Current antiepileptic drugs can inhibit seizure occurrence but are not effective in preventing its onset. Moreover, they produce several side effects, which may impact the efficacy of the treatment. In addition, it has been stimulating the prospection of new molecules isolated from aromatic plants, with potential anticonvulsant and neuroprotective activities and less side effects. This study aimed to evaluate, though behavioural and neurochemical methodologies, the anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective effects of eucalyptol on mice subjected to the pilocarpine-induced seizure model. Eucalyptol (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o.) was administered in mice prior to pilocarpine (350 mg/kg, i.p.) and the following behavioural parameters were assessed: Latency to First Seizure (LFS), Seizure Intensity (SI) and Latency to death (LD). In addition, an oxotremorine-induced tremors test was performed to evaluate the cholinergic system involvement on the eucalyptol effects. Neurochemical tests were also performed, including determination of hippocampal (HC) concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nitrite/nitrate and striatal (ST) concentration of noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin. Lastly, histopathological, and morphometric hippocampal analysis were conducted. Eucalyptol increased the latency to first seizure and latency to death, inhibited oxotremorine-induced tremors, decreased hippocampal TBARS and nitrite/nitrate overproduction, increased striatal noradrenaline and dopamine levels and prevented hippocampal neurodegeneration. These results demonstrate the potential anticonvulsant, neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of eucalyptol, probably through a conjunction of mechanisms including muscarinic cholinergic antagonism, oxidative stress mitigation and the monoaminergic system modulation, which appears to effectively control the seizure onset.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV’s) are considered as advanced classes of vehicles, capable of performing pre-established missions without physical communication with the ground or human assistance. The research and development of this type of vehicles have been motivated, due to its excellent characteristics, ideal to the military, scientific and industrial sectors. Thus, the objective of this paper is to study fluid flow behavior past over AUV’s, without and with control surfaces (rudders), by Computational Fluid-Dynamics (CFD), aiming to obtain information about the impact of the operating depth and control surfaces on the vehicle's hydrodynamics, in order to help researchers and designers of this class of vehicles. Results of the drag coefficient, pressure, velocity and streamlines distribution around the vehicles are presented and analyzed.

This article presents a study on the impact of video frame losses on the quality perceived by users. Video compression standards, such as MPEG, use a sequence of frames called Group of Pictures (GOP), which is a video compression method which a frame is expressed in terms of one or more neighboring frames. This dependence between frames impacts directly in the quality because a loss of a reference frame prevents the decoding of other frames in GOP, thereby reducing the user-perceived quality. The assessment of quality in this article is estimated by Peak Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR), which compares the original and the received images. Computer simulations were used to show that the degradation on the quality may vary for different patterns of GOPs and type of lost frames.

In view of the advancement in the understanding about the most diverse types of cancer and consequently a relentless search for a cure and increased survival rates of cancer patients,finding a therapy that is able to combat the mechanism of aggression of this disease is extremely ***,oncolytic viruses(OVs)have demonstrated great benefits in the treatment of cancer because it mediates antitumor effects in several *** can be used to infect cancer cells,especially over normal cells,to present tumor-associated antigens,to activate“danger signals”that generate a less immune-tolerant tumor microenvironment,and to serve transduction vehicles for expression of inflammatory and immunomodulatory *** success of therapies using OVs was initially demonstrated by the use of the genetically modified herpes virus,talimogene laherparepvec,for the treatment of *** this time,several OVs are being studied as a potential treatment for cancer in clinical ***,it is necessary to be aware of the safety and possible adverse effects of this therapy;after all,an effective treatment for cancer should promote regression,attack the tumor,and in the meantime induce minimal systemic *** this manuscript,we will present a current review of the mechanism of action of OVs,main clinical uses,updates,and future perspectives on this treatment.

In carbon global cycle, the relationship between the terrestrial ecosystem and the atmosphere where there are, among others, gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect, has become object of relevant scientific interest. The content of organic matter in soil, expressed by its supplies as well as the organic matter degree of stability, are factors that can prevent the soil from acting as a drain and at the same time contribute for it to become a source of those gases. The variations in the way land is used in Brazil are factors responsible for the increase in emission of greenhouse effect gases. Based on these facts, this study was aimed to evaluate the CO2 and CH4 efflux using a gas retention chamber, and to associate these emissions to the organic carbon content in the soil. Two different areas were selected for the study, one in Tijuca Forest National Park, in a forest area, and the other at the Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University campus. In the latter, the area was stratified in three sub areas according to the vegetation, use and water saturation degree. Samplings were performed during 8 months between 2013 and 2014.

H. suaveolens （L.） Poit has been used in folk medicine revealing a wide pharmacological potential. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the essential oil from 11. suaveolens leaves in inhibiting the growth of A. flavus LM257 and synthesis of aflatoxins Bl and B2. The essential oil at 20, 40 and 80 laL/mL strongly reduced the biomass and spore germination ofA. flavus. A 100% inhibition was found at 40 μL/mL and 80μL/mL, while at 20 μL/mL the growth depressed over 50% for both tested parameters. The essential oil at all assayed concentrations totally inhibited the production of aflatoxin B1 and B2. From these results, the essential oil from 11. suaveolens leaves may be considered as an alternative and effective inhibitor ofA. flavus, in addition to offer some protective effect to the production of aflatoxins.

The present article broaches aspects related to the management of the innovation process of a small company that works in the food industry of Manaus; the authors focus on the current types and levels of technological competencies existent in the company, describe their technological learning process and emphasize the innovation system that provides the organizational development support. This paper is based on a specific individual study and on empirical evidence collected using various techniques. It demonstrates how the management of the technological learning process and the innovation system boost the growth trajectory in a small company, by the fact that they contribute to the effective development of technological competencies considered fundamental to perfect the level of competitiveness of the company.

Optimization of the Chitinase Production by Different Metarhizium anisopliae Strains under Solid-State Fermentation with Silkworm Chrysalis as Substrate Using CCRD

Entomopathogenic fungi, such as Metarhizium anisopliae, are able to control various insect pests. These fungi attack the integument of the host using an enzymatic complex. Among the enzymes found in this complex, chitinase is an important component. However, the relation between the chitinase production and the virulence from different M. anisopliae strains has not been analyzed. In this manuscript it is presented the chitinase production by four M. anisopliae strains with different potential of virulence in Solid-State Fermentation using silkworm chrysalis as substrate. The higher chitinase level was obtained with the strain IBCB 360 (7.14 U/g of substrate) with potential virulence of 68% on Diatrea saccharalis. The enzyme production was optimized for all strains using a factorial planning (CCRD) considering the cultivation time and medium humidity as independent variables. The maximal production of chitinase was obtained at a range from 8 to 12-days old cultures and from 45% to 62% of moisture according to the surface response plot, with high R2 value. The enzyme production by the strain IBCB 167 was increased two-folds under optimized conditions, while for the strains IBCB 360 and 425 the chitinase production was increased four-folds and nine-folds for the strain IBCB 384.
