The Effects of Sex on Patient Reported Outcomes in Inflammatory Arthritis and Connective Tissue Diseases

Background: It was thought that women report higher pain than men. We studied if there was a sex difference for several patient reported outcomes (PROs) in rheumatic diseases. Materials and Methods: Health Assessment Questionnaire disability index (HAQ-DI) as well as 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and patient global assessment were compared cross-sectionally between the sexes for ankylosingspondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Data were collected using standardized forms administered during routine care. Results: The sample included 136 patients (97 males) with AS, 200 (83 males) with PsA, 232 (40 males) with RA, 199 (12 males) with SLE, and 113 (17 males) with SSc. There were no significant differences in AS. There were sex differences in PsA for HAQ (0.85 females, 0.57 males;p s, 36.8 males;p s, 31.6 males;p s, 36.0 males;p s, 33.1 males;p whereas, in SSc, men had a higher global assessment (52.9 males, 38.1 females;p Conclusions: A significant sex difference was observed in PsA with females reporting worse symptoms. In SSc, global assessments were worse in males possibly due to proportionately more diffuse cutaneous SSc. Sex differences for PROs are not consistent between rheumatic inflammatory diseases in prevalent patients.

Excitons,bound electron–hole pairs,in two-dimensional hybrid organic inorganic perovskites(2D HOIPs)are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons(E–Ps)when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical *** the case of 2D HOIPs,they can self-hybridize into E–Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the ***,the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E–Ps in 2D HOIPs,including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces,remain ***,we demonstrate that>0.5µm thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E–P *** E–Ps have high Q factors(>100)and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and *** varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements,we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy E–Ps to lower energy E–***,we also demonstrate that E–Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at *** findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E–Ps opening new opportunities towards their manipulation for polaritonic devices.

Ribonucleic acids （RNAs） possess great therapeutic potential and can be used to treat a variety of diseases. The unique biophysical properties of RNAs, such as high molecular weight, negative charge, hydrophilicity, low stability, and potential immunogenicity, require chemical modification and development of carriers to enable intracellular delivery of RNAs for clinical use. A variety of nanornaterials have been developed for the effective in vivo delivery of short/ small RNAs, messenger RNAs, and RNAs required for gene editing technologies including clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeat （CRISPR）/Cas. This review outlines the challenges of delivering RNA therapeutics, explores the chemical synthesis of RNA modifications and carriers, and describes the efforts to design nanomaterials that can be used for a variety of clinical indications.

Role of proteasome inhibition in sensitized transplant candidates

Obj.ctive To review this efficacy and safety of bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor, in the setting of the sensitized transplant candidate. Data sources The data used in this review were from articles published （PubMed） between 2000 to 2010. Additionally abstracts from medical meetings related to transplant were also used. Study selection Articles were selected if they were trial results or case studies for the use of bortezomib in the sensitized patient *** The early data using bortezomib as a part of desensitization regimens has shown success. Although one cycle （4 doses） of bortezomib seems to have affect on many patients, it also seems likely that to provide complete desensitization multiple cycles will be required. Regarding safety, bortezomib has been shown to have minimal side effects. The most common side effects reported are those of thrombocytopenia and anemia. These side effects are dose related and self limiting upon discontinuation of the *** Bortezomib with plasmapheresis is a promising new alternative to desensitization protocols that use either high dose intravenous immune globulin （IVIG） or low dose IVIG and plasmapheresis. The efficacy on antibody reduction looks to be batter that that of the IVIG based regimens without significant addition toxicity. The results of ongoing prospective trials are positive and their complete results are greatly anticipated.

Computational materials discovery has grown in utility over the past decade due to advances in computing power and crystal structure prediction algorithms(CSPA).However,the computational cost of the ab initio calculations required by CSPA limits its utility to small unit cells,reducing the compositional and structural space the algorithms can *** studies have bypassed unneeded ab initio calculations by utilizing machine learning to predict the stability of a ***,graph neural networks trained on large datasets of relaxed structures display high fidelity in predicting formation ***,the geometries of structures produced by CSPA deviate from the relaxed state,which leads to poor predictions,hindering the model’s ability to filter unstable *** remedy this behavior,we propose a simple,physically motivated,computationally efficient perturbation technique that augments training data,improving predictions on unrelaxed structures by 66%.Finally,we show how this error reduction can accelerate CSPA.
