (sleeping-time) in the LR rats than in the HR rats. The aim of this work is to determine the porosity of concrete by means of two NDT （non-destructive testing） using digital images. In one test, the images were obtained through X-ray microtomography and for another test via digital scanner. In both of the tests, the images were processed using techniques of mathematical morphology and pixel processing. For both NDT, it was used concrete samples with 20-30 MPa of compressive strength. The results for the porosity were compared with results obtained by the standard test proposed by NBR （Norma Brasileira） 9778 （2005） showing the compatibility between two studied methods and pattern method.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between meteorological variables and the clearness index for three sites in Cuiaba city and one site in Chapada dos Guimaraes city, Brazil during 2007. It described the microclimate of each site on the basis of constructive elements and their surroundings, considering sky coverage using a daily clearness index. The results were that micrometeorological values were influenced by the natural elements and construction within the surrounding site, with higher air temperatures in more urbanized areas and sites with high diffuse radiation. When determining the sky coverage, on average, the days were partly cloudy or cloudy due to two reasons：（a） during the wet season, rainfall created cloudy conditions and （b） during the dry season, increases of particulates in the atmosphere as a result of anthropogenic emissions of gases and aerosols in this region of the state resulted in sky conditions classified as partly cloudy and cloudy. Future research should aim to better quantify the measurements taken inside an urban area, considering the topography and vegetation cover. This will improve the models that support urban planning, therefore favoring the thermal comfort of areas already occupied or to be urbanized.

AIM： To evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of thalidomide on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid （TNBS）-induced colitis. Thalidomide has been reported to downregulate the expression of tumor necrosis factor α （TNF-α）, IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, hallmarks of intestinal inflammation in Crohn＇s disease （CD）. METHODS： Male Wistar rats were divided in five groups of ten animals each. Four groups received a rectal infusion of TNBS in ethanol. The first group was sacrificed 7 d after colitis induction. The second and third groups received either thalidomide or placebo by gavage and were sacrificed at 14 d. The fourth group received thalidomide 6 h before TNBS administration, and was sacrificed 7 d after induction. The fifth group acted as the control group and colitis was not induced. Histological inflammatory scores of the colon were performed and lamina propria CD4＋ T cells, macrophages, and VEGF＋ cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. TNF-α and IL-12 were quantified in the supernatant of organ cultures by ELISA. RESULTS： Significant reduction in the inflammatory score and in the percentage of VEGF＋ cells was observed in the group treated with thalidomide compared with animals not treated with thalidomide. Both TNF-α and IL-12 levels were significantly reduced among TNBS induced colitis animals treated with thalidomide compared with animals that did not receive thalidomide. TNF-α levels were also significantly reduced among the animals receiving thalidomide prophylaxis compared with untreated animals with TNBS-induced colitis. Intestinal levels of TNF-α and IL-12 were significantly correlated with the inflammatory score and the number of VEGF＋ cells. CONCLUSION： Thalidomide significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the intestinal production of TNF-α, IL-12, and VEGF. This effect may support the use of thalidomide as an alternate approach in selected patients with CD.

Comissioning of the lEA-R1 Nuclear Reactor New Heat Exchanger

This work presents results on the commissioning of the new heat exchanger of the IEA-R1 nuclear reactor in the occasion of its operational power upgrade from 2 MW to 5 MW, in comparison to the values calculated in the project of IESA design and Equipments Company. This reactor is a swimming pool type, light water moderated and with graphite reflectors, used for research purposes and medical radioisotopes production. During monitoring procedures, issues were observed on the reactor operation at 5 MW mainly due to the ageing of the reactor＇s oldest heat exchanger （TC-A） and excessive vibrations at high flow rates on the other installed heat exchanger （TC-B）. So it was decided to provide a new IESA heat exchanger with 5 MW capacity to definitely substitute the TC-A heat exchanger. The results show that the IEA-R1 nuclear reactor can be operated safely and continuously at 5 MW with the new IESA heat exchanger.
