This paper investigates the characteristics of a clinical dataset using a combination of feature selection and classification methods to handle missing values and understand the underlying statistical characteristics of a typical clinical dataset. Typically, when a large clinical dataset is presented, it consists of challenges such as missing values, high dimensionality, and unbalanced classes. These pose an inherent problem when implementing feature selection and classification algorithms. With most clinical datasets, an initial exploration of the dataset is carried out, and those attributes with more than a certain percentage of missing values are eliminated from the dataset. Later, with the help of missing value imputation, feature selection and classification algorithms, prognostic and diagnostic models are developed. This paper has two main conclusions: 1) Despite the nature of clinical datasets, and their large size, methods for missing value imputation do not affect the final performance. What is crucial is that the dataset is an accurate representation of the clinical problem and those methods of imputing missing values are not critical for developing classifiers and prognostic/diagnostic models. 2) Supervised learning has proven to be more suitable for mining clinical data than unsupervised methods. It is also shown that non-parametric classifiers such as decision trees give better results when compared to parametric classifiers such as radial basis function networks(RBfNs).

Magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） gave images of air jets from orifices in the distributor plate of a bed of poppy seeds. Attention focused on two features：（1） The interaction between nearby vertical jets from two, three or four orifices; （2） Wall effects, where one or more orifices created vertical jets near the vertical wall of the cylinder containing the particle bed. The results show that nearby jets are mutually attracted. Likewise a jet near a wall bends out of the vertical, towards the wall, for multiple adjacent jets, the jet lengths show dependence on orifice layout： the lengths are in reasonable agreement with published measurements, by other methods, for single jets. The MRI gives three-dimensional images of the single jets and of multiple jets, separate or merging.

Olfactory dysfunction is common in Parkinson＇s disease （PD） and often predates the diagnosis by years, reflecting early deposition of Lewy pathology, the histo- logic hallmark of PD, in the olfactory bulb. Clinical tests are available that allow for the rapid characterization of olfactory dysfunction, including tests of odor identification, discrimination, detection, and recognition thresholds, memory, and tests assessing the build-up of odor intensity across increasing suprathreshold stimulus concentrations. The high prevalence of olfactory impairment, along with the ease and low cost of assessment, has fostered great interest in olfaction as a potential biomarker for PD. Hyposmia may help differentiate PD from other causes of parkinsonism, and may also aid in the identification of ＂pre-motor＂ PD due to the early pathologic involvement of olfactory pathways. Olfactory function is also correlated with other non-motor features of PD and may serve as a predictor of cognitive decline. In this article, we summarize the existing literature on olfaction in PD, focusing on the potential for olfaction as a biomarker for early or differential diagnosis and prognosis.

Diamondback terrapins(Malaclemys terrapin)inhabit estuaries in eastern USA and may tolerate salinity of seawater for short *** North American estuaries are adversely affected by anthropogenic impacts,such as pollution,dredging and invasion by non-native *** nesting areas have been altered or destroyed,causing terrapins to nest on roadsides and artificial islands made of dredged substrate from bottom *** by non-native plants may suppress development and reduce survival of *** Barnegat Bay,New Jersey,USA,there is a mosaic of natural and degraded terrapin nesting *** investigated the effects of dredge soil and shade on the hatching success of diamondback terrapins to determine whether nesting habitat could be increased by using dredged bottom *** year 1,unshaded nests in natural loamy-sand had the highest hatching success(55.2%),while nests in dredge soil produced no *** year 2,nests in unshaded loamy-sand had a hatching success of 85.3%,whereas those in dredge soil,aged 1 year,had a hatching success of 59.4%.Dredge soil improved as an incubation substrate after aging 1 year by the washout of *** temperatures were generally cool and produced mostly male *** dredge soil may provide suitable nesting substrates for diamondback terrapins if used after one year,and may be particularly beneficial if used for constructing islands that provide new nesting sites with reduced access of mammalian predators.

Objective Pectus excavatum is a congenital deformity characterized by a caved-in chest *** requires *** less invasive Nuss procedure is very successful,but postoperative pain management is challenging and *** pain management techniques to reduce opioid reliance include the erector spinae plane(ESP)*** retrospectively examined opioid consumption after Nuss procedure comparing three pain management techniques:ESP block,thoracic epidural(TE),and patient-controlled analgesia(PCA).Methods This retrospective cohort study compared pain management outcomes of three patient ***-eight subjects aged 10–18 years underwent Nuss procedure at our institution between January 2014 and January *** primary outcome measure was opioid consumption measured in morphine milligram *** measures included pain ratings and length of stay(LOS).Pain was quantified using the Numeric Pain Rating *** of variance was performed on all outcome *** Average cumulative opioid use was significantly lower in the ESP block(67 mg)than the TE(117 mg)(p=0.0002)or the PCA group(172 mg)(p=0.0002).The ESP block and PCA groups both had a significantly shorter average LOS(3.3 and 3.7 days,respectively)than the TE group(4.7 days).ESP block performed best for reducing opioid consumption and *** opioid consumption is key for limiting side *** study supports use of ESP block as a superior choice when choosing among the three postoperative pain management options that were *** ESP resulted in reduced opioid consumption postoperatively and shorter LOS than TE or PCA for patients undergoing the Nuss procedure for surgical repair of pectus excavatum.
