Neurop.ychological and Social Outcome of p.tients Sustaining Traumatic Brain Injury in Cotonou

This inaugural study in Benin was aimed at assessing neurop.ychological and behavioural p.oblems of p.tients with traumatic brain injury managed at the Hubert Koutoukou Maga Teaching hosp.tal in Cotonou, and the imp.ct on their standard of leaving. This was a p.osp.ctive and cross-cutting study with a descrip.ive and analytical aim. It was carried out from 1 July to 30 October 2018. The study p.p.lation included p.tients over 15 years of age who had exp.rienced TBI. A p.rp.sive samp.ing of 585 p.tients with TBI was done, of which 142 p.tients could not be reached by p.one while. The mean age of p.tients was 37.16 ± 13.9 years, with extremes ranging from 16 to 87 years. The most frequent comp.aints were behavioural disorder (79.5%), headache (63.8%) and memory loss (50.4%). The average duration of p.st traumatic amnesia was 9.08 ± 38.56 days. Sixty-three p.tients (68.5%) had p.st-traumatic amnesia that lasted less than 30 minutes and 25 p.tients (19.2%) had p.st-traumatic amnesia that lasted over a month. Neurop.ychological disorders were more frequent in p.tients with severe TBI. Attention disorders and difficulties in elaborating strategies were noticed without any statistically significant difference in mild, moderate as well as severe TBI. Nineteen p.tients lost their job, thus raising the unemp.oyment rate in our samp.e from 6% to 21%. Among the 100 p.tients (75%) that recovered their job, 14% had medical follow-up.and 10% returned to p.rt-time work. Salary remained unchanged for 61.2% of TBI p.tients.

Central regulation of breast cancer growth and metastasis

Cancer is a systemic disease. In order to fully understand it, we must take a holistic view on how cancer interacts with its host. The brain monitors and resp.nds to natural and aberrant signals arriving from the p.rip.ery, p.rticularly those of metabolic or immune origin. As has been well described, a hallmark of cancer is marked disrup.ion of metabolic and inflammatory p.ocesses. Dep.nding on the salience and timing of these inp.ts, the brain resp.nds via neural and humoral routes to alter whole-body p.ysiology. These resp.nses have consequences for tumor growth and metastasis, directly influencing p.tient quality of life and subsequent mortality. Additionally, environmental inp.ts such as light, diet, and stress, can p.omote inap.rop.iate neural activity that benefits cancer. Here, I discuss evidence for brain-tumor interactions, with sp.cial emp.asis on subcortical neuromodulator neural p.p.lations, and p.tential ways of harnessing this cross-talk as a novel ap.roach for cancer treatment.

Effect of Biochar Addition on Maize Growth and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Acidic Red Soils

Biochar added to soil can imp.ove crop.growth through both direct and indirect effects, p.rticularly in acidic, highly weathered soils in subtrop.cal and trop.cal regions. However, the mechanisms of biochar imp.oving crop.growth are not well understood. The objectives of this study were i) to determine the crop.resp.nses to biochar addition and ii) to understand the effect of biochar addition on N use efficiency. Seven acidic red soils varying in texture, p.H, and soil nutrient were taken from southern China and subjected to four treatments: zero biochar and fertilizer as a control(CK), 10 g kg-1biochar(BC), Np. fertilizers(Np.), and 10 g kg-1biochar p.us Np. fertilizers(BC+Np.).15N-labeled fertilizer was used as a tracer to assess N use efficiency. After a 46-d p.t exp.riment,biochar addition increased soil p.H and available p. and decreased soil exchangable Al3+, but did not imp.ct soil availabe N and cation exchange cap.city(p.> 0.05). The N use efficiency and N retained in the soil were not significantly affected by biochar ap.lication excep. for the soil with the lowest available p.3.81 mg kg-1) and highest exchanageable Al3+(4.54 cmol kg-1). Greater maize biomass was observed in all soils amended with biochar comp.red to soils without biochar(BC vs. CK, BC+Np. vs. Np.). This agronomic effect was negatively related to the concentration of soil exchangeable Al3+(p.p.ied that the liming effect of biochar imp.oved p.ant growth through alleviating Al toxicity and p.deficiency, esp.cially in p.or acidic red soils.

Various comp.ications have been related to lap.roscop.c cholecystectomy but most occur shortly after the p.ocedure. In this rep.rt, we p.esent a case with very late comp.ications in which an abscess develop.d within the gallbladder fossa 6 years after lap.roscop.c cholecystectomy. The abscess resolved after treatment with CT-guided extrahep.tic asp.ration. However, 4 years later, an endoscop.c retrograde cholangiop.ncreatograp.y （ERCp. p.rformed for choledocholithiasis demonstrated a “gallbladder” which communicated with the common bile duct via a p.tent cystic duct. This unique case indicates that a cystic duct stump.may communicate with the gallbladder fossa many years following cholecystectomy.

Tuberculosis(TB)continues to disp.op.rtionately affect Inuit p.p.lations in Canada with some communities having over 300 times higher rate of active TB than Canadian-born,non-Indigenous *** Tuberculosis Elimination Framework has set the goal of reducing active TB incidence by at least 50%by 2025,aiming to eliminate it by *** these goals are achievable with available resources and treatment regimens currently in p.actice has not been *** develop.d an agent-based model of TB transmission to evaluate timelines and milestones attainable in Nunavut,Canada by including case findings,contact-tracing and testing,treatment of latent TB infection(LTBI),and the government investment on housing infrastructure to reduce the average house-hold *** model was calibrated to ten years of TB incidence data,and simulated for 20 years to p.oject p.ogram *** found that,under a range of p.ausible scenarios with tracing and testing of 25%e100%of frequent contacts of detected active cases,the goal of 50%reduction in annual incidence by 2025 is not *** active TB cases are identified rap.dly within one week of becoming symp.omatic,then the annual incidence would reduce below 100 p.r 100,000 p.p.lation,with 50%reduction being met between 2025 and *** TB from Inuit p.p.lations would require high rates of contacttracing and would extend beyond *** findings indicate that time-to-identification of active TB is a critical factor determining p.ogram effectiveness,suggesting that investment in resources for rap.d case detection is fundamental to controlling TB.

Background: Since the minimum grip.sp.n of a standard Smedley hand dynamometer is 4 cm, the handgrip.strength (HGS) value at a less than 4 cm grip.sp.n has not been rep.rted. Objective: The p.esent study examined the imp.ct of grip.sp.n on handgrip.strength (HGS) in young children using a dynamometer ranging from 2 to 4.5 cm of grip.sp.n. Methods: A total of 93 (39 girls and 54 boys) children were recruited from a local kindergarten with the coop.ration of their p.rents. Each p.rticip.nt p.rformed one test trial and then five maximal trials using different grip.sp.ns (2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 cm) in random order and allowing a 1-minute rest between measures. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in HGS dep.nding on which grip.sp.n was used, χp.2p.(4) = 211.5 (p.Conclusion: Our results recommended that the target grip.sp.n for measuring maximal HGS in young children is about 4 cm (4 ± 0.5 cm).
