In specific, th. ability to design materials th.t can bend, twist, compress and stretch.repeatedly, wh.le still able to maintain its full capability as conductors or electrodes, h.s led to numerous efforts to develop flexible and stretch.ble (bio)devices th.t are both.tech.ologically ch.llenging and environmentally friendly (e.g. biodegradable). In th.s review, we h.gh.igh. several recent significant results th.t h.ve made impacts toward th. field of flexible and stretch.ble electronics, sensors and power sources.

Th. magnetic strength.and versatility of h.terostructures generated via a simple microemulsion cluster-formation tech.ique is demonstrated. Th.s approach.allows optimization of individual component magnetic nanoparticles prior to h.terostructuring, expediting th. discovery and optimization of h.brid magnetic materials. Th. efficacy of th.s meth.d is validated th.ough.a magnetic study of nanoparticle clusters combining antiferromagnetic CoO and superparamagnetic CoFe204 nanoparticles with.tunable particle ratio and size. An enh.ncement of coercivity compared with.pure CoFe204 nanoparticles indicates th.t close interparticle contacts are ach.eved. Upon annealing, an exch.nge bias field of 0.32 T was observed--over twice th.t ach.eved in any oth.r colloidally-synth.sized system. Additionally, th. unique microstructure is defined during cluster formation and th.s protects magnetic coercivity during th. annealing process. Overall, th.s work demonstrates a general approach.for quickly exploring magnetic parameter space, designing interparticle functionality, and working towards th. construction of h.gh.value bulk magnets with.low materials and processing cost.

Despite substantial efforts at early diagnosis, accurate staging and advanced treatments, esoph.geal cancer(EC) continues to be an ominous disease worldwide. Risk factors for esoph.geal carcinomas include obesity, gastroesoph.geal reflux disease, h.rd-alcoh.l use and tobacco smoking. Five-year survival rates h.ve improved from 5% to 20% since th. 1970 s, th. result of advances in diagnostic staging and treatment. As th. most sensitive test for locoregional staging of EC, endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) influences th. development of an optimal oncologic treatment plan for a significant minority of patients with.early cancers, wh.ch.appropriately balances th. risks and benefits of surgery, ch.moth.rapy and radiation. EUS is costly, and may not be available at all centers. Th.s, th. yield of EUS needs to be th.ugh.fully considered for each.patient. Localized intramucosal cancers occasionally require endoscopic resection(ER) for h.stologic staging or treatment; EUS evaluation may detect suspicious lymph.nodes prior to exposing th. patient to th. risks of ER. Alth.ugh.positron emission tomograph.(PET) h.s been increasingly utilized in staging EC, it may be unnecessary for clinical staging of early, localized EC and carries th. risk of false-positive metastasis(over staging). In EC patients with.evidence of advanced disease, EUS or PET may be used to define th. radioth.rapy field. Multimodality staging with.EUS, crosssectional imaging and h.stopath.logic analysis of ER, remains th. standard-of-care in th. evaluation of early esoph.geal cancers. h.rein, publish.d data regarding use of EUS for intramucosal, local, regional and metastatic esoph.geal cancers are reviewed. An algorith. to illustrate th. current use of EUS at Th. University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is presented.

Esoph.geal cancer(EC)generally consists of squamous cell carcinoma(wh.ch.arise from squamous epith.lium)and adenocarcinoma(wh.ch.arise from columnar epith.lium).Due to th. increased recognition of risk factors associated with.EC and th. development of screening programs,th.re h.s been an increase in th. diagnosis of early *** EC is amenable to curative th.rapy by endoscopy,wh.ch.can be performed by eith.r endoscopic resection or endoscopic *** resection consists of eith.r endoscopic mucosal resection(preferred in cases of adenocarcinoma)or endoscopic submucosal dissection(preferred in cases of squamous cell carcinoma).Endoscopic ablation can be performed by eith.r radiofrequency ablation,cryoth.rapy,argon plasma coagulation or ph.todynamic th.rapy,amongst *** can also assist in th. management of complications post-esoph.geal surgery,such.as anastomotic leaks and ***,th.re is a growing role for endoscopy to manage end-of-life palliative symptoms,especially *** growing use of esoph.geal stents,debulking th.rapy and dilation can assist in improving a patient’s quality of *** th.s review,we examine th. multiple roles of endoscopy in th. management of patients with.EC.
