Sexual dimorphism in immune response： Testing the hypothesis in an insect species with two male morphs

It has been proposed that given that males should invest in sexual traits at the expense of their investment in immune response, females are better immunocompetent than males. Typically, this idea has been tested in monomorphic species, but rarely has been evaluated in polymorphic male species. We used Paraphlebia zoe, a damselfly with two male morphs： the black-winged morph （Black-W） develop black spots as sexual traits and the hyaline-winged morph （Hyaline-W） resembles a female in size and wings color. We predicted that Black-W should have a lower immune response than Hyaline-W, but that the latter males should not differ from females in this respect. Nitric oxide （NO） and phenoloxidase （PO） production, as well as hemolymph protein content, were used as immune markers. Body size （wing length） was used as an indicator of the male condition. The results show that, as we predicted, females and Hyaline-W had higher values of NO than Black-W, corresponding to differences in size. However, the opposite was found in relation to PO production. Females had the highest levels of hemolymph protein content, whereas no differences were found between Black-W and Hyaline-W. These results partially support the sexual selection hypothesis and are discussed in the context of the life history of this species. Black-W, Hyaline-W, and females could express the immune markers that are prioritized by their particular condition, and probably neither of them could express all immune markers in an elevated manner, as this would result in an excessive accumulation of free radicals.

Application of a Pulsed Electric Field to Modify the Free Energy of the Active Site of an Azoreductase

The Gibbs free energy is strongly related to the stability and catalytic function of an enzyme through the energetic changes that occur in the chemical reactions the enzyme catalyzes. In this in silico study, a pulsed electric field was applied to an azoreductase, and its effect on the Gibbs free energy of molecular docking with two dyes was measured. We propose that certain stimuli from a pulsed electric field favor the structural stability of the enzyme by promoting an arrangement in the active site, potentially leading to an enhancement of enzymatic activity overall.

Short-term outcomes after the loading phase of intravitreal bevacizumab and subthreshold macular laser in non-center involved diabetic macular edema

AIM： To compare the effectiveness of intravitreal bevacizumab and subthreshold macular photocoagulation （SMP）, for the treatment of non-center involved diabetic macular edema （non-CI DME）. METHODS： Prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study included patients with type 2 diabetes, non-CI DME and best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA） of 0.30 logMAR or better. Each eye was randomized into three groups： group 1, monthly intravitreal bevacizumab; group 2, single SMP; group 3, single SMP and monthly bevacizumab. Main outcome measures were BCVA, and macular thickness measured with optical coherence tomography as macular central subfield thickness （CST）, macular area of greater thickness （MAGT） and total macular volume （TMV）. Results were analyzed after 3mo. RESULTS： A total of 32 eyes were included. Group 3 improved in BCVA （0.19±0.16 to 0.12±0.14 logMAR; P=0.041） and in TMV （7.90±0.57 to 7.65±0.73 mm3; P=0.025）. Group 1 improved in MAGT （325±26.26 to 298.20±44.85 μm; P=0.022） and TMV （7.79±0.57 to 7.50±0.56 mm3, P=0.047）. Group 2 didn’t show significant improvement of any variable. CONCLUSION： The loading phase of bevacizumab as monotherapy or combined with SMP is superior to SMP as monotherapy in providing short-term visual and anatomical improvement in non-CI DME.

According to World Health Organization(WHO)estimates,in 2020,there were 1.8 million human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected children below 15 years old living with HIV and 150,000 children who acquired the infection[1].Every year,110,000 children die as a consequence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related causes[2].As in adults,optimal management of infected children depends on early diagnosis and treatment with antiretroviral drugs based on their viral genotype.

The Use of Melengestrol Acetate as a Strategy to Improve Production Efficiency of Sheep in Rural Areas in Mexico

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of melengestrol acetate （MGA） as a strategy to improve the production efficiency in ewes of rural areas in Mexico. Twenty ewes of breeds （Dorper and Dorper with Pelibuey） non-pregnant and with ovarica activity were used. The treatment consisted of the administration of 0.22 mg MGA/ewe/d for 17 d. The MGA efficiency was measured once the treatment finalized, and the producer was responsible for the registration of the estrus presentation and prolificacy rate. 95% of the sheep presented estrus in a period of 14 d after stopping treatment. The prolificacy percentage was of 1.2 lambs born by ewe during a period of six months （including treatment and period of gestation）. In conclusion, the use of MGA represents an alternative to improve the efficiency of sheep production in rural areas in Mexico, since it can increase the number of lambs by 30% in a period of 12 months.

Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome and Inflammatory Markers of Acute Phase

Objective: To determine the association between the acute inflammatory markers and Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome in our patients. Methods: A total of 44 patients were included in this transverse (cross sectional), observational, analytical, and comparative study. Two groups of patients were created. Results: In patients with chronic renal failure, stages 3, 4, or 5 (scale 1 to 5) were identified and divided into two groups: Group I (Patients with concomitant diabetic retinopathy stabilized with photocoagulation) 22 patients. Group II (Patients with progression of retinopathy, after photocoagulation, in the form of intraocular bleeding) 22 patients. The number of patients with chronic renal failure in stage 3 was: Group I;16. In Group II;12 patients (OR: 1.0). Stage 4: Group I;4 patients. Group II: 3 patients (OR: 1.0, CI 95%;0.3843 - 2.021). Stage 5: Group I;2 patients. Group II;7 patients (OR: 1.8148, CI 95%;1.0448 - 3.1523;Chi-squared (x2) 2.7450, p = 0.097). t-Test found statistical significance in Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR): p < 0.0001 (CI 95%;7.8959 - 23.2515);R = 0.56 p = 0.001;and OR = 1.959 (CI 95%;1.193 - 3.217). By non-parametric tests, C-reactive protein with binomial test showed p < 0.001. ESR showed p < 0.001 with U of Mann Whitney. Conclusions: With this study revealed a possible association of inflammatory markers with Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome.

Land Use/Cover and Productivity in the Compact Agricultural Areas of Mexico

This paper presents a method to associate land use/cover with productivity in 16 Agrotech Observatories (AOTs) in Mexico. Compact agricultural areas in Mexico have been identified, which are monitored as to their behavior concerning production and rural productivity in a network of AOTs, which is a compact agricultural area representative of agro-ecological, technological and social conditions in the country. To optimize production and agricultural productivity in compact areas, a multidisciplinary and holistic approach with four lines of activity (agro-ecological, technological, economic, and social), and ten actions are used. The objective of this work was to obtain the land use/cover and productivity of sixteen compact agricultural areas (AOTs) in the Mexican Republic, using panchromatic and multispectral SPOT 5 imagery, in order to provide information to the agricultural sector of the country, and to support decision making contributing to the optimization of production in areas with high actual and potential productivity. As an example, in this paper the land use/cover and productivity “AOT 20 Hidalgo” were described. Currently, it is important to have updated and accurate information to support actions and programs of federal, state and local government for farmers, particularly in compact areas with high agricultural production potential.

Second-look surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for patients with colorectal cancer at high risk of peritoneal carcinomatosis:Does it really save lives?

The treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) of colorectal origin with cytoreductive surgery(CRS) plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has a 5-year recurrence-free or cure rate of at least 16%, so it is no longer labeled as a fatal disease, and offers prolonged survival for patients with a low peritoneal carcinomatosis index. Metachronous PC of colorectal origin is so predictable that there is a model which has been used to successfully determine the individual risk of each patient. Patients at risk are clearly identified; those with the highest risk have small peritoneal nodules present in the first surgery (70% probability of developing PC), ovarian metastases(60%), perforated tumor onset or intraoperative tumor rupture(50%). Current clinical, biological and imaging techniques still lack sufficient sensitivity to diagnose PC in its initial stages, when CRS plus HIPEC has a greater impact and a higher cure rate. Second-look surgery with HIPEC or prophylactic HIPEC at the time of the first intervention have been proposed as means of preventing and/or anticipating clinical or radiological relapse in at-risk patients. Both techniques have shown a significant decrease in peritoneal relapses and should be considered essential weapons in the management of colorectal cancer.

Evaluation of the Properties of Healing of the Extract of Kombucha in Sheep in Growth with Malnutrition,Parasitocis and Respiratory Problems

With the objective to evaluate the properties, curatives of kombucha extract as an alternative treatment were used;20 sheep creoles weaned with stunting, respiratory diseases, parasitic and malnutrition were divided into control and experiment n = 10 groups;the first one was administered by ivermectin 1% (2 mg/kg) subcutaneous, with a reinforcement of closantel 5% (0.5 mg/kg) by oral route and enrofloxacin at 5% (3 mg/kg) intramuscularly for three consecutive days and the second group by oral route 20 ml of extract kombucha per animal each three days for about 4 months, was weighed at the beginning of each month;clinical tests were conducted and statistical data indicated no significant differences in weight gain 30.370 kg/p control, 31.290, 3.503 kg/p experimentally, some showed small differences in blood samples and in stool tests for example, control ended with Eimeria 1.00 ± 0.00, creatinine, 0.17 ± 0.04 mg/dl, uric acid 23.20 5.37 ± mg/dl, 46.12 ± 4.70 MCV, 7.21 ± 0.25 g/dl total protein, 38.20 10.06 ± 1.40 and segmented neutrophils ±1.07, and on the other hand the experimental in erythrocytes present 9783000.00 ± 1036072.17 million, in hemoglobin 13.43 ± 0.51 g/dl, hematocrit 38.87 ± 2.13, and platelet 422320.000 ± 52442.578 thousands. Both groups did not exceed normal parameters, however, physically the experimental animals were better and had no parasites or respiratory problems as opposed to controls.
