Soil nutrient depletion as a result of continuous cultivation with insufficient external nutrient replenishment is a major challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A trial using the organic and mineral fertilizer was established in the cassava cropping system of the Pissa and Damara areas to address the declining soil fertility. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of cow manure and mineral fertilizer in combination or sole application on soil physico-chemical properties and macronutrients. The experimental trial adopted a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated four times. The treatments comprised of;T1 (Control), T2 (Peasant practice), T3 (sole NPK), and T4 (Cow manure + NPK). The data on soil physicochemical analysis was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance in SAS 9.4 and the mean was separated by Tukey’s HSD test at p l pH values ranged from 4.20 to 4.91;and 4.53 to 5.28 in Pissa and Damara respectively. According to the treatments, a low pH value is observed in T3 (4.13) in the Pissa. Combined use of cow manure and the mineral fertilizer resulted in higher Mg K and N in the Pissa region and higher soil pH in Damara. The use of sole NPK (T3) gave a higher soil carbon and CN ratio. In the Pissa region the CEC, Cu, Fe, and Zn were higher in the treatments with mineral fertilizer compared to the control. Conclusively, the use of mineral fertilizer and cow manure can be used with optimum rates to improve soil physico-chemical properties on a sustainable basis.

Although the natural history of recurrence/progression in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) of the pancreas has not been studied thoroughly, the three principal mechanisms have been identified: (a) presence of residual disease at the transection margin, (b) presence of intraductal/intraparenchymal metastases and (c) development of new primary lesions. Mechanisms (a) and (b) result in metastatic lesions that are genetically related to the primary, while new primary lesions (mechanism c) are genetically distinct. Interestingly, recurrence/progression in IPMN displays conceptual parallels with the well-established paradigm of disease recurrence in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Specifically, patients with HCC may also develop recurrent tumors due to microscopic residual disease/intrahepatic metastasis which are genetically similar to the primary while the development of genetically unrelated, de novo HCC after curative-intent resection is also common. The latter has been attributed to the presence of a widespread genetic abnormality ( "field defect" ) in the liver (ie, cirrhosis). Given the conceptual similarities between IPMN and HCC, a pancreatic "field defect" may also be hypothesized to exist. This review does not suggest that HCC and IPMN have identical pathogeneses, but rather that they have conceptual similarities in tumor recurrence/progression;thus, lessons learned from HCC could be applied to IPMN research and subsequent management. Conceptual similarities in tumor progression and recurrence may also be observed between IPMN and other malignancies. However, HCC was selected because it is well studied and can serve as a paradigm.

Genetic mutations in the gene encoding DOCK8 cause an autosomal recessive form of hyper immunoglobulin E syndrome （AR-HIES）, referred to as DOCK8 deficiency. DOCK8 deficiency in humans results in the onset of combined immunodeficiency disease （CID）, clinically associated with chronic infections with diverse microbial pathogens, and a predisposition to malignancy. It is now becoming clear that DOCK8 regulates the function of diverse immune cell sub-types, particularly lymphocytes, to drive both innate and adaptive immune responses. Early studies demonstrated that DOCK8 is required for lymphocyte survival, migration and immune synapse formation, which translates to poor pathogen control in the absence of DOCK8. However, more recent advances have pointed to a crucial role for DOCK8 in regulating the signal transduction events that control transcriptional activity, cytokine production and functional polarization of immune cells. Here, we summarize recent advances in our understanding of DOCK8 function, paying particular attention to an emerging role as a signaling intermediate to promote immune responses to diverse external stimuli.

In this paper, an economic model was constructed to determine the optimal wolf population and distribution across the Northern Rocky Mountains. Both ecological and economic concepts were incorporated in an implicitly spatial social welfare maximization problem. This interdisciplinary model relies on multiple data sources, including current wolf population and distribution information, opportunity cost to local landowners, and contingent valuation studies to determine willingness-to-pay for wolves. Economic models tend to externalize ecological concerns and ecological models often omit the complex human dimensions of conservation policy. Accordingly, this model can serve as a guide for integrating best practices from both fields. The model presented here is sufficiently general to apply to wolves in other ecosystems and to other highly interacting species such as beavers and bison. The Northern Rocky Mountain wolf was used as an example of how this economic model works, but this model can be applied far more broadly.

AIM: To study the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761)containing 22-27% flavonoids (ginkgo-flavone glycosides) and 5-7% terpenoids (ginkgolides and bilobalides) on cell proliferation and cytotoxicity in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. METHODS: Human HCC cell lines (HepG2 and Hep3B) were incubated with various concentrations (0-1 000 mg/l) of EGb 761 solution. After 24 h incubation, cell proliferation andcytotoxicity were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay and lactate dehydrogenase (lDH) release, respectively. After 48 h incubation, the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and p53 protein was measured by Western blotting. RESUlTS: The results showed that EGb 761 (50-1 000 mg/l)significantly suppressed cell proliferation and increased lDH release (Plls compared with the control group. The cell proliferation of HepG2 and Hep3B cells treated with EGb 761 (1 000 mg/l) was 45% and 39% of the control group (Ply. lDH release of HepG2 cells without and with EGb 761 (1 000 mg/l) treatment was 6.7% and 37.7%, respectively, and that of Hep3B cells without and with EGb 761 (1 000 rag/l) treatment was 7.2% and 40.3%, respectively. The expression of PCNA and p53 protein in HepG2 cells treated with EGb 761 (1 000 mg/l) was 85% and 174% of the control group, respectively. CONClUSION: Ginkgo bilobaextract significantly can suppress proliferation and increase cytotoxicity in HepG2 and Hep3B cells. Additionally, Ginkgo biloba extract can decrease PCNA and increase p53 expression in HepG2 cells.
