Wind effects on the migration routes of trans-Saharan soaring raptors： geographical, seasonal, and interspecific variation

Wind is among the most important environmental factors shaping birds＇ migration patterns. Birds must deal with the displacement caused by crosswinds and their behavior can vary according to different factors such as flight mode, migratory season, experience, and distance to goal areas. Here we analyze the relationship between wind and migratory movements of three raptor species which migrate by soaring-gliding flight： Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus, booted eagle Aquila pennata, and short-toed snake eagle Circaetus gallicus. We analyzed daily migratory segments （i.e., the path joining consecutive roosting locations） using data recorded by GPS satellite telemetry. Daily movements of Egyptian vultures and booted eagles were significantly affected by tailwinds during both autumn and spring migrations. In contrast, daily movements of short-toed eagles were only significantly affected by tailwinds during autumn migration. The effect of crosswinds was signifi- cant in all cases. Interestingly, Egyptian vultures and booted eagles showed latitudinal differences in their behavior： both species compensated more frequently at the onset of autumn migration and, at the end of the season when reaching their wintering areas, the proportion of drift segments was higher. In contrast, there was a higher drift at the onset of spring migration and a higher compensation at the end. Our results highlight the effect of wind patterns on the migratory routes of soaring raptors, with different outcomes in relation to species, season, and latitude, ultimately shaping the loop migration patterns that current tracking techniques are showing to be widespread in many long distance migrants.

A Note on Tropical Triangles in the Plane

We define transversal tropical triangles （affine and projective） and characterize them via six inequalities to be satisfied by the coordinates of the vertices. We prove that the vertices of a transversal tropical triangle are tropically independent and they tropically span a classical hexagon whose sides have slopes ∞, 0, 1. Using this classical hexagon, we determine a parameter space for transversal tropical triangles. The coordinates of the vertices of a transversal tropical triangle determine a tropically regular matrix. Triangulations of the tropical plane are obtained.

The variability of juvenile dispersal in an opportunistic raptor

The juvenile dispersal of raptors is a crucial stage that stretches from parental independence to the establishment of the first breeding *** 2012 and 2020,44 juvenile red kites Milvus milvus from the Spanish breeding population were tagged using GPS telemetry to study their *** left the parental breeding area at the end of their first summer and performed wandering movements throughout the Iberian Peninsula,returning to the parental breeding area the following year,repeating the same pattern until they settled in their first breeding *** analyzed the mean distance from the nest,the maximum reached distances,and the traveled distances(daily and hourly)during the first 2 years of dispersal and compared *** the high individual variability,variables describing the dispersal movements of juveniles showed a decreasing trend during the second dispersal year:80% of individuals reached a shorter maximum distance in the second year,70% decreased their mean distance to the nest,65% decreased their hourly traveled distances,and 50% decreased their daily traveled *** the other hand,the red kites usually combined wandering movements with the establishment of temporary settlement areas(TSA).The average duration of settlement in the TSAs was 75±40 days(up to 182 days)and was located at 182±168 km from the *** those areas,juveniles used 781.0±1895.0 km^(2)(Kde 95%).Some of the TSAs were used by several individuals,which suggests that these areas might be good targets for conservation in future management plans.

Survival effects of antibiotic exposure during the larval and adult stages in the West Nile virus vector Culex pipiens

The ability of mosquitoes to transmit a pathogen is affected,among other factors,by their survival rate,which is partly modulated by their *** microbiota is acquired during the larval phase and modified during their development and adult feeding behavior,being highly dependent on environmental *** residues including antibiotics are widespread pollutants potentially being present in mosquito breeding waters likely affecting their ***,we used Culex pipiens mosquitoes to assess the impact of antibiotic exposure during the larval and adult stages on the survival rate of adult ***-collected larvae were randomly assigned to two treatments:larvae maintained in water supplemented with antibiotics and control *** adults were subsequently assigned to each of two treatments,fed with sugar solution with antibiotics and fed only with sugar solution(controls).larval exposure to antibiotics significantly increased the survival rate of adult females that received a control *** addition,the effect of adult exposure to antibiotics on the survival rate of both male and female mosquitoes depended on the number of days that larvae fed ad libitum in the laboratory before *** particular,shorter larval ad libitum feeding periods reduced the survival rate of antibiotic-treated adult mosquitoes compared with those that emerged after a longer larval feeding *** differences were not found in control adult *** results extend the current understanding of the impact of antibiotic exposure of mosquitoes on a key component of vectorial capacity,that is the vector survival rate.

