Male Drosophila melanogaster learn to prefer an arbitrary trait associated with female mating status

Although males are generally less discriminating than females when it comes to choosing a mate, they still benefit from distinguishing between mates that are receptive to courtship and those that are not, in order to avoid wasting time and ener- gy. It is known that males of Drosophila melanogaster are able to learn to associate olfactory and gustatory cues with female re- ceptivity, but the role of more arbitrary, visual cues in mate choice learning has been overlooked to date in this species. We there- fore carried out a series of experiments to determine： 1） whether males had a baseline preference for female eye color （red versus brown）, 2） if males could learn to associate an eye color cue with female receptivity, and 3） whether this association disappeared when the males were unable to use this visual cue in the dark. We found that naive males had no baseline preference for females of either eye color, but that males which were trained with sexually receptive females of a given eye color showed a preference for that color during a standard binary choice experiment. The learned cue was indeed likely to be truly visual, since the prefe- rence disappeared when the binary choice phase of the experiment was carried out in *** is, to our knowledge l） the first evidence that male D. melanogaster can use more arbitrary cues and 2） the first evidence that males use visual cues during mate choice learning. Our findings suggest that that D. melanogaster has untapped potential as a model system for mate choice learning.

Poultry keratin based decolorants for dyeing wastewater treatment

One of the challenges in wastewater treatment is the low efficiency in decoloring dyeing *** feather,as a waste material,has a great potential in decoloring the dyeing *** this study,a lab synthesized dyeing wastewater prepared with acid blue-A dye was treated with a chicken feather keratin-based composite decolorant KA(keratin agent)using batch decoloration techniques.A modified KA(MKA)was also developed to improve the decoloration *** decoloration performance of the two decolorants was then evaluated in terms of decoloring rate,at various decolorant dosages,pH,reaction temperature and *** optimal conditions,the decoloration rates of the KA and MKA in treating the dyeing wastewater were 91.8%and 94.3%,*** and TEM results indicated that the KA and MKA decolorants removed the dye stuff from the dyeing wastewater by physical adsorption as well as chemical reactions.

Background and Objective:Advances in teleophthalmology and artificial intelligence(AI)for diabetic retinal screening is of growing public health ***,only 30–40%of patients with diabetes adhere to recommended diabetes screening *** enhance early detection and reduce vision threatening complications,there has been a growing number of teleophthalmology programs and novel AI algorithms with the aim to improve eye care *** purpose of this review is to assess current literature on teleophthalmology and AI for use in diabetic retinopathy(DR)screening,and to discuss advances and barriers to these innovative ***:literature review involving teleophthalmology and AI for DR screening,with focus on the past *** Content and Findings:Teleophthalmology has demonstrated the ability to increase DR screening rates,enable earlier eye care access,and reduce healthcare *** AI-based DR screening programs appear accurate and effective,but detection of other ocular pathologies is still under development and not yet approved in the United ***,technological,financial,and legal barriers limit widespread adoption and long-term sustainability of teleophthalmology ***:The use of teleophthalmology and AI algorithms expands eye care access and helps prevent vision loss from DR and potentially other sight threatening *** in the process utilized for arriving at a particular diagnosis or decision to refer,often referred to as the“black box”,remains a multifaceted issue within the field of telemedicine for developing trust and improving patient-centered outcomes.

Controlled release of FK506 from micropatterned PlGA films:potential for application in peripheral nerve repair

After decades of research,peripheral nerve injury and repair still frequently results in paralysis,chronic pain and neuropathies leading to severe disability in *** clinically available nerve conduits only provide crude guidance of regenerating axons across nerve gap without additional ***506（Tacrolimus）,an FDA approved immunosuppressant,has been shown to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration but carries harsh side-effects when delivered *** objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a bioresorbable drug delivery system capable of local extended delivery of FK506 that also provides topological guidance cues to guide axon growth via *** was used to create micropatterned poly（lactide-co-glycolic acid）（PlGA） films embedded with ***-patterned,10/10 μm（ridge/groove width）,and 30/30 μm patterned films loaded with 0,1,and 3 μg/cm2 FK506 were manufactured and *** vitro FK506 rate of release testing indicated that the films are capable of an extended（at least 56 days）,controlled,and scalable release of *** extension bioactivity assay indicated that FK506 released from the films（concentration of samples tested ranged between 8.46–19.7 ng/m l） maintained its neural bioactivity and promoted neurite extension similar to control FK506 dosages（10 ng/m l FK506）.The multi-functional FK506 embedded,micropatterned poly（lactide-co-glycolic acid） films developed in this study have potential to be used in the construction of peripheral nerve repair devices.

Copolymer-1（Cop-1） is a peptide with immunomodulatory properties, approved by the Food and Drug Administration of United States in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Cop-1 has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects and induce neurogenesis in cerebral ischemia models. Nevertheless, the mechanism involved in the neurogenic action of this compound remains unknown. The choroid plexus（CP） is a network of cells that constitute the interphase between the immune and central nervous systems, with the ability to mediate neurogenesis through the release of cytokines and growth factors. Therefore, the CP could play a role in Cop-1-induced neurogenesis. In order to determine the participation of the CP in the induction of neurogenesis after Cop-1 immunization, we evaluated the gene expression of various growth factors（brain-derived neurotrophic factor, insulin-like growth factor 1, neurotrophin-3） and cytokines（tumor necrosis factor alpha, interferon-gamma, interleukin-4（Il-4）, Il-10 and Il-17）, in the CP at 14 days after ischemia. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the expression of these genes and neurogenesis. Our results showed that Cop-1 was capable of stimulating an upregulation in the expression of the genes encoding for brain-derived neurotrophic factor, insulin-like growth factor 1, neurotrophin-3 and Il-10 in the CP, which correlated with an increase in neurogenesis in the subventricular and subgranular zone. As well, we observed a downregulation of Il-17 gene expression. This study demonstrates the effect of Cop-1 on the expression of growth factors and Il-10 in the CP, in the same way, presents a possible mechanism involved in the neurogenic effect of Cop-1.
