Determination of Optimal Hormone and Mineral Salts Levels in Tissue Culture Media for Callus Induction and growth of Industrial Hemp (<i>Cannabis sativa</i>L.)

Historically, industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) has been a valuable source of metabolites and compounds, such as cannabidiols. There is a need for large amounts of plant tissue to be grown under controlled environments, and plant tissue culture is one unique way to yield this tissue. The purposes of this study were to determine: 1) the optimal concentrations (μM)/ratios of auxin:cytokinin in media and;2) the optimal mineral salts formulation for callus induction and callus growth in select hemp cultivars. To find the optimal concentration/ratios, 16 different combinations of auxin:cytokinin and three different mineral salts formulations were evaluated. The three mineral salts formulations tested were MS salts, MB5D1K and an MTSU formulation. The top performing hormone formulations were determined to be equal concentrations (1:1, 2:2, 3:3 μM) of auxin and cytokinin. The top performing media hormone formulations for callus induction were determined to be 2:1, 2:2, 2:3, and 3:2 μM (auxin:cytokinin). The optimal mineral salts formulation was determined to be MD5D1K. Therefore, the overall optimal media formulation for hemp callus production would be MB5D1K salts with the concentration/ratio of 2:2 μM (auxin:cytokinin).

The increasing pace of urbanization means that cities and global organizations are looking for ways to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Combined cooling, heating, and power （CCHP） systems have the potential to improve the energy generation efficiency of a city or urban region by providing energy for heating, cooling, and electricity simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to estimate the water consumption for energy generation use, carbon dioxide （CO2） and NOx emissions, and economic impact of implementing CCHP systems for five generic building types within the Atlanta metropolitan region, under various operational scenarios following the building thermal （heating and cooling） demands. Operating the CCHP system to follow the hourly thermal demand reduces CO2 emissions for most building types both with and without net metering. The system can be economically beneficial for all building types depending on the price of natural gas, the implementation of net metering, and the cost structure assumed for the CCHP system. The greatest reduction in water consumption for energy production and NOx emissions occurs when there is net metering and when the system is operated to meet the maximum yearly thermal demand, although this scenario also results in an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and, in some cases, cost. CCHP systems are more economical for medium office, large office, and multifamilv residential buildings.

Measurement of intratesticular sex steroid concentrations in men informs both the development of male hormonal contraceptives and the understanding of male infertility. given the challenges of using invasive techniques to measure testicular hormone physiology, our group has used a minimally-invasive fine-needle aspiration technique to measure intratesticular hormones in normal healthy men. Herein, we present a post-hoc analysis of the safety and efficacy of testicular fine-needle aspiration （FNA） completed as part of six clinical trials. From 2001 through 2011, a total of 404 procedures were conducted among 163 research volunteers, 85.9% of which were successful in obtaining sufficient fluid for the measurement of intratesticular steroid concentrations. Pain was the most common side effect, with 36.8% of procedures associated with moderate procedural pain and 4.7% with severe procedural pain. Postprocedural pain was uncommon and abated within a few days. Mild local bruising occurred with 14.9% of procedures. Two serious adverse events （0.5%） required surgical intervention. The risk of an adverse event was not associated with age, body mass index, testicular size, or the volume of fluid aspirated. Testicular FNA to obtain fluid for measurement of intratesticular steroid concentrations frequently causes mild to moderate procedural pain, but serious adverse events occur rarely. Testicular FNA has been instrumental for defining human intratesticular hormone physiology and is a minimally-invasive, safe, effective method for obtaining fluid for research on testicular physiology and pathology.

johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) has been a leader in medical education since its inception in 1893. The influence of john Dewey on the founders of the school is evident in the design of the curriculum,which included serious study of basic science for two years,followed by 'learning by doing' in the 3d and 4th clinical years. After the Flexner report in 1910 which lauded the school as an exemplary model,this became the standard curricular structure of undergraduate medical education in the US. Since its founding Hopkins,like other medical schools,has struggled with burgeoning biomedical knowledge and the tension between time and content. The last curricular revision was implemented in 1992,and had several themes,including:(1) decreased lecture time and increased small group learning; (2) early clinical experience and more ambulatory clinical experience; (3) integration of the basic sciences to improve learning and reduce redundancy; (4) development of a longitudinal course for the social sciences,(named 'The Physician and Society' course); (5) a required thesis project for graduation. All but the last were implemented. Our students have done well in this curriculum. 98-100% pass the licensing board exams,and over 90% obtain their first choice for residency positions,often in highly competitive programs such as Dermatology,Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology. Approximately 30% of graduates are listed in the AAMC faculty roster-one of the highest percentages of graduates going to academic medicine in the country.

Based on a developed theory,we show that introducing a meta-grid of sub-wavelength-sized plasmonic nanoparticles(NPs)into existing semiconductor light-emitting-devices(LEDs)can lead to enhanced transmission of light across the LED-chip/encapsulant *** results from destructive interference between light reflected from the chip/encapsulant interface and light reflected by the NP meta-grid,which conspicuously increase the efficiency of light extraction from ***“meta-grid”,should be inserted on top of a conventional LED chip within its usual encapsulating *** described by the theory,the nanoparticle composition,size,interparticle spacing,and distance from the LED-chip surface can be tailored to facilitate maximal transmission of light emitted from the chip into its encapsulating layer by reducing the Fresnel *** analysis shows that transmission across a typical LEDchip/encapsulant interface at the peak emission wavelength can be boosted up to ~99%,which is otherwise mere~84% at normal *** scheme could provide improved transmission within the photon escape cone over the entire emission spectrum of an *** would benefit energy saving,in addition to increasing the lifetime of LEDs by reducing ***,the scheme will be easy to implement and adopt into existing semiconductor-device technologies,and it can be used separately or in conjunction with other methods for mitigating the critical angle loss in LEDs.