Use of a lyophilized bovine pericardium graft to repair tunical defect in patients with Peyronie＇s disease： experience in a clinical setting

Many different materials are available for grafting during surgery for Peyronie＇s disease （PD）. To study the outcomes associated with the use of a lyophilized bovine pericardium graft （Peri-Guard） to repair tunical defects in patients with PD, descriptive study of 43 patients with disabling penile curvature was performed. Curvature was measured before and after the intervention using a standardized procedure. Surgical technique was plaque excision and grafting of the tunical defect carried out by a single surgeon. A lyophilized bovine pericardium patch was used for grafting. We measured the change in penile curvature and length, the ability to perform successful sexual intercourse without further pharmacological or surgical treatment, and the satisfaction with treatment. Follow-up data were available for a total of 41 patients. Median age was 50 years （IQR 48-52）; mean follow-up time was 14 ± 6 months. Complete penile straightening was achieved in 33 patients （80.5%） and five patients （12.2%） had curvature under 20. Three months after surgery and stretching therapy, mean （s.d.） flaccid penile length increased from 11.2 ± 2.8 cm to 12.1 ± 2.9 cm （P = 0.062）. Seventy-five percentage of patients reported being able to achieve successful intercourse without further treatment. Eighty-five percentage of patients reported to be satisfied with the treatment. There was no evidence of tissue rejection or infection, and only four patients suffered an adverse event. Plaque excision and grafting of the tunical defect with lyophilized bovine pericardium seems to be a safe and effective treatment for patients with PD.

A Proposal for Epistemological Errors detected in the Works of Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and descartes

Epistemological review uses neurosociology, clinical neurosociology, and the neuroquantic paradigm of some of the propositions made by Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and descartes. These propositions include： the law of universal gravitation based on Newton＇s theory of gravity, Darwin＇s theory of evolution, Einstein＇s special theory of relativity, and descartes＇ philosophical proposition cogito ergo sum. This last proposition was considered to be an essential element of Western philosophy, as it was perceived to be the foundation for all knowledge. In all of these cases, possible problems of interpretation or construction have been detected and alternatives are proposed. Newton＇s law was replaced by the general theory of relativity, but this also has some shortcomings. For Darwin, the hypothesis of eclosion has been proposed. For Einstein, the dimension ＂time＂ is eliminated and the concept of ＂space-motion＂ is proposed. In the case of descartes, the author proposes that the person and the body do not have life. It is the cells and neurons that are alive and it is in the neurons where information or thoughts are generated, stored, and processed, Therefore, it is the neurons that exist.

In this paper we prove the behaviour in weighted Lp spaces of the oscillation and variation of the Hilbert transform and the Riesz transform associated with the Hermite operator of dimension 1. We prove that this operator maps LP（R, w（x）dx） into itself when w is a weight in the Ap class for 1 〈 p 〈 ∞. For p = 1 we get weak type for the A1 class. Weighted estimated are also obtained in the extreme case p = ∞.

“Time flies over us,but leaves its shadow behind”(Nathaniel Hawthorne,1860,The Marble Faun).The shadow that separates the latest guidance on vascular liver disorders of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases(AASLD)from its former counterpart is 12 years long(1,2).Along the course,several guidelines from different societies have been published on this topic(3-7).As acknowledged in the preamble,the lack of high-quality evidence in the field led the AASLD to commission a guidance from an expert panel based on formal review and analysis of the *** thus differs from other guidelines that perform systematic reviews with explicit methods of searching,selection,and rating the quality of evidence and,if appropriate,meta-analysis on certain clinical questions(2).
