The association between radiological spreading pattern and clinical outcomes in necrotizing external otitis

Objectives: Necrotizing external otitis(NEO) is a rare infectious disease of the skull base. The purpose of this study was to determine whether clinical outcomes of NEO can be correlated to different infectious spread ***: Retrospective chart review from 2010 to 2019 with NEO patients, who were divided into two cohorts: single spreading patterns(group A) or complex spreading patterns(group B) as diagnosed by *** symptoms, diagnostic and treatment delay, course of disease, complications, and duration of antibiotic exposure were retrospectively collected from patient ***: 41 NEO patients were included, of which 27 patients belonged to group A(66%). The diseaserelated mortality rate was 12.2% among the entire cohort, no differences were found between group A and B. Higher rates of ***(42.9% vs 14.8% P = 0.047) and N. IX palsies were found in group B compared to group A(28.6% vs 3.7%, P = 0.039). The median duration of antibiotic use was significantly different for a complex spreading pattern, clinical recovery and hospitalizations. Complications were associated with higher diagnostic delay and with a complex spread pattern. The median duration of follow-up was 12.0(IQR 6.0-19.5) ***: NEO is a severe disease, with significant mortality and morbidity(cranial nerve palsies). The radiological spread pattern may assist in predicting clinical outcome. Furthermore, complex spread patterns are associated with higher rates of clinical nerve palsies(N. VII and ***), complications, surgery rates and longer duration of antibiotic use. Diagnostic delay was associated with mortality, complications and facial palsies.

Lax-Oleinik-Type Formulas and Efficient Algorithms for Certain High-Dimensional Optimal Control Problems

Two of the main challenges in optimal control are solving problems with state-dependent running costs and developing efficient numerical solvers that are computationally tractable in high *** this paper,we provide analytical solutions to certain optimal control problems whose running cost depends on the state variable and with constraints on the *** also provide Lax-Oleinik-type representation formulas for the corresponding Hamilton-jacobi partial differential equations with state-dependent ***,we present an efficient,grid-free numerical solver based on our representation formulas,which is shown to scale linearly with the state dimension,and thus,to overcome the curse of *** existing optimization methods and the min-plus technique,we extend our numerical solvers to address more general classes of convex and nonconvex initial *** demonstrate the capabilities of our numerical solvers using implementations on a central processing unit(CPU)and a field-programmable gate array(FPGA).In several cases,our FPGA implementation obtains over a 10 times speedup compared to the CPU,which demonstrates the promising performance boosts FPGAs can *** numerical results show that our solvers have the potential to serve as a building block for solving broader classes of high-dimensional optimal control problems in real-time.

Oxidative Stress in Collegiate Cross Country Skiers in Mid- and Post-Seasons

Purpose: The oxidative stress (OS) hypothesis of overtraining syndrome argues that increased production of free radicals through exercise cause muscle fatigue and damage resulting in lower athletic performance. Several studies have investigated OS immediately before and after exercise bouts in a training macrocycle. Our study aimed to compare OS of endurance athletes between a competition macrocycle and the immediate post-season recovery macrocycle. In addition, we aimed to identify athletes who experienced an unexplainable drop in athletic performance during the competition season in order to compare their OS to those who experienced no drop in performance. Methods: Fifteen members of the University of Alaska Fairbanks cross country ski team volunteered for this study. Blood samples were taken in early February (“mid-season”) and late April (“post-season”). Participants completed questionnaires regarding physical activity and athletic performance at the time of the blood draws. Plasma was analyzed for 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), nitrotyrosine, nitric oxide (NOX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Significance was determined by Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: Participants displayed significantly higher (p Conclusion: Signs of oxidative stress and mitigation during the post-season recovery macrocycle were higher in athletes who reported experiencing a drop in athletic performance during the competition season macrocycle.

On the genetic distinctiveness of tailorbirds(Cisticolidae:Orthotomus)from the South-east Asian mainland with the description of a new subspecies

Background: The Cambodian Tailorbird(Orthotomus chaktomuk) was one of the most recent major ornithological discoveries in South-east Asia as it originated from lowland seasonally flooded scrub within the densely inhabited floodplain around the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers(Cambodia). The Cambodian Tailorbird is sister to the Dark-necked Tailorbird(O. atrogularis) with very limited genetics and biometric differentiation. Between 2004 and 2012, evidences of a new population of Ashy Tailorbird(O. ruficeps) in SE Cambodia/Vietnam accumulated but no museum specimens were ever reported. The Ashy Tailorbird currently consists of eight subspecies among which the closest geographical populations, O. r. cineraceus(SE Burma to Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung) and O. r. borneoensis(Borneo), are allopatric. Subspecific identification of the Cambodian Ashy Tailorbirds individuals was not possible because of the limited differences in plumage among ***: We inspected the Orthotomus ruficeps specimens housed at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle(Paris) and discovered five specimens of O. ruficeps collected by Louis Rodolphe Germain in ‘Cochinchina'(corresponding to southern Vietnam) during the nineteenth century. We sequenced one mitochondrial locus and gathered biometric data from these specimens and compared them with other Orthotomus ***: The Ashy Tailord population from SE Cambodia and Vietnam is distinct from the two geographically close subspecies O. r. borneoensis(1.7%) and O. r. cineraceus(1.3%). O. chaktomuk is nested within O. atrogularis in the mitochondrial gene tree. Understanding the sources and composition of the incremental excess of fine particles across multiple sampling locations in one air shed

Well-designed health studies and the development of effective regulatory policies need to rely on an understanding of the incremental differences in particulate matter concentrations and their sources. Although only a limited number of studies have been conducted to examine spatial differences in sources to particulate matter within an air shed, routine monitoring data can be used to better understand these differences. Measurements from the US EPA Chemical Speciation Network （CSN） collected between 2002-2008 were analyzed to demonstrate the utility of regulatory data across three sites located within 100 km of each other. Trends in concentrations, source contribution, and incremental excesses across three sites were investigated using the Positive Matrix Factorization model. Similar yearly trends in chemical composition were observed across all sites, however, excesses of organic matter and elemental carbon were observed in the urban center that originated from local emissions of mobile sources and biomass buming. Secondary sulfate and secondary nitrate constituted over half of the PM2.5 with no spatial differences observed across sites. For these components, the excess of emissions from industrial sources could be directly quantified. This study demonstrates that CSN data from multiple sites can be successfully used to derive consistent source profiles and source contributions for regional pollution, and that CSN data can be used to quantify incremental differences in source contributions of across these sites. The analysis strategy can be used in other regions of the world to take advantage of existing ambient particulate matter monitoring data to better the understanding of spatial differences in source contributions within a given air shed.

Growth,Structural and Microhardness Studies on New Semiorganic Single Crystals of Calcium Para Nitrophenolate Dihydrate

Good quality crystals of calcium p-nitrophenolate （NPCa） were grown from saturated solution by slow evaporation method. The crystal structure analysis and the molecular arrangement of these crystals were determined using X-ray diffraction （XRD）. From Single crystal XRD studies, NPCa is found to be crystallized in the mon- oclinic system with a space group P21/n. The functional groups of the material were confirmed qualitatively by F-FIR （Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy） spectral analysis. Optical absorption studies reveal the absorption region and microhardness studies were carried out to confirm the mechanical behaviour of the crystals.
