Aims Deforestation and biodiversity loss are two alarming,closely related problems,and the main factors triggering changes in land *** agricultural practices in the western Amazon Basin are known as chakras,and their structure and dynamics are seemingly optimal for forest ***,the variability in tree spe-cies and the degree of forest recovery after abandonment is poorly documented in this agroforestry system(AFS).The goals of this study were:(i)to investigate whether the different AFSs(chakras)preserve similar levels of forest diversity,(ii)to determine the effect of trans-formation of mature forests(MF)to chakras,in particular,forest alpha and beta diversity levels,and(iii)to investigate whether native tree species recovery leads to the original forest structure following chakra *** We assessed the floristic composition in three AFSs(cassava,corn,and cocoa),the secondary forest(SF),and the forest remnants in the buffer zone of the Northern ecuadorian Amazon(NeA).All tree spe-cies with a diameter at breast height(dbh)≥10 cm were inventoried in 61 plots(0.28 ha average)representing 17.44 *** diversity was calculated in all systems to determine the levels of variabil-ity using species richness and the Shannon diversity ***,beta diversity was examined to evaluate the degree of dissimilarity among all AFSs with the MF in order to analyze changes in floristic *** divergence between the SF and the MF was ana-lyzed to ascertain forest recovery after chakra *** Findings A total of 4,060 trees(dbh≥10 cm)representing 109 species,96 genera,and 43 plant families were inventoried in 17.44 ha sampled in five systems in the buffer zone of the *** most dominant plant families were Arecaceae,Myristicaceae,Fabaceae,Meliaceae,and Malvaceae,and the most representative genera included Iriartea,Virola,Guarea,Ocotea,Cordia,Chrysophyllum,and *** MF in this zone is composed of 81 tree species circums

We derived an asymptotic formula for the number of pairs of integers which are mutually squares. earlier results dealt with pairs of integers subject to the restriction that they are both odd, co-prime and squarefree. Here we remove all these restrictions and prove （similar to the best known one with restrictions） cx2/log X with an absolute constant c that the number of such pair of integers upto a large real X is asymptotic to which we give explicitly. Our error term is also compatible to the best known one.

Portugal's first major forensic case and the genesis of forensic toxicology:10 years of research to reconstruct the event

The"Crime of Flores Street"is one of the most famous cases of poisoning to divide public opinion in Portugal in the late 19th century, and it also demonstrated the weaknesses of the Portuguese medicolegal system and attested to the importance of toxicological analysis. Vicente Urbino de Freitas was a prominent doctor, graduating from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra in 1875. He later became Professor of Physiology at the Porto Medical-Surgical School and author of a number of books on leprosy. In 1877, he married Maria das Dores Basto Sampaio Freitas, and this was followed by the death of a number of her close relatives in suspicious circumstances, notably her brother José António Sampaio Junior and nephew Mário Guilherme Augusto de Sampaio. This review aims to retell the story of Portugal's first significant medicolegal case as well as the accompanying judicial drama that gave birth to Forensic Toxicology in Portugal and prompted the medicolegal organization that exists today. This research was carried out over a 10-year period and repre-sents undeniable historical value given the rarity of the facts compiled. At the heart of this forensic case was the use of toxicological analyses in court for which the Chemist Antònio Joaquim Ferreira da Silva played a key role. This toxicological report revealed high concen-trations of morphine, delphinine and narceine in viscera and in Mario's urine. The Mario's cause of death was attributed to poisoning by opium alkaloids. Despite the strong judicial evidence, doubts still remains as to whether Vicente Urbino de Freitas was a"monster"or a victim of circumstances and a hapless martyr.

Numerical Study of Spray Dispersion in a Premixing Chamber for Low-NOx engines

The present work describes a numerical study of a confined two-phase flow under high-pressure conditions, typical of gas turbine combustors. An eulerian frame was used for the gas phase together with a Lagrangian approach to describe the dispersed phase. The computational method was extended to high-pressure environments, which are more representative of the practical gas turbine operating conditions. The results are compared with experimental data, and revealed the ability of the model to increase the knowledge of the turbulent dispersion phenomena for this type of practical conditions (high pressure and confined flow).

Generic Method for Merging Satellite and Historical Ground Station Data to Design Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) Curves in Recordless Sub-Saharian Countries

The availability of long-term rainfall records is essential to conduct a serious frequency analysis in order to estimate the effective precipitation depth. The development of the process of elaboration of IDF (Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curves for a given location requires very precise data, at least with daily frequency, obtained through the use of rainfall records. The present study presents a method used to merge historical precipitation data with the latest data collected by satellite in order to perform graphs with IDF curves in places where rainfall records are scarce. The homogeneity of the data used is analyzed in order to guarantee its statistical utility and the frequency analysis was performed with the statistical distributions of extreme Values Type I (Gumbel), Gamma, Pearson Type III and finally with Log-Pearson Type III, in order to verify which one of them applies better to the sites chosen for this analysis: the cities of Benguela and Lobito in the south of Angola. Daily rainfall data from the TRMM mission and historical daily data were used to derive the relationships between the maximum daily precipitation and the sub-daily precipitation values. From the observed daily data, techniques of disaggregation of the collected data were used, in order to generate a synthetic precipitation sequence with the extreme values in periods of time inferior to the daily one, with statistical properties similar to the registered data. Then IDF equations are established, with which the occasional storm depth is calculated for various return periods and various durations and, after them, the IDF curves are drawn for these two geographic stations.
