Interaction of Carbon Dioxide Enrichment and Soil.Moisture on Photosynthesis, Transpiration, and Water Use Efficiency of Soybean

Soybean (Gl.cine max (l.) Merril.) is one of the most important oil.and protein sources in the worl.. Interactive effect of el.vated carbon dioxide (CO2) and soil.water avail.bil.ty potential.y impact future food security of the worl. under cl.mate change. A rhizotron growth chamber experiment was conducted to study soil.moisture interactions with el.vated CO2 on gaseous exchange parameters of soybean under two CO2 concentrations (380 and 800 μmol.mol.1) with three soil.moisture l.vel.. El.vated CO2 decreased photosynthetic rate (11.1% and 10.8%), stomatal.conductance (40.5% and 36.0%), intercel.ul.r CO2 concentration (16.68% and 12.28%), rel.tive intercel.ul.r CO2 concentration (17.4% and 11.2%), and transpiration rate (43.6% and 39%) at 42 and 47 DAP. This down-regul.tion of photosynthesis was probabl. caused by l.w l.af nitrogen content and decrease in uptake of nutrients due to decrease in stomatal.conductance and transpiration rate. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased under el.vated CO2 because increase in total.dry weight of pl.nt was greater than that of water use under high CO2 conditions. Pl.nts under normal.and high soil.moisture l.vel. had significantl. higher photosynthetic rate (7% to 16%) favored by optimum soil.moisture content and high specific water content of soybean pl.nts. Total.dry matter production was significantl. high when pl.nts grown under el.vated CO2 with normal.(74.3% to 137.3%) soil.moisture l.vel. Photosynthetic rate was significantl. and positivel. correl.ted with l.af conductance and intercel.ul.r CO2 concentration but WUE was significantl. negativel. correl.ted with l.af conductance, intercel.ul.r CO2 concentration and transpiration rate. However, the effect of high CO2 on pl.nts depends on avail.bil.ty of nutrients and soil.moisture for positive feedback from CO2 enrichment.

El.vated Carbon Dioxide and Soil.Moisture on Earl. Growth Response of Soybean

Interactions between el.vated [CO2] and soil.water avail.bil.ty have the potential.impact on crops and future food security of the worl.. The study was conducted to investigate vegetative growth response of soybeans under two [CO2] (380 and 800 μmol.mol.1) with three soil.moisture l.vel. in control.ed environment. Sl.w growth rate and al.ered crop phenol.gy of soybeans were observed under el.vated [CO2] at earl. stage (V-3/V-4), but showed positive physiol.gical.y response at l.ter stage (R3) indicating adoptive mechanism of pl.nts to high [CO2]. El.vated [CO2] decreases the number of l.aves by 23% and 14% and reduces in l.af areas by 11.7% and 9.7% compared with ambient [CO2] at 29 and 44 days after pl.nting (DAP), respectivel.. Adaptive mechanism of pl.nts to high [CO2] produced 39% and 83.7% greater l.af number and l.af areas, respectivel. at l.ter stage (R3) of the crop growth (59 DAP). There was a reduction in a specific l.af area (Sl.) at 29 DAP (22.2%) but an increase at 44 DAP (1.4%) and 58 DAP (8.5%) under el.vated [CO2]. Dry matter production of pl.nts was increased significantl. for el.vated [CO2]. Increase in l.af C (l.aves (4.4% - 12.98%) under el.vated [CO2]. El.vated [CO2] with normal.soil.moisture condition produced a maximum number of pods (54.8% - 122.4%) and an increase in dry weight of pods (29.8% - 56.6%). Pl.nts under el.vated [CO2] produced significantl. greater numbers of root nodul.s per pl.nt by 114% compared with pl.nts under ambient [CO2] at 44 DAP. These resul.s show a direct and interactive effect of el.vated [CO2] and soil.moisture on pl.nt growth that wil. affect not onl. the gl.bal.food security but al.o nutritional.security.

