The early Paleogene is critical for understanding global biodiversity patterns in modern ecosystems. During this interval, Southern Hemisphere continents were largely characterized by isolation and faunal endemism following the breakup of Gondwana. Africa has been proposed as an important source area for the origin of several marine vertebrate groups but its Paleogene record is poorly sampled, especially from sub-Saharan Africa. To document the early Paleogene marine ecosystems of Central Africa, we revised the stratigraphic context of sedimentary deposits from three fossil-rich vertebrate localities: the Landana section in the Cabinda exclave(Angola), and the Manzadi and Bololo localities in western Democratic Republic of *** provide more refined age constraints for these three localities based on invertebrate and vertebrate faunas, foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, and carbon isotope records. We find an almost complete absence of Danian-aged rocks in the Landana section, contrary to prevailing interpretations over the last half a century(only the layer 1, at the base of the section, seems to be Danian). Refining the age of these Paleocene layers is crucial for analyzing fish evolution in a global framework, with implications for the early appearance of Scombridae(tunas and mackerels) and Tetraodontiformes(puffer fishes). The combination of vertebrate fossil records from Manzadi and Landana sections suggests important environmental changes around the K/Pg transition characterized by an important modification of the ichthyofauna. A small faunal shift may have occurred during the Selandian. More dramatic is the distinct decrease in overall richness that lasts from the Selandian to the Ypresian. The Lutetian of West Central Africa is characterized by the first appearance of numerous cartilaginous and bony fishes. After recognising more than 25 years ago,that combustion and incineration facilities are sources for polychlorinated dioxin(PCDD)and furans(PCDF),there were developed different methods to sample and to determine the dioxin concentrations in flue gas emissions. Because all the methods were manual sampling methods,the maximum sampling times were limited to several *** spot measurements do not give reliable informations about the total PCDD/PCDF and other POPs emissions of a plant and do not help to decrease the mistrust of the residents living near to such *** continuous online monitoring of PCDD/PCDF is not feasible for compliance measurements,the continuos sampling is the method of choice for supervision of *** long-term sampling of PCDD/PCDF emissions over the whole year gives comprehensive information on the total emission of a facility and details of the emission of the chosen time periods. Therefore long term sampling with AMESA is the practical choice for continuous monitoring of PCDD/PCDF emission from waste incinerators and other industrial emission sources. The Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants(POPs) lists in addition to PCDD/PCDF also polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs)and hexachlorobenzene(HCB)as unintentionally produced POPs(UP- POPs).This might result in an increased request for emission monitoring of PCDD/PCDF and other UP-POPs. Association of colorectal cancer with pathogenic Escherichia coli: Focus on mechanisms using optical imaging

AIM: To investigate the molecular or cellular mechanisms related to the infection of epithelial colonic mucosa by pks-positive Escherichia coli(E. coli) using optical ***: We choose to evaluate the tumor metabolic activity using a fluorodeoxyglucose analogue as 2-deoxyglucosone fluorescent probes and to correlate it with tumoral volume(mm^3). Inflammation measuring myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity and reactive oxygen species production was monitored by a bioluminescent(BLI) inflammation probe and related to histological examination and MPO levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) on tumor specimens. The detection and quantitation of these two signals were validated on a xenograft model of human colon adenocarcinoma epithelial cells(HCT116) in nude mice infected with a pks-positive E. coli. The inflammatory BLI signal was validated intra-digestively in the colitisCEABAC10 DSS models, which mimicked Crohn's disease. RESULTS: Using a 2-deoxyglucosone fluorescent probe, we observed a high and specific HCT116 tumor uptake in correlation with tumoral volume(P = 0.0036). Using the inflammation probe targeting MPO, we detected a rapid systemic elimination and a significant increase of the BLI signal in the pks-positive E. coli-infected HCT116 xenograft group(P < 0.005). ELISA confirmed that MPO levels were significantly higher(1556 ± 313.6 vs 234.6 ± 121.6 ng/m L P = 0.001) in xenografts infected with the pathogenic E. coli strain. Moreover, histological examination of tumor samples confirmed massive infiltration of pks-positive E. coli-infected HCT116 tumors by inflammatory cells compared to the uninfected group. These data showed that infection with the pathogenic E. coli strain enhanced inflammation and ROS production in tumors before tumor growth. Moreover, we demonstrated that the intra-digestive monitoring of inflammation is feasible in a reference colitis murine model(CEABAC10/DSS).CONCLUSION: Using BLI and fluorescence optical imaging, we provided

Effect of Crossbreeding on Beef Production of jersey Herd Using Fleckvieh Sires Maintained on a Pasture-Based Feeding System

jersey bull calves and steers produce high quality meat;however, the growth rate of jersey bull calves for veal and beef are low in comparison to other dairy breeds. This could be improved by crossbreeding with beef breeds. In the current study, the veal and beef production of jersey and Fleckvieh × jersey (F × j) bull calves and steers were compared. Bull calves were reared intensively for veal up to a carcass weight not exceeding 100 kg, or as steers for beef to 21 months of age. In both veal and steer production systems, the mean birth weight of F × j bull calves was higher (P jersey bull calves, i.e. 33.5 ± 1.2 kg vs. 27.9 ± 1.2 kg and (33.4 ± 0.9 kg vs. 26.9 ± 0.9 kg, respectively. The body weight of jersey and F × j veal calves at 6 months of age differed (P j compared to 0.73 ± 0.02 kg/day for jersey bull calves. Marketing age in the veal production system differed (P jersey and F×j bull calves marketed at 7.1 ± 0.1 and 6.3 ± 0.1 months of age, respectively. End live weight at 21 months of age of jersey and F × j differed (P j vs. jersey steers, i.e. 0.64 ± 0.02 and 0.46 ± 0.0 kg/day, respectively. Fleckvieh × jersey steers had a higher (P jersey cattle through crossbreeding.

Chemical Dosimetry during Alpha Irradiation: A Specific System for UV-Vis <i>in Situ</i>Measurement

This paper is devoted to the study of the potentiality of the Fricke dosimeter for the characterization of the highly energetic (62.1 MeV) α particles beams generated by a new cyclotron facility, namely ARRONAX started in 2009. Such for this high energetic α beam, in situ dosimetry is performed in order to avoid radiation safety inconvenience and to earn run time of irradiation. Therefore, an in situ Fricke dosimetry protocol is developed and its reliability is checked by comparison with other experiments carried out by using the traditional method (ex situ Fricke dosimetry) within another cyclotron facility (CEMHTI) and by comparison with literature data. To author’s knowledge, it is the first time that Fricke dosimetry is performed during the α irradiation experiment. The results of these in situ dosimetry experiments show that the value of ferric ions radiolytic yield (G(Fe3+) = (11.7 ± 1.2) 10–7 mol?j–1) extrapolated from literature data can be used for this higher energy of α particles (Eα = 62.1 MeV).
