Expanding the functionalities of plasmon-assisted lasers is essential for emergent applications in nanoscience and ***,we report on a novel ability of plasmonic structures to induce dual-wavelength lasing in the near-infrared region in a Yb^(3+) solid-state *** means of the effects of disordered plasmonic networks deposited on the surface of a Yb^(3+)-doped nonlinear RTP crystal,room-temperature dual-wavelength lasing,with a frequency difference between the lines in the THz range,is *** dual-wavelength laser is produced by the simultaneous activation of two lasing channels,namely,an electronic-and a phonon-terminated laser *** latter is enabled by the out-of-plane field components that are generated by the plasmonic structures,which excite specific Raman ***,multiline radiation at three different wavelengths is demonstrated in the visible spectral region via two self-frequency conversion processes,which occur in the vicinities of the plasmonic *** results demonstrate the potential of plasmonic nanostructures for inducing drastic modifications in the operational mode of a solid-state laser and hold promise for applications in a variety of fields,including multiplexing,precise spectroscopies,and THz radiation generation via a simple and cost-effective procedure.

Physiological thermotolerance and behavioral thermoregulation are central to seasonal cold adaptation in ectothermic *** species with enhanced mobility,behavioral responses may be of greater importance in the cold stress *** the carabid beetles as a study organism,the current study compared physiological thermotolerance and behavioral thermoregulation in carabid species inhabiting cereal fields in different landscape contexts,from fine grain heterogeneous“complex”landscapes to homogenous“simple”*** thermotolerance was determined via measurement of the CTmin and chill coma *** responses to cold temperature exposure were determined employing a purpose built arena,and thoracic temperature measured to estimate the efficacy of the behavior as a form of behavioral *** revealed an influence of landscape composition on the cold tolerance of carabid beetles,although species differed in their sensitivity to landscape intensification.A reduced effect of landscape on the thermotolerance of larger carabid beetles was observed,thought to be the consequence of greater mobility preventing local acclimation to microclimatic variation along the landscape intensification *** into behavioral thermoregulation of the 3 largest species revealed burrowing behavior to be the main behavioral response to cold stress,acting to significantly raise carabid body *** finding highlights the importance of behavioral thermoregulation as a strategy to evade cold *** use of behavioral thermoregulation may negate the need to invest in physiological thermotolerance,further offering explanation for the lack of landscape effect on the physiological thermotolerance of larger carabids.

Background:In-hospital mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is *** prognostic indices are needed to identify patients at high-risk of COVID-19 health *** aimed to determine the usefulness of the CONtrolling NUTritional status(CONUT)index as a potential prognostic indicator of mortality in COVID-19 patients upon hospital ***:Our study design is of a retrospective observational study in a large cohort of COVID-19 *** addition to descriptive statistics,a Kaplan-Meier mortality analysis and a Cox regression were performed,as well as receiver operating curve(ROC).Results:From February 5,2020 to january 21,2021,there was a total of 2969 admissions for COVID-19 at our hospital,corresponding to 2844 ***,baseline(within 4 days of admission)CONUT index could be scored for 1627(57.2%)***’age was 67.3±16.5 years and 44.9%were *** CONUT severity distribution was:194(11.9%)normal(0-1);769(47.2%)light(2-4);585(35.9%)moderate(5-8);and 79(4.9%)severe(9-12).Mortality of 30 days after admission was 3.1%in patients with normal risk CONUT,9.0%light,22.7%moderate,and 40.5%in those with severe CONUT(P<0.05).An increased risk of death associated with a greater baseline CONUT stage was sustained in a multivariable Cox regression model(P<0.05).An increasing baseline CONUT stage was associated with a longer duration of admission,a greater requirement for the use of non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation,and other clinical outcomes(all P<0.05).The ROC of CONUT for mortality had an area under the curve(AUC)and 95%confidence interval of 0.711(0.676-0746).Conclusion:The CONUT index upon admission is potentially a reliable and independent prognostic indicator of mortality and length of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients.

