The South African mining industry has been experiencing increasing economic pressure. Deep mines also suffer from very hot workplaces, which leads to safety risks. These factors place stress on managers to reach their production targets while providing safe workplace conditions. The data information knowledge wisdom(DIKW) model, also known as the wisdom hierarchy, was implemented on a deep mine cooling system. This study aims to show that a simple model such as the DIKW model can assist managers in improving their deep mine cooling system's performance. The study found that the DIKW approach is a suitable approach for use on mine cooling systems to facilitate operational *** the DIKW approach to a case study on a mine cooling system created substantial awareness and facilitated a cooling duty improvement of 55% which relates to an increase of 5.3 MW of refrigeration. The results of this study indicate that the DIKW approach may be a suitable approach to optimise management on deep mines using their existing infrastructure.

The antioxidant activity of the phlorotannins extracted from five marine algaespecies(Saccharina latissima,Alaria esculenta,Laminaria digitata,Fucus vesiculosusand Ascophyllum nodosum)was *** phlorotannin groups,including soluble,membrane-bound,and extracted membrane-bound phlorotannins obtained by two solvent extraction methods were investigated for their DPPH radical scavenging *** *** the highest phlorotannin yield(14.83 mg-extract/g-algae and 12.80 mg-extract/g-algae,respectively)among the five *** soluble phlorophannin(SP),membrane-bound phlorotannin(MP)and extracted membrane-bound phlorotannin(eMP)extracts all showed equal or greater DPPH radical scavenging activity than the commercial antioxidants of butylated hydroxytoluene and ascorbic *** antioxidant potential that combines phlorotannin yield and antioxidant activity of the MP extracts of *** ***(5890mL/g and 5278 mL/g algae,respectively)were higher than those of SP and eMP,suggesting that the MPs of *** *** great potential to be used as *** extraction methods also showed significantly different effects on the antioxidant activity of the phlorotannin extracts.

Prediction of DOM removal of low specific UV absorbance surface waters using HPSEC combined with peak fitting

High performance size exclusion chromatography （HPSEC） is used in water quality research primarily to determine the molecular weight distribution of the dissolved organic matter （DOM）, but by applying peak fitting to the chromatogram, this technique can also be used as a tool to model and predict DOM removal. Six low specific UV absorbance （SUVA） source waters were treated using coagulation with alum and both the source and treated water samples were analysed using HPSEC. By comparing the molecular weight profiles of the source and treated waters, it was established that several DOM components were not effectively removed by alum coagulation even after high dosage alum treatment. A peak-fitting technique was applied based on the concept of linking the character （molecular weight profile） of the recalcitrant organics in the treated water with those of the source water. This was then applied to predict DOM treatability by determining the areas of the peaks which were assigned to removable organics from the source water molecular weight profile after peak fitting, and this technique quantified the removable and non-removable organics. The prediction was compared with the actual dissolved organic carbon （DOC） removal determined from jar testing and showed good agreement, with variance between 2% and 10%. This confirmed that this prediction approach, which was originally developed for high SUVA waters, can also be applied successfully to predict DOC removal in low SUVA waters.

Necrotizing enterocolitis is an inflammatory bowel disease of neonates with significant morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. Due to the multifactorial nature o the disease and limitations in disease models, early diagnosis remains challenging and the pathogenesis elusive. Although preterm birth, hypoxic-ischemic events formula feeding, and abnormal bacteria colonization are established risk factors, the role of genetics and vasoactive/inflammatory mediators is unclear Consequently, treatments do not target the specific underlying disease processes and are symptomatic and surgically invasive. Breast-feeding is the most effective preventative measure. Recent advances in the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis have focused on bioactive nutrients and trophic factors in human milk. Developmen of new disease models including the aspect of prematurity that consistently predisposes neonates to the disease with multiple risk factors will improve our understanding of the pathogenesis and lead to discovery of innovative therapeutics.

Changes in the quality of river water before,during and after a major flood event associated with a La Nina cycle and treatment for drinking purposes

The treatment of organics present in the lower reaches of a major river system（the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia） before（March–July 2010）, during（December 2010–May 2011） and after（April–December 2012） a major flood period was investigated. The flood period（over 6 months）occurred during an intense La Nia cycle, leading to rapid and high increases in river flows and organic loads in the river water. Dissolved organic carbon（DOC） increased（2–3 times） to high concentrations（up to 16 mg/L） and was found to correlate with river flow rates. The treatability of organics was studied using conventional jar tests with alum and an enhanced coagulation model（mEnCo）. Predicted mean alum dose rates（per mg DOC） were higher before（9.1 mg alum/mg DOC） and after（8.5 mg alum/mg DOC） than during the flood event（8.0 mg alum/mg DOC）,indicating differences in the character of the organics in raw waters. To assess the character of natural organic matter present in raw and treated waters, high performance size exclusion chromatography with UV and fluorescence detectors were used. During the flood period, high molecular weight UV absorbing compounds（〉2 kDa） were mostly detected in waters collected,but were not evident in waters collected before and afterwards. The relative abundances of humic-like and protein-like compounds during and following the flood period were also investigated and found to be of a higher molecular weight during the flood period. The treatability of the organics was found to vary over the three climate conditions investigated.

In Air Traffic Control extensive use is planned of data links. One of the major candidates is the data link capability of SSR mode *** data link capability of SSR mode S however is rather limited when using conventional rotating antennas with a short and fixed time-on-target,and a long time interval between two successive beam *** results in a high access delay and too long transaction times for long messages consisting of several ELM frames. The paper presents a method for the analysis of the cause of reply losses,and then discusses a novel approach to the data link’s short comings,while maintaining the surveillance capability:the substitution of a number of interrogators with a rotating antenna by a distributed network of(listen-only)SSR mode S ground system receivers and a transmitter. The results show that the mode S transponders suffer from a high reply loss,by occupancy due to mode A/C interrogations, and shows that the novel approach offers adequate data link performance while maintaining the reply loss numbers at an acceptable low probability.
