In this article, we review a construction in the complex geometry often known as the Penrose transform. We then present two new applications of this transform. One concerns the construction of symmetries of the massless field equations from mathematical physics. The otherconcerns obstructions to the embedding of cr structures on the three-sphere.

Cast irons with some kinds of cementite with different chromium and vanadium contents were character- ized. Fracture toughness was determined by using an indentation technique, along with microhardness and elastic modulus. The results show that at the load of 1 N, microhardness of the cementite with 5.1% cr is 10.53 GPa, the microhardness for cementite with 9.2% cr increased to 11.25 GPa and for cementite with 4.5% V the microhard- ness is 9.18 GPa. The cementite with 9.2% cr presented the highest elastic modulus of 230.4 GPa and the cement- ire with 4% V presented the lowest value of 201.32 GPa. Cementite with 5.1% cr presented higher fracture tough- ness than cementite with 9.2% cr; however, cementite with 4.5% V presented the highest fracture toughness of 2.74 MPa ·m1/2 and the lowest brittleness index of 3.35 μm-1/2.

Aerosol observation was conducted for four seasons from September 2001 to August 2002 at five sampling sites in Hangzhou, South China, on PM10 mass, 22 elements （Na, Mg, AI, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Ti, V, cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As. Se, Br, Cd, Ba, and Pb）, 5 major ions （F^-, Cl^ , NO3^-, SO4^2- , and NH4^＋）, and organic and elemental carbon （OC and EC）, showing that PM10 mass ranged from 46.7 to 270.8 μg/m^3, with an annual average of 119.2 μg/m^3. Na, AI, Si, S, K, Ca, and Fe were the most abundant elements in PM10, most of S being in the form of SO4^2- . SO4^2-, NO3^-, and NH4^＋ were the major ions, which contributed to about 20% of the PM10 mass. The mean seasonal concentrations for SO4^2- , averaged over all sites, were found to be 18.0, 18.5, 24,Z and 21.4 μg/m^3, for spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively, while the corresponding loadings for NO3^- were 7.2, 4.7, 7.1, and 11.2 μg/m^3, and for NH4^＋ were 6.0, 5.9, 8.2, and 9.3 μg/m^3, in the form mostly of NH4NO3 in spring, autumn, and winter, and mostly of （NH4）2SO4 in summer. The low NO3^-/SO4^2- ratio found indicates coal combustion as the major source throughout the year. The mean annual concentrations of OC and EC in PM10 were found to be 21.4, and 4.1 μg/m^3, respectively. Material balance calculation indicated that fugitive dust, the secondary aerosol, and carbonaceous matter were the most abundant species in PM10 for the four seasons, as is characteristic for cities in South China.

Characterising the mechanisms of cell death following focal cerebral ischaemia has been hampered by a lack of an in vitro assay emulating both the apoptotic and necrotic features observed in vivo. The present study systematically characterised oxygen-glucose-deprivation (OGD) in primary rat cortical neurones to establish a reproducible model with components of both cell-death endpoints. OGD induced a time-dependent reduction in cell viability, with 80% cell death occurring 24 h after 3 h exposure to 0% O2 and 0.5 mM glucose. Indicative of a necrotic component to OGD induced cell death, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor inhibition with MK-801 attenuated neuronal loss by 60%. The lack of protection by the caspase inhibitors DEVD-CHO and z-VAD-fmk suggested that under these conditions neurones did not die by an apoptotic mechanism. Moderating the severity of the insult by decreasing OGD exposure to 60 min did not reduce the amount of necrosis, but did induce a small degree of apoptosis (a slight reductio

This study examined the sources,health risk and pollution status of selected inorganic contaminants such as iron(Fe),nickel(Ni),cadmium(Cd),cobalt(Co),arsenic(As),manganese(Mn),lead(Pb),copper(Cu),zinc(Zn),and chromium(cr) in representative roadside uncontaminated soil(n=72) from the Egi crude oil mining areas(Oboburu,Obagi,and Ogbogu),Niger Delta,Nigeria,using a combination of multiple models(Principle component analysis(PCA),correlation analysis,geo-accumulation index(Igeo),contamination factor(CF),enrichment factor(EF),pollution load index(PLI),cancer risk(cr),hazard quotient(HQ),and metal daily intake(MDIm)).A random sampling method was applied in the sampling and analysis using inductively coupled plasma mass *** result revealed that the mean(mg/kg) for Oboburu,was the highest for Fe(89.95 ± 28.83) and Mn(26.12 ± 7.642),whereas Obagi,had less Fe(28.90 ± 7.601) and Mn(16.80 ± 5.021),and Ogbogu,Fe(44.67 ± 28.15) and Pb(19.38± 8.731) was the second highest heavy *** order of contamination was F> Mn> Zn> Pb> Cu> cr> Ni> Cd> *** Igeo and CF had cadmium as a metal of *** contamination level was low from the PLI *** EF revealed anthropogenic sources for all the metals except for Ni,which was *** correlations at p cr assessment indicated a possible cancer risk due to cr,Cd,and Ni,and the rest of elements have no carcinogenic *** findings suggest there should be regular monitoring,source control,and integrated environmental management of the study area.