Perovskite quantum dots(PeQDs)endowed with capping ligands exhibit impressive optoelectronic properties and enable for costefficient solution processing and exciting application *** synthesize and characterize three different PeQDs with the same cubic CsPbBr_(3)core,but which are distinguished by the ligand composition and ***-1 features a binary didodecyldimethylammonium bromide(DDAB)and octanoic acid capping ligand system,with a high surface density of 1.53 nm^(-2),whereas PeQD-2 and PeQD-3 are coated by solely DDAB at a gradually lower surface *** show that PeQD-1 endowed with highest ligand density features the highest dispersibility in toluene of 150 g/L,the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of 95%in dilute solution and 59%in a neat film,and the largest core-to-core spacing in neat thin *** further establish that ions are released from the core of PeQD-1 when it is exposed to an electric field,although it comprises a dense coating of one capping ligand per four surface core *** finally exploit these combined findings to the development of a light-emitting electrochemical cell(LEC),where the active layer is composed solely of solution-processed pure PeQDs,without additional *** this device,the ion release is utilized as an advantage for the electrochemical doping process and efficient emissive operation of the LEC.

AIM: To develop a tool for detailed analysis of spirally acting anesthetic and analgesic agents. METHODS: Studies were done on visually identified motor neurons in 400 uuuuuuuum thick spinal cord slices from 14-23 d old rats using patch clamp techniques. Ethanol was used as a prototype general anesthetic agent. RESULTS: Cell bodies in the ventrolateral horn identified as motor neurons by retrograde fluorescent labeling had a mean dimension of 32 ± 5 /Mm (x ± s, n = 25). Mean resting potential was - 62. 8 ± 2. 4 mV; input resistance was 44±24 MΩ (n = 19). Threshold was -44± 7 mV, and action potential amplitude 101 ± 9 mV from baseline. Ethanol concentrations at and below 50-200 mmol/L decreased motor neuron excitability to the injected current; there was no effect on resting potential, but a variable reversible increase in input resistance. AIM To define a ten-step protocol that reduced the incidence of surgical site infection in the spine surgery practice of the senior author and evaluate the support for each step based on current *** In response to unexplained increased infection rates at our institution following spine surgery,a ten-step protocol was implemented:(1) preoperative glycemic management based on hemoglobin A1 c(HbA1 c);(2) skin site preoperative preparation with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate disposable cloths;(3) limit operating room traffic;(4) cut the number of personnel in the room to the minimum required;(5) absolutely no flash sterilization of equipment;(6) double-gloving with frequent changing of outer gloves;(7) local application of vancomycin powder;(8) re-dosing antibiotic every 4 h for prolonged procedures and extending postoperative coverage to 72 h for high-risk patients;(9) irrigation of subcutaneous tissue with diluted povidone-iodine solution after deep fascial closure; and(10) use of Dura Prep skin preparation at the end of a case before skin closure. Through an extensive literature review,the current data available for each of the ten steps was *** Use of vancomycin powder in surgical wounds,routine irrigation of surgical site,and frequent changing of surgical gloves are strongly supported by the literature. Preoperative skin preparation with chlorhexidine wipes is similarly supported. The majority of current literature supports control of HbA1 c preoperatively to reduce risk of infection. The Phytochemical investigation on MeOH extract on the bark of Aristolochia brasiliensis Mart.&Zucc(Aristolochi-aceae)led to the isolation of major compound(1)as light brown grainy *** compound was identified as 1-(4-hydroxybenzyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-6,7-diol(higenamine)on the basis of spectroscopic analysis,including 1D and 2D NMR *** compound was evaluated for its antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium indicus pranii(MIP),using Galleria mellonella larva as an in vivo infection *** survival of MIP infected larvae after a single dose treatment of 100 mg/kg body weight of higenamine was 80%after 24 *** the compound exhibited a dose dependent activity,as evidenced by the reduction of colony density from 10^(5) to 10^(3) CFU for test concentrations of 50,100,150 and 200 mg/kg body weight *** IC50 value for higenamine was 161.6 mg/kg body weight as calculated from a calibration *** analysis showed that,a complete inhibition of MIP in the *** could be achieved at 334 mg/kg body *** the fact that MIP has been found to be highly resistant against isoniazid(INH)in an in vitro assay model,in this study the microbe was highly susceptible to this standard anti-TB *** isolation of higenamine from the genus Aristolochia and the method used to evaluate its in vivo antimycobacterial activity in *** are herein reported for the first time.