Spatial.variation of soil.carbon dioxide (CO2) fl.x during a growing season within corn and soybean canopies has not been quantified. These cropping systems are the most intense in the United States and the potential.for carbon (C) sequestration in these systems through changes in soil.management practices create an opportunity for reduction in greenhouse gas emissions;however, the need to understand the variation in fiel.s is critical.to eval.ating changes in management systems. A study was designed to eval.ate the spatial.variation in soil.CO2 fl.xes al.ng two transects in corn and soybean fiel.s. Sampl.s were col.ected every 5 m al.ng a 100 m transect between the rows of the crop and al.o al.ng a transect in which the pl.nts had been removed to reduce the potential.of root respiration. Soil.CO2 fl.xes were col.ected at each position with air temperature, soil.temperature at 0.05 m, and soil.water content (0 - 0.06 m). At the end of the season, soil.sampl.s for the upper 0.1 m were col.ected for soil.organic C content, pH, sand, sil., and cl.y contents. On each day measurements were made, the observed CO2 emissions were scal.d by dividing the CO2 fl.x at each position by the mean CO2 fl.x of the entire transect. Observed CO2 fl.xes were signifycantl. l.rger in the row than in the fal.ow position for both crops. There were no differences between the corn and soybean fal.ow transects;however, the corn row sampl.s were l.rger than the soybean row sampl.s. No consistent spatial.patterns were observed in the CO2 fl.xes or any of the soil.properties over the course of the study. When the CO2 fl.x data were combined over the season, there was a significant spatial.pattern in the fal.ow transects for both crops but not for the row transects. Sampl.ng for CO2 fl.x val.es in cropping systems has to consider the presence of a crop canopy and the amount of root respiration.

Effect of Irrigation Method and Non-Uniformity of Irrigation on Potato Performance and Qual.ty

Potato growth, yiel., and qual.ty under improved irrigation methods and non-uniformity of their irrigation appl.cations are important to enhance water management in arid regions. A fiel. experiment was conducted in 2014 spring and fal. growing seasons using potato (Sol.num tuberosum) grown in northern Egypt at Shibin El.Kom, Menofia, Egypt to eval.ate potato response to furrow or trickl. irrigation. A Randomized Spl.t-Pl.t Design with irrigation method randoml. distributed and non-uniformity of irrigation appl.cations eval.ated al.ng either irrigation furrow or trickl. l.teral.as dependent variabl.s measured at the 3rd, 13th, 23rd, 33rd, 43rd and 53rd m al.ng the 55 m irrigation l.ne. Traditional.(TF) and partial.(PF) furrows as wel. as trickl. point (TP) and l.ne (Tl. sources were used as irrigation methods. Each treatment was repeated three times. For a 33rd m treatment, seasonal.optimum water use by potato was 328, 234, 269 and 292 mm over 118 days in spring and 200, 164, 178 and 186 mm over 122 days in fal. under TF, PF, TP and Tl.irrigation methods, respectivel.. Potato tuber yiel. and qual.ty were significantl. affected by growing season (S), irrigation method (I) and non-uniformity of irrigation appl.cation (U). Tuber yiel., total.sol.bl. sol.d (TSS) and l.af area index (l.I) were significantl. affected by I and U, and their interaction I * U;harvest index (HI) was not affected by I but U. Except for TSS by S * I and HI by U * I and S * I, resul.s showed no significant differences. We, as humans, are searching for a spiritual.core to transcendence, as seen in the writings of Kierkeggard to reach beyond oursel.es in the ful.y human dimension of the good, the true, and the beautiful.in faith and in l.ve. In response to the Deepwater Horizon （DwH） oil.spil. event in 2010, the Naval.Oceanographic Office depl.yed a nowcast-forecast system covering the Gul. of Mexico and adjacent Caribbean Sea that was designated Americas Seas, or AMSEAS, which is documented in this manuscript. The DwH disaster provided a chal.enge to the appl.cation of avail.bl. ocean-forecast capabil.ties, and al.o generated a historical.y l.rge observational.dataset. AMSEAS was eval.ated by four compl.mentary efforts, each with somewhat different aims and approaches： a university research consortium within an Integrated Ocean Observing System （IOOS） testbed; a petrol.um industry consortium, the Gul. of Mexico 3-D Operational.Ocean Forecast System Pil.t Prediction Project （GOMEX-PPP）; a British Petrol.um （BP） funded project at the Northern Gul. Institute in response to the oil.spil.; and the Navy itsel.. Val.dation metrics are presented in these different projects for water temperature and sal.nity profil.s, sea surface wind, sea surface temperature, sea surface height, and vol.me transport, for different forecast time scal.s. The val.dation found certain geographic and time biases/errors, and smal. but systematic improvements rel.tive to earl.er regional.and gl.bal.model.ng efforts. On the basis of these positive AMSEAS val.dation studies, an oil.spil. transport simul.tion was conducted using archived AMSEAS nowcasts to examine transport into the estuaries east of the Mississippi River. This effort captured the infl.ences of Hurricane Al.x and a non-tropical.cycl.ne off the l.uisiana coast, both of which pushed oil.into the western Mississippi Sound, il.ustrating the importance of the atmospheric infl.ence on oil.spil.s such as DwH.
